Thanks for the offer.

Why are the British fans such Hooligans? The other island country fans are not that way.

I think its really funny actually. They come from a society that promotes this stuff. When I was in England (Great Yarmouth) visiting, the Daily Sun (I believe that's the name of their rag) printed the Statistics of the most notorious Hooligans!

They had stats for Arrests, Fights, Broken Appendeges, Toss-Outs, etc. It was HILARIOUS. They even had a Top-10 Best Hooligan Towns...

I'm getting into soccer for the first time.

Can you guys explain the strengths/weaknesses of the squads? For example, is the U.S. a fast offensive minded team, or are they stronger on defense? How's the goalkeeper?

What about Czech Republic? Costa Rica? etc?

A big question I know, but it would increase my ability to determine whether or not the teams are playing "their" game or being forced into the other teams hand.

I haven't kept up with current teams as much as in the past, but here are some sweeping generalizations from a Historical Context:

European Teams tend to play a more controlled and dominating passing game. They let the plays build up and try to corral the ball into the opposing teams end of the field. They typicall run a 3-5-2. Northern Europe focuses on larger players all around that play rough and physical and will beat you in the air and with their teamwork. Southern Europe tends to dominate with the same passing through finesse and speed. When you think Northern Europe, think Physical Dominance. When you think Southern Europe think Finesse.

South America tends to play what I (lightly) call Bit<#-Soccer. They tend to have very small and quick players who cannot dominate through the air, but will beat you with fantastic skill, one-on-one play, and quick-strike opportunism. The reason for the 'Bit<#' moniker is due to their smaller size and the fact that they tend to flop and go for the "Academy Award" during the game. FIFA has cracked down on this recently by offering yellow cards for obvious non-penalties and subsequent "flopping". All that aside, South-American teams are quick and nimble and rely on their midfielders, stamina, and opportunism to win. They are a bit show-boating and tend to rely on a handful of players per team (the stars) to dominate. When you think of South America think Hit-and-Fade.

North-America - Hrmm... we tend to pretty much balance between the two, I think. We don't unnecessarily flop to gain an advantage (for the most part, and if we do I get mad at the TV). We tend to play a controlled style with Air Dominance and Power Forwards, but we have not mastered it like the Northern Europeans. We also play the posession game with a flair for opportunism also. (This is based on the two previous World Cups, with Bruce Arena still as the lead man, I don't expect things to change much).

African?

Asians - Tend to play more like the South Americans due to their small stature, but aren't ones for Theatrics. They are calculating and skillful, but not physically dominant like the Europeans.

South Korea played what was known as Duracell soccer in the 2002 World Cup. They just kept going and going. I know the phrase was used for another battery brand, but the name Duracell stuck. Just wore you down.

However, South Korea looks a little different this time around and have abandoned, or can no longer play, the same style.

There really is no unique style of African soccer. Most of their best players play in Europe and, with the exception of Angola, have a European coach. The African sides do play with quite a bit of flair and they are on the cusp of really breaking through.

Togo was an interesting story. They had Stephen Keshi, the former Super Eagle (Nigeria) captain, as their coach and qualified for the World Cup. Then they turned on each other, sucked in the African Cup of Nations, fired the coach, and have been left to pick up the pieces.

And Angola - Portugal should be interesting pitting colony against colonial master.

Côte d’Ivoire is supposed to be the best team out of Africa at this tournament, but are in a tough group.

I did not keep up with European qualifying, so what happened with Ireland this time around? I enjoyed their fans/team last WC. The game against Spain in '02 was a heartbreaker.

this is ridiculous. keller is decent at best. This will change after Italy puts up 4 and Czech puts up 3 on us. I really dont think he is that great. I hope that he proves me wrong.

I would think the US would be more of a possession type team. we arent really focused on offense or defense, but rather try to break down teams based on possession. Most of our goals come from mismarks on crosses from our outside midfielders. Our forwards don't really have the ball-skills to take on the best defenders one on one, so we depend heavily on good games by the outside midfielders (beasley, convey, etc)

Granted it was a long time ago, but Keller was singlehandedly responsible for the lone victory of Brazil in 97 I believe.

37 saves in one game and Romario to this day calls it the best performance he has ever seen by a goalie.

Hakeem, I think Ireland were in the same qualifying group as France and Switzerland, which finished first and second, as well as Israel, who went unbeaten but failed to qualify. It was, to the say the least, an odd group. Israel's record should say it all.

On the bandwagon since birth. Raised in the bleachers of Kyle, Olsen, and G. Rollie White

It's become trendy to bash Keller lately. But it's silly.

He's competing for 4th World Cup team, should be 5th except for petty coaching politics. He's played great in several Gold Cups. He was #1 or #2 keeper in English Premier League for years.

I'm not ready to proclaim him the greatest of alltime, but he's best American goalie ever. Gimme his skill and experience in a 4 week tournament anyday.

i think italy stands a decent chance to win it all this year. Probably not france IMO. I also like argentina to win it. Obviously Brazil is always in the runnings. No team with an avg age of 30 or higher has ever won the cup, which if you go by statistics that knocks out france and brazil. Just an interesting statistic...

Italy and France have a slim chance. Both are lacking this year.

Look for the South American teams to have a tough time in Europe. They tend to lose their dominance playing in Europe.

Soccer is boring only to those who lack the mental capacity to notice the intricacy of the game. People who cannot think on their feet (pun intended). Soccer is a game always in motion, there are no starts and stops, no time-outs, no huddles, no stoppages...

How do they keep track of extended time?

I can watch a match, the 90th minute passes, and then play continues, but usually for an indeterminate length.

Doesn't that bother the players?

I am probably looking at it from a basketball perspective, in that the amount of remaining time greatly influences the type of play to be used at the end of the game.

Do the soccer teams ever pull their goal keepers in an attempt to add a scorer?

usually only on free kicks or corner kicks at the very end of injury time. Really dangerous play but works sometimes (ie Brad Friedel a couple years ago for Blackburn). Its hard to justify leaving the goal open though, there isn't much of a difference between 10 and 11 guys going for a service, only 1 can get to it.

Reference extra time--I've seen referees wear two watches, one that keeps running, and one that he stops for things like injuries, cards, and penalties.

Like a poster said previously, it can be rather arbitrary how much (or how little) time is added.
SpreadsheetAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Its usually only added for stoppages... (serious injuries) can be 3-4 minutes...

It is usually posted at the Midfield Line on either side, where the substituion markers are

Davids looked bad at the end of the season, didn't play near as much for Tottenham. As for Makaay i don't have an answer. He was an assasin during qualification, but van basten hasn't been wrong about much since he took over. With RVN, Kuyt, and van persie they look to have a strong frontline anyhow.

Who else besides Keller would you put in goal? Meola? :p Howard? Brad?

Meola is a joke (on international levels I mean, not MLS).

Howard has great reaction timig, but still needs work coming off the line and on set pieces like corners and free kicks.

Brad might be alright but still not better than Keller is now. Brad's play seems to be starting to go down hill due to age.

Keller may be old, but he has kept his skills and health up while other older keepers haven't, and the younger American keepers still have a bit to go until they reach Keller/Friedel/Howard quality. Besides, keepers have longer playing career that field players (they don't have to run/they don't get injured as much).

p.s. -"Soccer is soo BORING."
-Not anything like watching baseball or golf on TV right? There is nothing better than watching some fat middle-age white dude hit a chip shot outta the sand. Wheew!

"Soccer is a Foreign sport!"
-I like how the dummies that say this hit the golf course every weekend. Soccer is from England, I guess that's entirely different from golf being from Scotland though.

"Soccer is played by the weak and unathletic."
-Yeah unlike baseball where amazing human specimens like David Wells, Greg Maddox, John Kruk, Echiro, Etc. (I really could go all day) are not only playing, but are all-stars.

I actually really like baseball (playing and watching), but saying things like what I put above are just ignorant. Like the older sports writers that don't understand the game, so they belittle it instead of putting in the littlest bit of effort to learn something about it.

Strongbad- Good description of the different styles of play around the world. I would have described them exactly the same.

86 Tex Ag- Rarely, but it does happen. You'll see keepers come out to take free kicks on their side of the field often. And they won't pull the keeper (limited substitutions in WC play btw). Most keepers are surprisingly skillfull, and will come up to help in desperate situations (usually a free kick).

Agg bock- Nice troll. I will say though, that once my buddies started understanding the sport, and what was going on, they too thought the games were intense. Any second a team can get a break-away and score....and it's fun to see attempts develop across a playing field that size, in a sport that has constant motion.

Aggiebird- I agree about Keller. He's great, but is definately going to need a 'Friedel-like' showing this go 'round (Friedel in '02)

I thought Howard was going to be our next star. I could not wait to see him play in this WC. While he's good, he's been slow to grasp the whole game, and like you said, needs work coming off the line.

I would actually go into the euro thing a bit more, as its more than just north vs south. England does do a lot of nice buildup and passing, but they also just launch the long ball to their forwards more than any team in the history of the world. Some of this might be from years of playing in the worst field condiditions ever. Germans tend to have a rock solid d, and great combination passing and buildup, and they are probably the most dominate in the air.(set pieces, services into the box) The dutch, who used to be my 2nd favorite team) are usually the most versatile, imo. They like to string together a lot of passes, and then look to slot someone through after they get your defense out of position. They do use crosses in their attack, just not quite as much as the germans or english. Also, their outside backs and mids overlap each other a lot, and are usually somewhat capable of playing either position, and their midfielders can be seen to be floating around in different areas a lot.

In my personal opinion, I think our current us team plays a mixture of the dutch and german style, in that we mostly play the dutch style, but we are more physically proficient on d and in the air.
Now if this is hard to read or has bad grammar, im on a lot of pain meds. Hope you can read it.
