DALLAS- Sophomore Melissa Garey was named Co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday, sharing the honor with Oklahoma’s Savannah Scott. This was Garey’s third career Big 12 accolade and second of the season.
Top Drawer Soccer, who publishes original articles on competitive youth soccer, soccer player development and college soccer in the USA, named Garey to their National Team of the Week.
“Melissa continues to work hard at creating and finishing her chances,” commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. “I’m thrilled to see her receive this special recognition for all the hard work she puts in.”
Both honors come after Garey helped lead the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies to two Big 12 Conference victories last weekend. The three goals against Kansas on Sunday gave Garey the lead in most goals scored in a conference game this season. She also leads the conference in most points tallied in a single game with six, also earned against KU.
However, Garey’s intense play was not only limited to Sunday’s game, Friday night she recorded an assist as she sent a pass to Ashlee Pistorius for A&M’s first goal against Mizzou.
The 5’8 forward from Gonzalez, La. also leads the conference in goals and goals per game with nine scored in nine games. Garey is second in the conference in total points with 20; she is also tied for second in the conference with three game-winning goals.
