I honestly don't understand why anyone gives a damn what the name is. I'm just glad that I now have a team to root for. They could be called the Houston Man-ginas for all I care.

Kristen. I think I made it relatively easy on her when I said "Just stick me with the supporter's section whenever we sort out wherever that is" so the whole call took 2 minutes. Very nice.

Absolutely. I'll even send you $5.

I think it's a shame they have to change the team name, but I think 1836 wasn't the best choice to begin with. Maybe the Houston Wildcatters or something.

As long as you don't go with Blues, using that baby blue color.

Be fair, tool, I talk about more than Chelsea. Maybe not much more ...

I was really excited about MLS having a Houston team, but the 1836 thing really is turning into a black eye. Whether the outrage in the Hispanic community is warranted or not, it would seem that maybe a couple of phone calls or a little market research might have saved a lot of headaches. Personally, I thought it wasn't a very good name, but it had started to grow on me.

Well, according to the team, they met with prominent leaders and politicians in the Hispanic community and none of them said they shouldn't use the name. In fact, I think several of the politicians who have recently said the team should change it's name were at the 1836 unveiling.

Remember the Alamo? How about the Houston Thin Skins? No, that might offend the people that protested in the first place. How about "Houston 1837" because that was the year Houston incorporated? Houston Fuel? Houston Petros? Houston Football Club (going for international flare)? What about Houston 1845, the year Houston joined the US? What about Houston 1870, the year Houston joined the US? Houston Tejans? Houston Energy? Port-of-Houstons? Houston Explorers? Houston Voyagers? Houston Odyssey? George W. Houstonians? Houston We Have A Problems? Houston Uno Problemo? That's all the names I can think of this late.

Either of those would be better than any of the variations of Lonestars.

Stupid move on the 1836 part.

Where did this supposed hue and cry come from about the name? Did any of our Hispanic friends living in Denver Harbor march up and down I-10 with flags waving? Or was this name change protest just a publicity stunt by a specific Houston city council person of the female side of our species who whined and got HER name in the paper?

What a joke this is; the Hispanic community will support Mexican League and Mexico based soccer teams, they will not support anything that is based here in Houston. The support for this soccer team will come from the parents and the kids who live in Klein, Kingwood, The Woodlands, Katy, Sugarland etc, not from the innercity Hispanic group. If soccer was so strong in the inner city, then why don't we see more club and high school championship teams that have their roots and origins in the inner city? The traditional state high school powers in South Texas are in Klein, Katy, Kingwood, The Woodlands, as are the traditional club teams like the The Heat, The Classics/Texans, The Dynamos, etc. etc. This is where the backing for the 1836 will come from.

Above is the article about the name when it came out in January, here's a quote:

quote:
Houston City Councilmember Adrian Garcia, who was on hand for the unveiling, said the name and logo were symbolic of the city the team will represent.

"Really, Houston's classic and classy. They worked hard to make the logo reflective of the whole city," Garcia said. "Houston 1836 will always hit the field ready to fight and to win."

Garcia said he expected big things from from this group of players and coaches, many of whom won two MLS Cup championships in San Jose.

"They're champions because the city of Houston is a champion," he said. "Houston 1836 has already proven that Houston is soccer and soccer is Houston."

He sounds very angry about the name.

KPRC in Houston interviewed a Hispanic Houston City Councilperson who is a women and she was leading the charge against the name 1836. I forget the name, and frankly I don't care, as I don't live in the city of Houston anyway; I live in Klein.

The MLS and the club ownership have caved, (if they actually do change the name) to minority interests, and that sucks my friend, tremendously.

Guys, relax.

They aren't changing the name because local Latinos were offended. The majority of local Latinos are not offended by the name. They're changing the name because it made sponsors nervous. Its a business decision, pure and simple.

I liked the name. I wish they had kept it. But as a soccer fan, I'm going to support the team regardless of the name.

And frankly, who is being more thin-skined here? The people who are offended by a reference to a war involving their own people 170 years ago? Or the people who choose to be offended by a soccer team changing a name that it had for two weeks? Honestly, if you're offended by the name change, you are looking for things to get upset about.

And so I guess we better not call any franchises the 1945ers or the Germans might be offended.

Rumor has it that the MLS will put a franchise in Honolulu, but they are to scared to pick a name...

how do you know that most latinos are offended...and why did you create a texags account just to say that...
Bob Sugar

Read my post again. I said that most Latinos ARE NOT offended. Most of the complaints I've heard come from the activist and academic types, who are not representative of the Latino community as a whole. But, even that was enough to scare the sponsors, which, in turn, was enough to scare MLS.

So this is all about $$$. Why pick a brand name that could potentially turn away a portion of a target demographic?

As to my reasons for registering? What the hell is it to you? Lets just say I'm a longtime lurker who has never felt the need to post before. But on this, I thought people were getting bent out of shape over a very trivial issue. The important thing is that Houston's getting a soccer team.

Sometimes the level of paranoia on texags is disturbing.

I actually meant to say how do you know latinos arent offended...Ive met a couple of lations who thought the name was a slap in the face to the latin community...

I haven't conducted a survey, that's just my take based on talking to people about it, reading the Chron, listening to local radio, and reading the threads about it on Big Soccer. The most common sentiment I've heard from Latinos seems to me, "It doesn't bother me, but I can see where some people might be offended." I guess it depends on who you talk to. I also read somewhere that MLS's market research on the name revealed a negative response of less than 10%.

That being said, I can totally understand that Mexicans or Mexican-Americans who strongly identify with Mexico might perceive the name as a slap in the face. I get that, and that's why the name change doesn't bother me.

In other news, they're going to rename the entire City of Houston, since it's terribly offensive that it's named after the guy who defeated the Mexican Army.

Stupid p.c. crap.
