He was a great coach to take us to a respectable level, but we need someone who can take us beyond. we are lacking in essential skills that no national team can succeed without.
1) ball handling and passing. how to trap and control and thread pinpoint passes through a defense, we don’t seem to know how
2) set pieces. how many times will we have a great opportunity right outside the box and send it out of bounds?
3) how to build from the back. Keller blasted the ball almost every single time he had a chance...and sent it right to the Ghana keeper who rolled it out to his midfield. fine you got a strong leg ,but lets try to keep possession once in awhile.
4) patience. we don’t keep possession in the midfield beyond 2-3 passes and then try to volley in. how about moving it around and waiting for the right opportunity, that way we control the game and pick or targets
5) finishing. Just put the D*MN ball in the net! Yes we were unlucky, but how about a bit better aim?
Yes, yes, the refs sucked and jobbed us bad on a few calls. If you ever notice though, championship teams also get bad calls against them. And win anyway. Bad calls are going to happen in every game, real teams can put it behind them, mediocre teams let it beat them and complain about it after the game.
I like Arena, he has brought us to a level never before seen in US Soccer, but it isn’t the top and I don’t think he can take us there anymore. Lets bring in a new coach, someone who coaches in Europe and has had success at a national team and European Club level and has a reputation as a teacher. Bring in some new blood. Renya, Keller, McBride (my favorite player) a few others should never play in the NT team jersey again. We have 4 years to build the next WC squad and they wont be on it. No one who wont be there in 2010 should play again. Bring in Cooper, Adu, Spector, Bradley, Eskie, Rossi (if he wants to) and others. Get Gooch in the EPL, drag Donovan kicking and screaming back to Europe, Get Howard Starting in the EPL for 4 years. Enter the Copa America and schedule European Friendlys in Europe at least 6 times a year. Use the Gold Cup and the Confederations Cup to battle test the squad for 2010.
And I know what most feel about the MLS, but it has gotten much better over the years and we needed to grow it more. More Club friendlies, DC United vs. Manchester United. Real Salt Lake vs. Real Madrid. FC Dallas vs. AC Milan. Etc.
Each MLS team should partner with a club in Europe, in the off season send the MLS teams to train at the European Clubs grounds, practice against their players. The European teams will be in the middle of their season and at a high fitness level and could significantly raise the level of play for the MLS team. Play 2-3 friendlies a year against the partner club. MLS should enter the Cope Sudamericana and take the CONCACAF Championship and World Club Champiosnhip seriously. IN the off season look for tournaments to play in, like the Peace Cup or La Manga Cup, enter them and win them.
Bring in some European stars a bit past their prime, but good enough to raise the level of play in MLS. Beckham, Ronaldo, Nedved, Zindane, etc We need a youth system like the Dutch, feeding into the MLS teams, and when the stars in MLS get good enough, send them to Europe to temper them and finish the forging of players.
