We grew up with "from the university health science center in Houston, I'm Doctor Red Duke" and sometimes Justin Wilson. Does anybody remember the cook whose tag line was "and ohhhh, it's so good?" He always wore a the chef boyardee hat, an apron and had a salt and pepper beard

I just recall that hard rock and metal had a near death experience in the 90s after going strong since around 1968 onward.

If you didn't watch the local news, the weather was a guessing game filled with surprises. I think there was a weather section in the daily newspaper. Speaking of which, the newspaper was the "iPhone" back in the day in regards to information.

My dad was an Army aviator, and in the early '80s he flew air ambulance out of San Antonio. It was great for the Army trauma teams to practice with real cases, for the aviators and the medical teams. It actually started in 1970. And it was a free service in the areas it was available.

The creation of Life Flight led to the Army ending its service, in part to not compete with civilian companies. And Life Flight sort of gets credit for "creating" air ambulance to hospitals, despite the fact the Army had been doing it for a decade or more.

I'll never forget. We were at memorial Herman for my sister being in a bad car wreck. On the elevator, it's me, my mom and dad and my grandparents. Red Duke gets on. My mom starts geeking out because she's a nurse and knows who he is. My grandpa has no idea. He was a small town preacher and city attorney. Dr. Duke looks down at my grandpas ring, ask what year he is and they then proceed to talk like old friends for a long time even after getting off the elevator. My grandpa looks at my mom, and says "That fella sure was a nice guy."

Anyone remember Alvin "At Night" Van Black on Channel 13?

He'd wear a tuxedo and check out parties, restaurants, bars, swanky grand openings, etc.

Sadly he passed away years ago.

My Dad used to listen to his talk show on the radio back in the '70's.

I also grew up listening to Alvin in my Dad's car when I'd travel with him during summers… it was a very popular show at the time, but he was quite the ass to many of his callers. Years later, I started my career in TV news as an intern at KTRK in the Fall of 96 and Alvin was still there, doing his nightly "at night" segment for the 10 PM newscasts. He would trudge around the station, looking absolutely miserable… far cry from his on-air persona. I never really interacted with him since I was a lowly intern / later part-time employee, at the time, but his in-person demeanor versus his on-air demeanor were striking in their differences, at least outwardly. Alvin had a small wardrobe in the area near his desk… there were like four of the main anchors with desks in that space. I just remember how yellow the collars were on his tuxedo shirts.

Ditto this description.

I attended a HLSR scholarship banquet at the Westin Galleria. He showed up with cameraman in tow.

He was really sweaty. And not a small man. He was not tall, just big. His head was the size of a medicine ball.

He trudged around looking like a prize fighter concentrating on getting into the ring. A grimace on his face like "I need to poop but I'm in a tux".

He patted his face dry before the light and camera went on and transformed into the happy go lucky Alvin At Night we all knew on tv.

As soon as the light went off, he grumped his way to the door and was off to the next appearance.

I was fortunate to work indirectly with Dr. Red Duke at Hermann Hospital. He was a larger than life character.

One time, he was being filmed for the CBS show "48 Hours" and he folksily drawled to the crew during an interview, "Denial ain't no river in Egypt" -- a saying that wasn't really popular at the time. They ate it up.

He knew how to turn on the charm.

A couple of years before my 15 year "residency" at Kay's Lounge, but the good doctor was a fixture there back in the day, I've been told.
