Bumping tickets from $2 to $5. Now i have to do a lot of math to figure out how many tickets i can but with my life savings. Just one hit after another these days.

Mega Millions tickets rise to $5, but the lottery promises more giant jackpots

The jackpots will be beautiful and wonderful. The best jackpots in history.

Not that I'll be buying too many of these, but there's better odds for a winning ticket in general whether that be the jackpot or a >breakeven prize.

Jackpot odds went from 1 in 303,000,000 to 1 in 290,000,000. With those odds, who wouldn't buy more?

Bring it on!
But this is coming from someone that choose not to pay the bad-at-math tax.

I used to adhere to this. But then I was at a bar with a buddy and we were talking with the bartender about "what I would do with my Lotto winnings" and when I chimed in, my buddy said "no, you can't play this game, you don't buy tickets."

That made sense to me, and I liked playing the "what if" game, so now I buy tickets every now and then. I'll spend $2-$5 maybe once or twice a month. I have won $50 and $150 plus other smaller prizes, so my net cost per year is pretty low.

I don't buy Mega or Powerball, only Tx Lotto and Tx Two-Step, since they're still $1 apiece, and at least I'll live in the same state as the winner. Two-Step is usually $500k-$1M when I play it. Not generational wealth, but life enhancing, for sure!

The whole thing has been a lie to the people of Texas since it began. They lied about odds and other things.

But at least it's funding Texas education as advertised.

Scratch-offs are a much safer investment option than Mega Millions.

Gambling is an affront to the poor. Give that money instead to people around you that may be in need.

On a more serious note, I suspect that the bulk of lottery sales go to people with gambling addictions. Lotteries are depending on sales generating a release of dopamine/serotonin/whatever for buyers. They have to up their jackpots to keep generating that same feel good chemical release for those people.

I only buy when friends are pooling money or my office does. That only occurs on the biggest jack pots. It is only for the fear that everyone wins except me.

But if I win I can help even more poor people.

The daydreaming is fun, but there is also valid logic to playing.

$5 a ticket, even if you're buying them once a week, is $260/year.

For many people, that cost is not going to materially change their life. Saving an extra $20/month isn't going to do much, even compounded over decades it's not enough to change your lifestyle.

But winning even the $1,000,000 smaller jackpot from a lottery is life changing.

It's a game with asymmetric outcomes.

Losing really isn't much of a loss. (with the exception of gambling addicts).

Winning is life altering.

With those odds and the price, the cash payout (after taxes) would need to be $1 billion in order to make the value of the ticket equal to the odds of winning.

Probably not as much as they think. $5 is enough to make people hesitate rather than "eh, just a couple bucks, you never know". We may get bigger jackpots, but it'll take longer to get there if we do.

We play in a group pool at work. We used to play Mega but won't after this increase. It will be interesting to see what happens first…does Mega see big drop in ticket buys and lowers price OR does Powerball raise their price?
Please tell me there's a special place in Heaven for Aggie fans! It's like we are living some sort of penance on Earth.

They are advertising that they paid out $4.3 million in winnings from their April 8 drawing compared to the $840k they would paid out under the old matrix. A minimum win per play is now $5 x whatever the multiplier is instead of break even. Your multiplier is generated by the machine at the time of purchase, up to 10x. That may get more people buying.
