My picks:
EAST
#1 Buffalo vs. #8 NY Islanders -- Buffalo in 5
The Isles goalie situation, the depth and skills of Buffalo....only my aversion to calling for a sweep of a team that's on a 4-game winning streak and fought their way into the playoffs causes this to be a 5 game series.
#2 New Jersey vs. #7 Tampa Bay -- Tampa Bay in 7
Too many injuries, not enough goals and asking Brodeur to do it all will end the Devils run early this year.
#3 Atlanta vs. #6 NY Rangers -- Rangers in 6
Atlanta has some serious concerns on the power play so if the series becomes a special-teams battle that's bad for them; but they have a ton of skill. Unfortunately for them, the Rangers have allowed the 2nd fewest goals on all the eastern playoff teams. Until Atlanta proves they can win in the playoffs, they won't get my pick to advance through round 1.
#4 Ottawa vs. #5 Pittsburgh -- Ottawa in 6
Man, what a story that would be...Crosby and the Pens charge deep into the playoffs and bring glory and joy to all of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, not going to happen. It's simple, don't let the Pens on the power play (they're over 20%) and Ottawa wins. Both of these teams score goals in bunches and Ottawa is due for some playoff success.
WEST
Let me preface this with saying I watch primarily Western Conference hockey. Every team in the playoffs in the West has over 100 points -- that's astounding and shows either 1) a great deal of parity in the West or 2) the 3-point games are artificially boosting point totals. I haven't decided which.
#1 Detroit vs. #8 Calgary -- Detroit in 6
Calgary had to fight hard to keep that 8th spot to get to play Detroit. Unfortunately, the Flames have absolutely SUCKED away from home this season. The only hope they have against the Wings is for Kiprusoff to stand on his head in 4 games. The Wings have more skills, speed and a guy named Bertuzzi who is supposed to show up for Game 1. Despite playing playoff games for the last month to stay in the hunt, I'm going with the Wings (and it hurts me to do that.)
#2 Anaheim vs. #7 Minnesota -- Ducks in 6
The Ducks are awesome at home. The Wild are good away. The Ducks have great goaltending and hit for over 22% on the Powerplay. The Wild don't know who their goalie is going to be and are hitting arond 18% on the poweplay. Don't let the goalie thing for the Wild confuse you -- they won the Jennings Trophy this year for fewest goals allowed. Both teams are pretty good on the PK. The goaltending and Ducks with home ice makes this series theirs to lose.
#3 Vancouver vs. #6 Dallas -- Dallas in 7
If you're a fan of the 13-14 goal hockey games, you'll hate this series. This one will be a lot of 1-0, 2-1, and maybe if you're REALLY lucky 3-2 games. These teams are virtually identical and are probably going to be the best matchup in the first round. Which sucks for me because I'm a Dallas fan and would prefer a 4-game sweep of the Canucks. The story here will be goaltending -- Turco vs. Luongo. Dallas has been finding ways to win 1 goal games all year and since I'm biased, I'll stick with them in 7.
#4 Nashville vs. #5 San Jose -- Sharks in 6
The other rival for best first round match-up. I hate picking the Sharks. I hate it with the fires of a thousand suns; but I think they'll blow up Vokun in net for Nashville. The Sharks are hitting on over 22% on the PP and the Canes are a meager 16%. The Sharks, like the rest of the Pacific Division, have been kicking the crap out of everyone lately. God, please let me be wrong.
So, there you have my first round thoughts,
