Fogerty had that covered too:

Think it was September
The year I went away
For there were many things I didn't know
And I still see him standin'
Tryin' to be a man
I said, "Someday you'll understand"

So basically lie to your kid

People are dumber than you give them credit for.

Most people don't want your honest thoughts because they don't want their feelings hurt.

Everyone is better off if they touch grass occasionally.

Having to quiz your wife every day about supper for the rest of your life.

Also, supper is the nighttime meal. There is no dinner and supper, you Yankee.

Then what is dinner? I've never met someone who calls it supper.

According to my dad and grandfather, dinner = supper.
Lunch is you eat a real meal = dinner
Lunch snacks or sandwich stuff = lunch

To be fair the last supper was over 2,000 years ago.

That loneliness gets much harder to do something about once you get farther into adulthood and your friends pair off and keep getting married.

Keeping up with work, the house, cooking, cleaning, dogs and kids is a lot harder than I thought, but in the end you sort of find your way through it

This is what I was going to say but you put it succinctly.

The loneliness and learning how little people genuinely care.

This. And watching a parent get older. Nobody prepared me for that.

I learned very quickly that my parents were amazing at dealing with their finances. I have no idea how my parents made it on the single income of an electrician. And they paid cash for everything but their mortgage. I remember my mother making our shirts, coop buying with the neighborhood ladies, and the low cost meals we ate. But still, it's pretty crazy to learn that they set me up (as the first generation in my family to attend college) for greater "success" than they ever dreamed of having. For that I am immensely grateful.

My mom made a lot of our shirts and shorts and some pants when we were young. She of course didn't do jeans or socks or underwear or even the one or two dress shirts I had. But she made a lot of other stuff.

The economy was crap for a couple of stretches in the 70's and my dad was laid off from Reynolds Aluminum in Ingleside. My mom went back to work in a beauty shop. My dad worked for a time at Woody's Truck Service in Corpus and would work shrimp boats when that wasn't enough.

We didn't have much, but we ate good! It was common to make a big meal with another family from church. We had a lot of beans and cornbread in those days but were able to add some shrimp!

My dad would fix cars and trucks for local people on the side.

They demonstrated that you just keep finding ways to provide.

When we lost just about everything in Hurricane Celia, he made all of our beds out of lumber and then he did some other carpentry work helping to build some Dairy Queen's and Ed's Style Shop in Portland.

Just don't stop trying. It's pretty impressive.

That life is NOT endless. I don't have forever to achieve my goals. Because that is how it seems like when you are a kid. It goes on and on and has been around for ever. You don't realize that you are born on a day and will die on a day - you just don't know when you will die and it will all be over. Your degrees, your money, your career, your family, they all will be gone in a flash. Each one of us is so insignicant in the grand scheme of things. Even famous people mean nothing. No one will remember them in 1000 years (unless they are crazy pedos like the Prophet of Arabia who continues to cause damage with his creation)

I tell myself I have another 10,000 days to live and have changed my priorities accordingly. Career no longer top of my list. I have enough finances so why kill myself like others in my age group. I spend as much time with my last kid as she navigates her last year in high school and with us. I drive her to school and pick her up, even when she says not to. We need to keep evolving. I want to travel more, buy whatever I want, do whatever I want with my remaining time left. I might just call it a day and retire. There is more to life than political managers, idiot CEOs who tank companies, fixed performance evaluations, pointless meetings, excruciating "fun" team events, annual goals that keep getting changed, constant skill updating. Enough.

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Now do OSHA standards

And consumer product safety warning labels

And decals on car batteries telling you not to drink the contents

How limited time is and how quickly it flies by.

Just a few days ago I asked my wife wth we did with our time (and our money, but that's a separate conversation) before we had kids. Now it's nonstop until they get to bed by 8pm, if we're lucky.

And just this morning, I was thinking I hope some of our friends come in for a football game this season because we haven't seen them in years. Seems like there's something every weekend. If you don't get something on the calendar and instead just say "maybe in a few weeks", it's never going to happen.
