Men's Swimming ---> does a walk on have a chance or is it a waste of time?

Have you been talking to Jay? If the roster is full or you need to drop a little time, swim for AGS for a year.

I knew several guys that did, and looking back I wish I had. One guy I knew walked on his soph year after swimming with AGS and went on to go to NCAA's on the medley relay. Go for it if you have the chance.

I know one guy on the team now who walked on last year. Was redshirted and is still swimming.

It isn't about me ...I am a board member of one of our local swim clubs. Some of the kids (H.S. freshman & sophs) are talented and are already looking ahead to college. They have their sights on smaller schools but also want to give a Division 1 a shot.

well in that case, of course it is worth it. the team is pretty limited scholarship-wise (just as every men's swim team is) and so there are plenty of swimmers on the team that are "walk-ons" in the sense that they don't have any monetary aid but have a spot on the roster

One good thing about swimming recruiting is that by the time a kid is starting his senior year he should have a good idea of where he stands. I believe that A&M's basic criteria for a walk-on is having two junior national cuts, at least it was back under the old junior's system.

There are circumstances that change this either direction. In a strong year the roster just might not have enough room. Or, if a kid hasn't had top level training, but has still done well he might get the benefit of the doubt.

One thing my USS coach told me was to go on recruiting trips even if my mind was made up because you never know what you will like. Some kids just fit in better at smaller schools even if they are fast enough to go to a bigger program.

I'm no expert on this topic, so please feel free to correct me if anyone has better info or advice.
