I like how the dummies that say this hit the golf course every weekend. Soccer is from England, I guess that's entirely different from golf being from Scotland though
That is a good point but golf pretty much has been owned by American golfers since the 20's: Hagen, Jones, Hogan, Nelson, Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus, Tiger. It's not exactly the same as trying to get an American audience to accept a game that has not had much presence in this country, professionally speaking.
Now, my problem with soccer is this. This is not a slam, just my frustration trying to watch it. I went to a WC game in Dallas (Spain v Korea) and was amazed at the passing and strategy that don't get shown on tv cuz the dang field is so big. In person when a player boots the ball downfield you can see the player he is passing to cutting to the ball, on tv its just a guy clearing the ball. IMO Soccer doesn't translate well on tv.
When I watch a game I find myself yelling "shoot" all the time. It seems like shots on goal only come when the ball has advanced well into the penalty box. Hockey has the slapshot from the point, basketball has the 3 pt shot, football the long run or throw, baseball the home run. There is no slapshot from the top of the penalty box in soccer (at least its pretty infrequent). When the ball is being advanced almost to the penalty box I am looking for shots and the shots don't come. There is probably good reason for that but as a fan I see action in the middle 80% of the field that has NO CHANCE of resulting in a score. Basketball, hockey, football, baseball all have scoring that can happen at virtually any part of the field of play. Hockey & Basketball less but the court/ice is small enough to allow advancing quickly that will result in a score. Soccer doesn't have that. When I see guys battling for possesion at midfield, why do I care? The ball changes possession so much it seems like useless action unless they are deep in the opponent's field. That keeps my interest very limited.
