COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane University volleyball hit the court for practice on Tuesday for the first time since Hurricane Katrina rocked the Gulf Coast, and the women's soccer will retake the practice field on Wednesday as members of the Green Wave Athletics family continue to get back into an everyday routine on the campus of Texas A&M University.
In addition, the Tulane Athletic Department announced that the Green Wave volleyball squad will return to intercollegiate activity on Friday, Sept. 16, when they play host to Arizona State, Notre Dame and arch-rival LSU in the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
"We are excited to be back on the court practicing and working together again," head volleyball coach Liz Kritza said. "With everyone enrolled and attending classes, getting into a practice routine is the next step to getting back to our normal routine. The next logical step is to return to competition, and we're going to do that by week's end.
"We are in a new town, in a new school and working with new people, but the people here at Texas A&M have been great. None of this would have been possible without the cooperation of the A&M staff, and I'd especially like to thank (head volleyball coach) Laurie and (associate head coach) John Corbelli, and (assistant coach) Robyn Romansky."
The NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic will begin on Friday at noon with LSU battling Arizona State, followed by a scheduled 2 p.m. match between the Green Wave and Notre Dame. The tournament will resume on Sunday at 11 a.m. when Notre Dame and LSU square off before Tulane takes on Arizona State at 1 p.m. The Green Wave volleyball team will practice daily from 8-11 a.m. Tuesday through Friday in White Coliseum.
The soccer team, meanwhile, will take the field on Wednesday at the Aggie Soccer Complex and daily practices are slated to go from 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.
"Our players are excited and anxious to get back on the playing field," head soccer coach Betsy Anderson said. "We've been the one sport that's been fortunate enough to have been competing (since the hurricane) and we looking forward to our games here in College Station. Texas A&M has truly done everything to make the facilities feel like a place we can call home."
Both the volleyball and women's soccer teams are expected to play the full schedule of Conference USA opponents in 2005 with Kritza's club opening league play on Friday, Sept. 23, at East Carolina while Anderson's squad begins C-USA action on Friday, Sept. 30, at Memphis.
Tickets to this weekend's NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic are available through the Texas A&M Ticket Office on a walk-up basis, and volleyball fans can also call ahead to 888-99-AGGIE or 979-845-2311. Admission is $5 a head and all proceeds will go toward helping rebuild Tulane University and its Athletic Department.
