Should Fat-Shaming Make a Comeback?

Back in the day, being a "fatty" came with consequenceslike a solid dose of public shaming. And guess what? There were way fewer of them waddling around. No iPhones back then either, so they couldn't Doordash their 3am taco binges.

But then, body-shaming got canceled, courtesy of the early prototypes of today's wokes. So, now people eat without a care in the world, and voilwelcome to the age of Big Macs and even bigger waistlines.

Fast forward to 2024, and we've got a full-on fat-demic. Every corner of America is looking like the aftermath of an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The solution? Simple. Bring back the fat-shaming!

So if you're on Team KFC more than Team Gym, then the sting of public ridicule might just be the nudge you need to ditch those Big Macs and replace 'em with some veggies.

What do you think? Should tough love and tough crowds come back, or is that too much truth to handle?

I think it should make a comeback. I reached 20 lbs over my limit this past month. I think some fat shaming earlier this year would have helped me.

For all the children - teenagers ... dang man. They may be in good shape now, but they dont have the fear of god from elementary of being fat. I'd expect that group to completely let it go in their 20s and help the USA be even fatter than now!

Problem would fix itself if governments got out of the healthcare industry. If we start letting people die that can't afford their medication, they will take better care of themselves. Or they would die. Problem solved either way.

bullying should be encouraged generally. Most of society's ills are because people didnt have a bully to set them straight.

I agree. Fat people are disgusting. They should all be shunned from society until they are an acceptable weight.

I've put on weight recently after an injury. Its shameful and I should be, and am, ashamed of it. Some people have had shame in general deprogrammed from their brains.

Fat-shaming is only fair if the fat guy is allowed to turn around and beat the crap out of the guy doing the shaming.

Was looking at old photos of people back in the 1950s & 1960s. No one was fat in the photos.

def. think that shaming parents of fat small children should be shamed.

Dropping off my kids at school, man, there aren't many, but there are few kids in 1st/2nd/3rd grade that are full on michelin man already.

If its ok to fat shame people is it also ok to shame anorexic people? Aren't they both mostly caused by emotional issues, depression, etc? Seems like two sides of the same dinner plate to me.

how can you fatties beat the crap out of anyone with your hands full of McDonald's and Ho-Hos?

Now a threat to be eaten might work better.

Taking this question seriously, this is where I land on things.

It's one thing to shame people for being fat, which I don't necessarily agree with.

But celebrating them, and "body positivity", is ridiculous.

As a fat ass, I agree with this. But I also don't approve of fat shaming. Just do you and leave others alone. Seems pretty simple.

I would agree, but unfortunately peoples' poor health choices cause healthcare costs to rise for everyone.

This is probably going to blow your mind but you don't have to be fat to lose weight. Athletes do it all the time.

The idea of fat-shaming is a contentious one, and it's essential to consider the broader implications. While some argue that public accountability might motivate healthier choices, shaming often leads to negative consequences like low self-esteem and mental health issues. Instead of fostering a supportive environment, it could push individuals away from seeking help.

Promoting healthy habits through encouragement and education might be a more effective approach. Creating a culture that emphasizes well-being rather than shame could lead to better outcomes for everyone. What do you think? Can we inspire change without resorting to shame?

"good intentions" and pandering have done nothing to move the dial.

Nor the weight on the scales.

By every bit of evidence... being fat is bad for you.

You eat more, you spend more to eat more.

you (likely) exercise less

you internalize it and the impacts on you more.

etc.

Being fat should be treated same as we do diseases. Things to be overcome. For the good of both the fatty and society in general.

Should be treated as a profound moral failing to be avoided. Diseases happen to you beyond your control. People being grossly obese is a symptom of something far worse than just the obesity itself. People aren't so fat now because a disease is running rampant, they're so obese now because shame is missing from society.

But what if I am concerned about your health and don't want you to die at 45? You obviously won't stop stuffing your face every day so the only way I can think of is to laugh at you and shame you.
