Alright ladies and gents, it's that time of the season again! Stanley Cup playoffs are looming so let's get ready for another bracket challenge. Last season the champ was Aggie98inFL and now it's time to crown a new champion.

Former Star Manny Malhotra just won a Calder Cup.


I wouldn't be surprised to see him interviewed by Jim Nill. Very highly thought of. Many thought Vancouver should have promoted him to their HC vacancy (he coaches for their AHL affiliate). I would be surprised if he were ultimately given the job, but I think he'll get an interview, and I bet he nails it.

Just would feel like a crazy downgrade from PDB to Gulutzan. I understand why they let PDB go, but this feels like a zag and waterfall drop off from a coaching level.

On one hand, I really like that they've taken time to do a thorough search. On the other hand, it's a bit concerning it doesn't feel like he had a targeted idea of what he's looking for and some decisiveness

Not that anyone here is bringing it up, but I'm seeing a lot of folks bring up his previous stint in Dallas. Not fair for a couple of reasons:

That team was in bankruptcy and spending near the cap floor. Gulutzan had very little experience at the time and was hired, in part, because he was a cheap option. It was always a no win situation.

He has a lot more experience now and is highly thought of. With that said, I'd prefer he not be the hire.

I think some of the "smoke" around this is because it was confirmed that he and Graham have interviewed, so someone ran with them being the two finalists. I don't think that's the case. Remember, Jim Nill has a track record of keeping things close to the vest.

The very real possibility exists that Graham could be named head coach and Gulutzan steps in to fill the vacancy left by Spott. Glen ran special teams for Edmonton and it would round out an experienced coaching staff for a first time NHL coach.

To me. Benn is a waste of a roster space hockey wise and $1M this year and $2M against the 2026-27 cap. I'm sure his leadership has value through the coaching change, especially since we will likely downgrade.

We aren't exactly overflowing with left wingers so we need Benn to fill a roster spot and he's still a lot better than anybody else you can get for $1-3MM.

Easy answer is coaching announcement, but Albert's typically only tweets when it's related to the business side. It's too early for an outdoor game announcement. Maybe jersey refresh or new 3rd jersey? They're doing away with the blackouts, and a few other teams have unveiled new threads. I'm going to go with that. Something to do with a new sweater.

My buddy said it's referencing the coaching search being over but no word on who they went with. He worked for the team for 14 years so his contacts are typically solid.

Most GMs would be smarter than to do that for a guy that was -22 in his last 20 games plus the playoffs, plus all the dumb penalty minutes. He averaged almost a minute per game in penalties in the regular season, and a minute and a half per game in the playoffs.

We should have let him be a waste of space on their roster if they wanted him.

These playoffs made it clear the game has passed benn by. Maybe he is able to be productive in regular season but once the intensity ratchets up for post season he was cooked.

Maybe they can figure out a way to rest him more during regular season or limit his minutes and save his legs for the playoffs. But I don't have a lot of confidence in that.

Almost feels like pavelski at the end. Love the guy and what he's done but you'd rather have a young fast guy that can at least be in the play and play defense. Versus Benn being behind the action and unable to keep up. Even if more talented.

Maybe someone can bonk him in the knee a week before the trade deadline so they can put him on LTIR and then hire some young waterbug type to take them through to playoffs.

Father time is undefeated. I can't image the grueling legwork and leg stamina that it takes to get through an NHL season. Benn's tank was gone before the playoffs and a big part of the seven-game losing streak to end the season. To me, PDB became the scapegoat instead of Benn and others who didn't or couldn't pull their weight taking ownership of their shortcomings. PDB brought Benn back to life as an attacking player three years ago with a refreshed style and program.

Benn MAY could be a good third or fourth line player in a Bowness "stay back and think D at all times" type system, but I don't think he could hang on a true "checking" line against 1s because of his current footspeed.

Couple of nuggets from Jim Nill:

-Head coaching search is ongoing. They're still conducting interviews.

-The roster's looking better than they thought, with the qualifier that they know some things that we don't...yet.
