How do you make your one phone call if they take your cell phone? Not like you know anybody's number anymore. Will the jail people google your lawyers number or something? Hopefully a question I never need the answer to, but just something that stuck in my mind.

I know the house number for my grandparents house anddddd my mom's cell phone number.

Many jails post the number for both bail bondsmen and defense attorneys…or did back in the day… in the booking /intake area. So you get booked for a specific offense(s) and there may also be a bail schedule for the crime posted near a phone. If you think you are going to get arrested it may be wise to call the jail ahead of time to clear this up with jail staff.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's probably up to the discretion of the jail staff. I have a relative who went through a manic phase (unmedicated bipolar) where he got arrested at least 6 times in two months, and he sure as hell was able to call me every single time. There is no way he could remember anyone's phone number in his state of mind (and really I doubt he would have ever known mine, even when mentally well and sober) so I suspect they must have let him look at his phone.

Majority of the time, they'll let you get a couple numbers out of your cell phone and write it on a piece of paper (while they watch to make sure you're aren't calling/texting from it). If you're an ass, all bets are off.

Yep. Best bet is to always be super chill and polite…so I've heard

Aside from needing to know the number, the biggest problem is that most cell providers do not accept collect calls.
