Listen, my intentions are not to downplay the importance of any branch of our national defense or Ali's contributions to the sport of boxing, I just find it odd that people are trying to prop Ali up as something he is not.

Nice try, but why not serve in the Army for a possibility to go in the front lines?

Have you ever served on a front line? "Any man who truly wants to go to war has truly never been there." Believe me I know.

Ali is a fraud and shouldn't be labeled as an American hero. While other whites, blacks, mexicans and others served he got rich. If he didn't want to fight that's fine, he could have cooked or helped in some way or form. He could have been a medic to help save the men from dying.

So what? He was a great boxer...big deal! What did that do to help you, or me, or any other American?? Some of you hold athelete's in too high of a regard just because they are athelete's. To me, that don't mean shyte!! It's what you do a a person that makes you.

Uh, not sure I follow?? How do you come to that conclusion from my last post?? Michael J. Fox, and Ali also have Parkinson's, and they are using their star power to cure the disease that they have. Do you think they would use all of that energy on the disease if they didn't have it? Just wondering.

Well from your last post your stated that its meaningful what you do as a person. He along with Fox are primary spokesmen and fundraisers for a cure.

Does this not mean anything from a humanitarian prospective?

By coincidence I watched a documentary yesterday called “The Last Round” that focused on a Canadian fighter named George Chuvalo and his pending fight with Ali.
While laying the background for the film the topic of Ali’s draft status came up, and this old school sports reporter that had been covering Ali at the time (I’ve seen him on television several times but can’t remember his name) said after Ali received the phone call he went into an angry rant of “Why me!” and that the conscientious objector card was played later.

They probably wouldn't be if they weren't inflicted with the disease. Try again.

MaroonMachine, an answer to the edited version of your post, do you belive that Ali is soley doing this for himself?

I seriously doubt that at his young age(sarcasm), he wants to enjoy the rest of life on a yatch in the Carribean.

MaroonMachine, its funny to see you continously try to find a way to degrade someone's integrity and intentions.

Quite frankly that last response was sophmoric, would you rip him a new one if he just sat idle and did nothing but rot away?

I always thought Ali got hosed. Back in the sixties Ali was the only "famous athelete" to be drafted. All of the others somehow managed to not get thier number called.
No one from the NFL, NBA or baseball draft ever got drafted. There might be an exception but they are few.

I will stay out of the draft dodging debate as I have no idea what was in his heart when he made that decision.

I can't stand the guy for an interview he did post 9/11. As the most famous and beloved Muslim in the world he was asked to condemn the attacks. He declined to do so indicating that he had financial interests all over the world and had to be concerned about that. What a load of crap! He refused to condemn, in any fashion, the WTC attacks because he was worried about his own money! That says it all about the man right there. Imagine how powerful it could have been for him to come out with an anti-violence statement. What a chicken#$%!

TEtoWER: What is incorrect?

We may not be talking about the same interview. This was big time prime time interview covering many subjects. The interviewer (can't remember who) seemed so uncomfortable with his answer of not condemning that he didn't dwell on it. There were a couple of shows that jumped on it the next day but then the story died. It was a disgrace and would never have died if any other celebrity had done what he did. But with the Parkinsons angle nobody wants to be seen as bullying him.

BTW, before that interview I had no problem with Ali.

Cassius Clay changed his religion to keep from fighting. His actions were an insult to all the men who fought and died for this country.

He claimed his new found religion preached peace and not fighting. Well, you see how his religion feels about fighting. Maybe not face to face, but sure will blow **** up to kill innocent people.

And NO, his imprisonment was not sufficient for his betrayal of his country.

I agree, he was one of the best boxers of all time, but his personal character leaves a lot to be desired, IMO.

If everyone acted as he did, we would either be speaking German or Japanese today.

I gather from your childish name calling, retraction, and furthermore your assumptions surrounding my intentions it’s not possible to carry on a civilized discussion with you. You managed to go off on a tangent and left the above question unanswered too.

But I will leave this discussion with a rhetorical question for you, that way you don’t have to beat yourself up scrounging around for an answer.

How do you know the intentions in a man’s heart?

Mr Bean,
Ali was a great boxer and a man who stood up for what he believed in. He didn't run off to Canada, he simply refused to fight for a country he didn't really believe in. At that point can you blame him? Racism, segregation, anyone?

Evil will always win because good is dumb.

amc123 do you feel the same way in regards to someone like Lance Armstrong, Christopher Reeves, you could name almost a dozen?

Are they also trash in your opinion? Think before you say something.

Cassius Clay re Ali could take a punch, but look at what it has cost him.-- A quivering smallish man.

TEtoWR:

Does it not seem strange to you that all of the "humanitarian" good deeds that you have listed (Parkinson's, conscientious objection) are issues that directly affected him at the time that he took up the cause? Two rhetorical questions for you: Do you think he would have protested the war in Viet Nam if he hadn't been drafted? Do you think he would have taken up the fight for Parkinson's - albeit a noble cause - had he not developed the disease?

Bottom line is that he was one of the greatest boxers of all time. However, others have as much right (and reason) to have the opinion that he was a self-serving charlatan as you do to think of him as a hero.

i have no respect for a man who refuses to serve his country and then stands in front of the cameras and proclaims himself a "baaaad man". he is a selfish conceited punk who only cares about himself and money.
