Howdy Ags! Forgive me if this is in the wrong place... I don't use TexAgs much.

I'm the current station manager of KANM, Texas A&M's student radio station, and we'd love to hear from you!

We want to connect with our former students and hear about your experiences with KANM, but unfortunately, we don't have many records of old membership or good ways to reach out. If you were part of KANM during your time at A&M, please share your memories in the replies. We'd love to hear your stories!

In high school, me and my best friends found the old studio for our high school radio station, KKTY Tiger Radio. We talked the principal into letting us reopen it. He was hesitant because (come to find out) he was the DJ when he was a student there 20+ years earlier and he was actually the reason the station got shut down in the first place.

Around the same time, our favorite hangout (a little diner we always went to after school) was on the verge of closing and we found out from the owner, Max, that he needed to raise like $10,000 or he would have to close. So we put on an all night telethon and were able to raise the money at the last minute. It was great…we had an Al Bundy impersonator and our principal even came in and revised his role as "The Bopper" (his old DJ moniker)!

I was not a member, but a couple of things I remember from the 1980s

You had to hook your antenna to the cable to get the signal. It was not OTA

There was some gag my friends were always doing, calling the studio to pry out where it was located. Apparently that was a national secret. MSC?

Class of '85 here.
I had a buddy that was a DJ. In the Spring of our Surge Butt year (around Elephant Walk), he asked if I could sit in for him one day. So, I played a medley of songs that all included the word "Die": Neil Young- Hey Hey, My My; Billy Joel- Only the Good Die Young; Tanya Tucker- Texas (When I Die); Wings- Live and Let Die, etc.

The Zips caught on to what was playing and tracked my buddy down and crapped the hell out of him.... then, he ratted me out and they crapped the hell out of me.... haha

Thinking back on some other stories:

This was back in 2005-2006. My show was called The Ride and was from 12am-1am sunday nights. I played Texas Country, Red Dirt, American, etc so long as it wasn't on the Billboard charts. Being in College Station it meant getting to play a ton of local music and stuff before it went big. It was a nice way for me to get ready for the week.

I figured out how to get on some industry mailing lists and pretty soon my mailbox at the MSC was overflowing with samples, CDs, invites to shows, etc. Every month The Texas Country Music Chart would send me a CD with the top songs of the month. Two Tons of Steel once sent me their latest release and DVD Live From Gruene Hall. I could go to just about any show in college station for free as soon as they found out I had a show on KANM. I was happy to put just about anyone on my show and met a lot of really great people.

No idea what the studio looks like now but back then it was in the tiny two room place in the basement of the MSC. We had a massive record collection that covered most of the walls in the office/green room/meeting room. Sometimes I would just go in a flip through the records just to see the cover art. It was also a place where you could just go hang out any time you wanted.

Sounds like Max and the diner got saved by the bell.

Did any of the DJs screech into the microphone?

Smokin' Dave's Vintage & Much More Show. 12am to 4am on Thursday. I'm sure my listeners numbered in the 10's. It was, in fact, two turntables and a microphone. And as someone said, you had to have a certain cable package that fed through your stereo. Because it wasn't over-the-air, it was rumored that no FCC obscenity rules applied to us. One semester I roped my roommate into becoming a comedy duo and we attempted the worst unfunny Shock Jock bits in radio history. Our writing sessions lasted no more than an hour and our presentation was stilted, robotic and full of much dead air. Perhaps our biggest "hit" was a character he did...Chief Stiff Arrow. Today we would have been cancelled before sunrise.

Good question. When I left school I thought I remember them trying to raise enough money and support to get an FCC license. Although, in these times I don't know that it matters much

KAMU FM is NPR
KANM is student radio. Think alternative music and stuff like that.

KAMU FM is NPR

OK thanks. I had a friend who worked at KAMU FM back in the day (mid 90s)
