I second Randy Matson...he was one heck of an athlete

Mary Zorn is the 'archery chick' who won a few world championships while at A&M a few years back

Without a doubt - Randy Matson. He only won a gold medal, broke the world record twice, at one point broke the American record three times in one month, and was the American champion six times.

shuon madden was an amazing college player, 4 time All American and doubles indoor champion...but he didnt do anything on the pro tour so its tough to say he is even the best tennis player, since Connell was #1 in the world and 3 time Wimbledon finalist...

Forgot another bigtime guy, Walter "Buddy" Davis. He was named by USA Track & Field as the top male two-sport athlete in history (track/basketball) a few years ago. Jackie Joyner-Kersee was the female. Davis set the world record in the high jump and won the gold medal at the '52 Olympics. He also was an All-American basketball player at A&M and went on to play several productive seasons in the NBA.

Who was the long jumper from a couple years back? Can't remember his name at the moment, but he was the world record holder at one point I think.

Mary Zorn had some top-notch accomplishments while at TAMU. She was pretty unbeatable during whole career here. Regardless of what you think about archery, her record is extremely impressive.

Eric Sehn is another good one: 9 Big 12 titles in 9 attempts and still has another year to go...has been top eight at NCAA's 8 of 9 times too

Not even close: Randy Matson - Olympic gold and I think silver medal winner. He broke the 70' barrier in the shot put.

From Wikipedia:
quote:
From 1965 through 1971, Matson entered 79 competitions and won 73 of them. In a two month span in 1965 he broke the world record three times, adding over 2 feet to the previous mark, until it stood at 21.52m (70'7.25". He earned his B.B.A. in Marketing from Texas A&M in 1967, and was then drafted by teams in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and the American Basketball Association. He turned them all down to concentrate on track and field.

Was a nice asset on the basketball court too.

I'm going to go with:

Eric Sehn

Winningest BIG 12 Champion (of any sport) in school history.

Personally swept all his events (9) and he still has one more year to go.

Sounds like your best A&M athlete right there, if your not including guys who have gone and competed professionaly.

Matson without a doubt. He won the Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the country. That's kind of like a Heisman Trophy-- a very big deal. he also was a groundbreaker as the first guy to toss the 16-pound ball 70 feet, and he was an All-SWC hoopster for Shelby Metcalf to boot. In addition, he was drafted by the NFL, NBA and Major League baseball. Coach Metcalf once said if Matson would have wanted to, he could have been heavyweight champ. No one else in A&M history even compares, although Buddy Davis is close.

Another vote for Matson. At one time, of the 25 longest throws in history, he had 23 or 24 of them. He was also a good discus thrower, and could probably have been a record holder there had he concentrated on it. Not that it matters in this discussion, but he is also one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet.

Forgot to add--he's also the one person named that in his prime was truly world-famous (at least in the sports world).

I was going to say Randy Matson and second place isn't close but after reading that Buddy Davis was also a world record holder and an Olympic gold medalist and an accomplished athlete in other sports , I have to say it's a tie. Anyone who wins the Olympics and at any point has done something better than anyone in the world ever has done, has to be number one.

I would have to say Stacy Sykora for the ladies division as well. Isnt she still with team USA?

i agree with Eric Sehn. as far as outside of A&M, he should be competing in the Olympics in '08 for canada, and he should push for a medal

Guys, I'm sure Eric Sehn is an incredible athlete, but he has a long way to go before he is even in Randy Matson's universe...

Matson won All-District football honors, and was a two-time All-District and one-time All-State basketball player, averaging 15 points per game. In track and field, he was a two-time State Champion in both the shot put and the discus and could run the 100 yard dash in 10.2 seconds. This led him to be named an All-State and All-American in track and field.

He chose to attend Texas A&M University, where he continued to work on his shot put skills. In his first full year of using the heavier college shot (16 pounds), Matson won the Olympic Silver Medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

From 1965 through 1971, Matson entered 79 competitions and won 73 of them. In a two month span in 1965 he broke the world record three times, adding over 2 feet to the previous mark, until it stood at 21.52m (70'7.25). He earned his B.B.A. in Marketing from Texas A&M in 1967, and was then drafted by teams in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and the American Basketball Association. He turned them all down to concentrate on track and field.

This is all from Wikipedia. Eric Sehn does not have a Wikipedia page. Someone should make one for him.

Again, I'm sure Eric Sehn is great, but Randy Matson is the greatest of all time.

Matson wins hands down in my book.

Nobody mentioned Curtis Dickey? He was national champion several times over.
