What has been wrong with Holmes? They have been in the top 20 every year he has been coach.

In basketball, the #20 team can beat the #1 team on any given day. In swimming, this is laughably impossible. In swimming there are virtually no upsets; there is an insurmountable gap betwen #20 and #1. Perrennial top 5 are the ones who compete for NC's; everyone else is just picking up their scraps.

I would have like to see BB at least contact Butch Newman at Trinity University...

Butch Newman begins his 19th season as head tennis coach at Trinity and his 14th season as both the men's and women's head coach.

In the last 2 years, he led both the men's and women's tennis teams to the NCAA Quarterfinals. It was the fifth time in the past six years that Newman has led both teams to the quarterfinals or better in the postseason.

In 2000, Newman led both teams to the NCAA Division III National Championship, marking it the first time in history that a school won both Division III tennis titles.

Newman has led the women's team to 13 consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles, advancing to the playoffs every year since 1991 (12 straight years). The men's team has won 12 of 13 SCAC titles, including 11 in a row, advancing to the playoffs for 11 straight years.

Newman was named the ITA Men's Division III Coach of the Year in 1994, and the West Region Women's Coach of the Year in 1996. He has also earned SCAC Coach of the Year 7 times for both men's and women's tennis combined.

Before coming to Trinity full time, Newman was the director of tennis at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio from 1984-87. A native of San Antonio, Newman earned his bachelor's degree from Trinity in 1965. He then served in the United States Marine Corps for three and a half years, attaining the rank of captain.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Newman was the assistant tennis pro at the San Antonio Country Club for one year. He served as the director of tennis at the T Bar M Racquet Club from 1970-74, before taking the head tennis pro position at Brook Hollow Golf Club. He worked at Brook Hollow until his appointment at the Dominion.

As a player, Newman's 53-2 singles record at Trinity is the best in school history. He was captain of the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team from 1961-63 and coached the squad in 1965. Newman, a two-time all-American, along with doubles partner Chuck McKinley were Trinity's first tennis all-Americans in 1963.

During his career he played many world-class tournaments, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and captured 14 national singles and doubles titles. Newman is also a member of the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame.

In addition to his coaching duties, Newman teaches several physical education courses and serves as the campus sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

A Division III tennis coach? I don't think so.
He's been there 19 seasons and it's his alma mater; not a chance of him leaving even if we did want him. And there would be a MUCH bigger uproar over that hire than Denton.

We can start with Jay Holmes and Rob Childress. Both of whom have been stunningly successful.

Interesting that you mentioned Jay Holmes. Interesting because some one here knows who the men's swimming coach is.

Has anyone considered that maybe BB is pressed for budget? When Holmes was hired - BB hired the top track coach in the country. Paid big bucks for him, too. He "hired" Jay - a longtime A&M assistant and probably a bargain compared to what Dave Marsh (Auburn) or Eddie Reese (Texas) are paid. Maybe our new tennis coach is extremely affordable. I can't believe we paid a lot to hire him with his history.

I remain unconvinced that BB is committed to men's swimming. BB of course completely screwed up Holmes promotion by initially giving him a one year contract. That was essntially a "don't bet on me" signal to recruits. We are not gaining on Texas. We lost a very good group of seniors - and we have almost no first class sprinters on the team. We have one of the finest pools in the country, located where we should be attractive to talent from anywhere in the US. But we're not getting any American top talent.

Spicewood ag....as long as Ed Reese is coaching at Texas you need to get comfortable with where you are. He is the best and gets the best swimmers in the country. On top of that, he also takes some kids with positive upside who are not elite recruits and turns them into great preformers.

NO reason to be disappointed, he is just the best.

frank busch at arizona is pretty damn good also and they beat the sh*t out of the horns this year and he was named national coach of the year and finished #2..still not sure how this thread got turned in to men's swimming coaches debate

rikochet - Eddie Reese is indeed one of the best. Not sure he is better than Marsh at Auburn (how many national championships in the last ten years?).

A swim roster has about 25 kids. The USA (and foreign countries) is loaded with elite swimmers. There is no reason for A&M not to recruit better than Ohio State (for example) or Northwestern, or SMU, or many other schools out of the top 5. But we aren't.

I have huge respect for Eddie and have met him. But he couldn't reel in Scott Spann from Austin - who chose Michigan. Scott is probably the best freshman breastroke swimmer in the US (6th at long course nationals in 200 breast). My point is simply that there is more than enough talent for A&M to get more of it than we do today.

I think Steve Denton will teach his stokes out of the water. I like Coryhub am confused about the tennis coach hire being put in the pool. The water tends to warp the rackets and makes the strings break, so lets don't swim with them.

Has Denton announced who will be his assistant and will that make the situation better concerning recruiting?

Spicewood AGs I see your point and assume you know swimming and diving. I was making the point more concerning ATM vs UT in swimming instead of on a national level. For Texas A&M it will be almost impossible to consistantly compete with Texas as long as Ed is there. However, there is room to challenge. You have a fast pool and good facilities. That should attract elite swimmers or those with the ability to develop into elite swimmers. If it isnt happening then that is a different problem.

As for Scott Spann jr, some kids just want to create their own destiny. Get away and be a part of something else not in the shadow of a famous father.I really have no knowledge concerning this issue. Scott Sr. is a Longhorn legend. He was an all american and won the 1981 NCAA 100 meter butterfly. That was also the year Texas won the first of its 9 national championships. I have no idea what kind of relationship he has with Ed however I know several former Texas swimmers and have yet to meet one who speaks badly of Ed Reese.

Gary Hall Jr. chose Texas in the 90s and stayed in college one year. His father was an Olympian but Gary wanted to get away.He didnt go to his fathers school. I assume other kids want to do the same. Especially those who want to make their own way. If anyone wants to dog Ed about recruiting you have picked the wrong guy. He is a swimming icon and legendary coach. You dont get there without being a great recruiter.

And is that you Cory still runnin noise? Bout Swimmin? I bet they have a pool at your new club dont they? That or you must of stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night....might try pickin a different sport to run noise on the Horns. The Longhorns might not be in a class by themselves but the class they are in it doesnt take long to call roll.

I am definitely not dogging Reese on his recruiting. He is one of the very best IN THE WORLD at his craft. My comment about Scott Spann is that Eddie will not get everyone he wants. The youngest Spann is a superstar in the making and should enjoy his days swimming in the same workouts as Phelps.

My main point is simply that A&M is not getting the recruits it should. Texas can only take 6-8 per year. Same with Auburn, Arizona, Georgia, Stanford, etc. A&M's women are very close to Texas right now and if a coaching change had not been made at Texas, I'd bet that A&M would beat Texas at Big12s next spring.

Different story for the men.

1985 ag...interesting comment. That is twice you have mentioned in recent weeks that "no one like's me" yet almost everyone ,with the exception of you, seems to enjoy the banter back and forth . The exchange of opinion and open discussion is part of these boards. Everyone here knows my affiliation's, yet we seem to get along.

As for the sound equipment. We could use an upgrade. Certainly not of the quality at ATM press box. That place is sweet.

Spicewood....I see your point and agree. As for women's swimming , I know little about the compitition. The coaching change brings in new blood. However, if I am not mistaken, didnt Texas women finish last season in the top ten?
Amazing how you can lose your job finishing in the top ten best programs. thoughts?

then again A&M's men's coach 'left' after finishing 11th in the country...not too hard to believe

Bottom line: Texas is used to seriously competing for national championships in swimming, men and women...not like in football where they win one every once in a blue moon...EVERY YEAR...their women have not even been remotely close for several years...not only that but A&M has made very significant gains from a conference standpoint recently, so much so that Texas' administration obviously felt the need to make a change...no one can question A&M recruited the pants off Texas last year on the women's side...if the Aggies can pull in one more class like the group that were freshmen last year, A&M will win the Big 12 title

UT finished tied for 8th last year and A&M finished 10th (just 3 points less than Texas) at the NCAAs last year. During Richard Quick's time at Texas they won five NCs in a row. So UT's women's program has slowly slid. One of their best swimmers, Hayley McGregory, transferred to USC in the middle of the season, and an assistant coach, Mike Walker, took a leave of absence before mid-season. Then Jill Sterkel was fired.

Edit - 8th sounds OK, but Texas scored 93 points. Champion Auburn scored 379. Georgia had 326. Texas was not close to top 5. Hence the coaching change. A&M is equally far away from top 5, but is moving up, with a very strong group of freshmen and sophomores.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
aggie1985... that question was almost civil. We are making progress. As to your question , I heard earlier this week that there were three to five different guys he was talking to. I am not at liberty to mention names seeing that my info is just hearsay. It would be assumed that the new assistant will be someone who can spend a lot of time on the court with the players. What I mean is that he will be young and be able to compete with them as a regular hitting partner as well as an instructor. It is very common for head coaches to have guys that can grind for long hours on the court as an assistant.

rikochet - any comment on the assistant hire? Bob McKinley is a great hire. He brings a wealth of experience from all levels of tennis. Congrats Bob.
Coryhub
How long do you want to ignore this user?
mckinley does bring a lot of experience, but from an asst perspective its a little odd hire...95% of assistant coaches are young and used as hitting partners and relate well to the players and are big in building relationships for recruiting since they are just a few years older than the players...plus the asst do a lot of the leg and paperwork..

Bob is certainly well known and well respected in the San Antonio tennis community especially for his work with top juniors but I have to say I find this to be a pretty surprising move by him and by A&M.

How did we land Bob McKinley? I remember his teams at Trinity in the 70's. All the top players in the country wanted to play at USC or Trinity. Interesting move at this point in his life-anyone have any inside info here.

Bobby McKinley has no peer when it comes to knowledge of Junior tennis. He will be a great asset for Steve. I agree with Cory on this one though. The job of assistant coach in tennis is a grueling task best preformed by the young.
College players want to hit with coaches who have game and can stay on he court with them. IMO , there will have to be adjustments to make this work. Might take a grad assistant who is a gamer to help. Recruiting will be interesting as well. I know very few college assistant coaches who don't spend enormous hours on the court and still has a boat load of other resposibilities.

There are many fine , hard working assistant coaches throughout college tennis but imo the best is Ricardo Rubio at Texas. He is a tireless worker and loves his job. Another fast riser is Nick Crowell at Florida State. There are many more but few with the work ethic of these two.

While I agree Ricardo and Nick are very good assistant coaches you neglected to mention the best two, Don Johnson of North Carolina and Tony Bresky of Virginia (Actually also both the last 2 National Assistant Coaches of the Year). I wish we would have hired one of these 2 as our head coach instead. Both are young, energetic and have proven they can recruit american talent. UNC made the rd of 16 last year with little talent and UVa has won the ACC 3 years in row, all since Bresky has been the Assistant. Good luck to Bob, I'm sure he'll be great.
