forgive me if some of this discussion has already taken place in another thread. I'm new to texags, and here is a little rant of mine:

Since when did we start chanting things like: "AGGIES <clap><clap> AGGIES<clap><clap>" when we are waiting for our ladies to serve in volleyball games. Once again, wrong sport. I'm all for yelling that at basketball games, and what not. But last I checked we have lots of different yells that we use at particular sports. You could call them "traditions", though a lot of people are testy when in comes to calling something a tradtion thats only been around for five or less years. What I'm saying is, why do they have to go and change our neo-traditions every freaking year. We've set the standard now lets stick with it. Now all those freshman that have been attending recent matches are going to think those are the traditions. Next thing you know we are going to be yelling lame things like "Go team go!" Thats definately not Old Army. I guess maybe it's the same thing as when the yell leaders introduced the "Sky Rocket" yell to the football crowd. I knew few seniors that year that appreciated the revival of that yell. "Sky Rocket" works great in soccer because it was reintroduced the same a year we created most of the soccer neo-traditions. So we need to get these yell leaders onto the right page.

Uh...what's so bad about doing this at volleyball games? Personally I believe volleyball is a place where it makes sense to do a lot of the same things we do at basketball.

I've never particularly liked the AGGIES <clap><clap> in any venue, but I don't mind them trying to change things up. If we don't try to tweak things here and there, there's no way for our home court advantage to continue improve.

man haun 06...for being new to texags you sure do like to rant about a lot of stuff. A little variety never killed anybody.

We're not changing them, we're just adding to the atmosphere. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. The past three years I've been here, I've seen the enthusiasm for all the "other sports" grow among the students tremendously. So I'm going to assume, that these people must be doing something right.

Most of our traditions are about football anyway. It's not like anyone on campus could tell you about the storied traditions associated with soccer or volleyball. I'm not even sure there are any. Let's just build a winning atmosphere and leave it at that.

I got one rant, next time you elect yell leaders, make sure they've been to atleast one soccer game before. The poor kid on the North end friday didnt have a clue as to what he was supposed to be doing. The fact that the whole section was fish didnt help because they dont know whats supposed to go on anyway.

It's still August guys, give em a break. Everyone (new yell leaders and fish) will catch on eventually.

As far as the "Aggies (clap clap)" when the girls serve, I must agree with Haun06 (though not quite as adimantly). I like just clapping when the Ags serve and yelling your head off when the opponent serves.

oh we still yell our heads off :-) I'm kinda for the aggie clap clap thing cuz it's less distracting to the girls. There's nothing more distracting than when the yell leaders have us all clapping and we speed up and then they start us all over again slow right before the girl goes to serve. But that will get better with time. And we're still doing all the clapping things too, the yell leaders just added the aggies clap clap as a third possible thing to pump up the girls.

The build up clap is an awesome noise maker. Just imagine yourself in the player's shoes..... standing on the court, tons of fans clapping in unison, slowly building into a roar. What a massive rush of adrenaline! Or, they can hear the dull repetitive sound "aggies <clap><clap>". Personally, I'd wan't to feel the rush. And as for distracting the players when we restart the clap mid serve, they are so well practiced it's pretty much instinct.

Nothing wrong with a little variety...now if we could just get the one yell leader to stop with the Uncover Nazi routine...

This has never made sense to me and seems exactly backwards. If you've ever played competitive indoor volleyball, you know the most important part of the game is passing, specifically serve-receive. If your primary passer(s) can't feed the ball to your setter, the opposing blockers will have an easy time camping out on your OH and shutting her down completely.... which is what we did to the otherwise ridiculously good Mira Topic at Rollie last year.

Serving is all technique. If you have an ounce of innate athletic ability, it's simply a matter of putting in your reps on the practice court to perfect your toss, approach, jump, swing (assuming you're jumpserving). Good training is rarely derailed by something as incidental as crowd noise.

Passing, however, is only half technique. The other half is mental focus, because the server has 100% control over where to put the ball and your receivers have about 0.9 seconds to react and make their move.

Therefore, an overwhelming roar from the crowd is more effective when YOU are serving, because it makes it more difficult for the opposing team's passers to communicate whether the ball is in or out, and if it's in, who is going to make the pass.

If it's true that "they are so well practiced," then why holler at all? I promise you the other teams practice just as much as we do.

Welcome to the boards wannaggie. I have no argument to what you said...I'm just happy that someone actually sounds like they know what they're talking about.

We yell because it makes it a better sporting atmosphere, and it pumps up the teams. I understand that it affects both teams in similar ways. That is why I prefer louder and more adrenaline inducing techniques. Not ones like "aggies" clap clap. Thats just my opinion. It seems you might agree with me.

Totally agree in re: "AGG-IES <clap> <clap> AGG-IES <clap> <clap> AGG-IES <clap> <clap>...."

It's not even an issue of increasing or decreasing Home Court Advantage. That yell is just lame.

tell Patrick, he'll listen if enough people say something. But that would mean actually getting off your ass and doing something when you could sit on this board and ***** all day right.

Yeah, Patrick is willing to listen to fans' opinions. Icecream, myself, and I found that out last year during basketball season.

Just out of curiosity, where has Keaton been? I didn't see him at either of the volleyball games.
