My Mother-in-law was friends with her when she lived in Miami, and my wife and her siblings used to go over to their house and their nanny (Kathy Lee Gifford) would watch the kids while the parents went out on a double date. Per my Mom, Anita had lots of gay friends, open and closeted. Her husband was very involved in his, I believe it was, Baptist Church in Miami, and the pastor used her fame to try to promote anti-gay stances. It cost Anita her career and a lot of friends, and as the article states she became the butt of a lot of jokes. My mother-in-law sent out her obituary to everyone in the family, and her words were, "She was quite unsophisticated. Her husband Bob got her into this mess. It must have seemed a very cruel world for her as it turned out".
Life can get really complicated.

She knew what she was doing, and in the highly unlikely event she was some unwitting pawn, she had almost 50 years to clear up any misunderstanding about it allegedly being her husband pulling the strings, particularly after they divorced. She could easily have looked to Tammy Faye Bakker for inspiration.
