Rumor is Faksa is coming back at 3y x 2M

I really don't like any of the moves Nil has made this offseason. IMO we needed a big shake up and all we're doing is re-signing retreads: Duchene, Benn, Gulutzan, and now Faksa.

My guess is that the actual centers will be Hintz, Wyatt, Faksa and Duchene, with Seguin, Bourque, Steele and Blackwell playing wing. Forwards are pretty adept at playing multiple spots these days. Additionally, I don't think Nill is done making moves. In the NHL you can go 10% over the cap in the offseason, meaning I think Nill is just trying to load up where he can now and he can continue to tweak later.

I wasn't in love with the hire, but I also didn't hate it. I've been of the mindset of "let's wait and see". But the more I hear and read, I'm being sold on this. A lot of people that know a lot more than I do seem to really like this hire.

Hockey loves retreads, but in this case, he was still pretty young when he got his chances. And he wasn't bad. Counting on almost 10 more years of learning and development making him a better coach than he was then, and I think there is a very good chance of that. I do think it had to be a huge benefit to have had those tastes as a HC, then have that context to build on and determine what you may do differently as you continue to learn as an assistant on good staffs

He could've/should've gotten more, but considering that he probably wasn't going to be able to get an 8 year deal because of the new CBA if he waited longer he opted for taking the 8 year deal.

I think I'm now in this boat. Heard a couple of interviews and I like what he's been preaching. I will give him (another) shot.

GG sucked as the coach of a good Calgary roster from 2016-2018. People are making believe that he hasn't been a head coach since the Stars. He has and, like Dallas, his team was worse in year 2 than year 1. He is 0-4 in playoff games. He has finished 4th or 5th in his DIVISION each time as a head coach. He simply isn't NHL head coaching material. And, we replaced a coach that had us in the conference finals every year with this dud.

But, make believe that he will come anywhere near a Stanley Cup as a head coach with that poor of a record if it makes the crap end to this season feel better with wishful thinking. You can have my tickets, as I'm likely giving mine up after this self-inflicted downward spiral. I've watched this team half-ass a ton before DeBoer came, and we will see more of the same under this coaching downgrade that was essentially forced on us by the players.

GG's two crappy stints are why nobody else has given him a shot since, and why it is such a weak hire. Like bringing back Jamie Benn, this is all smoke and mirrors to cover up a culture of mediocrity in the locker room that still exists since Jim Montgomery pointed it out three coaches ago. Benn is a big part of that culture of mediocrity and needs to go both as a captain and a player who doesn't deserve a roster spot over an up and comer. Give the C to a winner and a grinder like Miro.

He was on DLLS and said the trade was very hard on him and he didn't want it to happen again. I bet there's a very player friendly no trade clause in his contract.

I think Gully could be the energy needed for the team to actually want tun through brick walls. I also liked what I heard from him on DLLS. I am not sure any team can beat Florida but I am here to see them try.

I tend to agree. I like what he's said so far and he seems very aware of the Stars issues and that he doesn't need to reinvent the team. He just needs to get the last 5% out of them, as evidenced by bringing Faksa back. I'm still a little uneasy about it all, but we'll see.

He's played one season and had 38 points. 14 goals and 24 assists. It's not like he's a proven 20 goals scorer in this league.

$6 million a year for 8 years is lot for guy who is just breaking in and not exactly lighting it up.

I finally got a chance to listen to the DLLS interview with Gully and have a few takeaways:

1) He continues to go on and on about how this team doesn't need major changes; they just need everyone to get a little more physical so when it comes time for the playoffs, it'll be second nature to them

2) He also stated that along with just introducing more physical play on night-to-night basis, he would like to forecheck a few different ways as well (I took this as he wants a few guys playing in spots they may not be use to and getting the puck to different spots on the forecheck)

3) Perhaps my biggest takeaway from his conversation was that they are going to make a real effort to get more out of some of the younger guys, and a concerted effort to get more out of the d-group

I thought his comments about #3 were really interesting and something I like to hear. I got the feeling that he believes some of the younger guys have more to give; those being imo Bourque, Bichsel, Back and maybe even Steel and Wyatt. Obviously when it comes to Bourque, Bichsel and Back simply getting them to level up from being inexperienced NHL players to good everyday players (or more), but even for Steel and Wyatt. I think he really believes Steel can be a significant player who can play up the lineup more than he did for PDB, and in Wyatt's case taking him to superstardom and being worthy of his contract and more, which I think means much more physical and responsible in an all-around game.

On getting more out of the d-group, I also go the sense that he believes every single one of them can add more offensively to the team. Less side-to-side and more shoot the puck.

I don't think I'll be sold on this hire until I see us rattle off a good run of games and re-establish ourself at the top of the division, but I really do like what he is saying and I think he recognizes everything we have talked about this team needing to do.

Word on the street is that the Dallas front office wants to re-sign Robo to a long-term deal before the season starts, preferably at max $10MM/year. If they can't get a deal done before the season starts I'd assume he's going to get traded for boat load.

With Suter's dead money coming off the books next year, the current contracts of Robo and Harley, and the cap going up, the Stars will have around $22M. Robo and Harley can both be had, but that $10M is a pretty hard line. You have to figure that combined it'll be in the $18-$20M range for both guys, and you need a little left for smaller moves/extensions.

The problem is that it basically locks you into this current roster at least one more year (when Seguin comes off the books and the cap goes up again). Then, you can make some pretty aggressive moves.

So you have to decide: Do we play out this two year window with what we have (assuming Dumba is getting dumped and you make make one more roster addition) and then shake things up in two years, or do you shake things up now? That's why there's been all this noise around Robertson. To really change the team, you need his money. But change doesn't necessarily mean better. You're not going to replace his production AND make a significant upgrade at defense with a trade. And as it stands, this roster is projected to be nearly on par with last year's (101 projected points vs. 104).

Jim Nill has to decide if this team can get there with Robo or if they have to make another bold move. It sounds like they're willing to stick with the Robo plan, if the money is right. Robertson would be wise to take a max contract length deal now, but who knows what he and his agent are thinking. Guess we'll know soon enough.

I like Robo personally, even though I do think his skating ability and lack of aggression works against him at times and are legit negatives, but here's a fun question to the board; what is the defenseman or level of defenseman that you would trade Robo for? I ask this specific question because I just don't see them trading him unproven young talent or picks.
