I wonder what it would be like to live in Reno with a quarter billion dollars? Vegas is too big and too hot. Maybe I'd live in a three bedroom suite at a casino!

EDIT - Best Google reviews in Reno: https://www.peppermillreno.com/

I would invest half of it in low-risk mutual funds and then take the other half of it to my friend Asadulah, who works in securities

One all the legal stuff is taken care of:

  • Quit jobs.
  • Volunteer to fill some of the time.
  • Travel the world.
  • Buy a house in Colorado and probably Florida.
  • RV around the US.
  • Of course give to charity/church.
  • Essentially try to really enjoy life but give back in meaningful ways.
  • And I would take care of immediate family, but don't have lots of that.

I would keep my job until the official retirement date, but my tolerance for idiocy would be very low and I would be more vocal about it.

First, I don't really need to take care of any family since all the close ones have money.

Second, buy an avocado farm in California and have my mother in law run it. That way she and my wife would keep busy. This would keep her out of my hair.

Third open a Wyoming holding corporation which would start and own the following businesses...

First, hire this one friend of mine to start a space law firm and this other friend to start an infrastructure law firm. I would be funding partner and help guide the business. Both would be instantly profitable.

Second, hire this one friend of mine to start a infrastructure fund. Similar to a hedge fund but infrastructure ownership mostly in 3p projects.

Third I would hire this other friend to open an infrastructure engineering firm. Again, I would fund it and oversee but not be too involved.

Fourth, I would hire these two other engineers I know to open a nuclear oversight firm. They both work the public side of this right now and I know it is about to explode (haha) on the private side. Their ability to provide public level oversight on a private scale would be quite valuable.

I think I could turn 250mm into 1bn in 5 years max at which time I would take the holding company public and walk with 10 or 20bn. I think I could complete that entire plan in 10 years if I had 200 mm in seed money.

Same day: Reach out to Aria LV, request a $1M line of credit, skyvilla, and a private jet for that evening.
Short term: Pay off debts for certain people. Buy acreage in Montana, build compound. Buy/build villa in Mallorca.
Near term: Set up property management company, start buying property, leverage assets and accumulate mid 8-figures of property.
Long term: Ride bikes.

Go to Wal-Mart buy my an orange t-shirt with a longhorn on it. Then then I take off to see the country. When I stop for gas and somebody asks me " hey mister, what that on your shirt", that's where I'm gonna move,

Try living off of $20k per month to start with.

This way too conservative. A 4% annual withdrawal rate, which is considered to be very safe, would be $833k/month to spend. A 3% withdrawal rate, which would be considered extremely safe, would be $650k/month. Even if you only spent $500k/month, the principal would be at $286MM after 5 years if invested conservatively. I think it would be surprisingly difficult to transition to the kind of lifestyle where one suddenly spends $800k/month.

You could do it without much trouble you've just gotta get into some big ticket items.

Get a G5 and fly a lot, get some real estate that requires a lot of ongoing costs (like a ranch) and that would take a big bite out of it. Throw in starting a business or two that are really just for fun and burn cash and you can get there pretty quick.

In the immediate term I'd lay low, continue to stick around at work for a while but take a week of PTO just to let everything sink in and deal with attorneys and financial panther planners. No big changes other than sending my F-100 off so that someone else can deal with restoring it, and paying someone to do some landscaping which is the other big chore that I hate. Anonymous check to the church so we can get more done with that 100 year old building we're in.

Longer term, figure out a way to spend more time with mom and dad since they're in their mid-70s and I know they won't be around forever. Not sure if I'd be the one who does it, but projects around the house would be done. I'd probably continue going in to work for a long time since I accrue PTO quick and it gives a sort of purpose and rhythm to the week. I'd be afraid that if I quit and led a life of screwing around I'd lose focus and drive.

Read this thread a few times: https://www.ar15.com/forums/general/Austrian_s_Semi_Annual_Guide_For_Recent_Lottery_Winners__Or_Deluded_Hopefuls__Post/5-828009/

Once all the legal side is out of the way, and I have the cash:

- Put in notice at my job. 2-4 weeks. Tell them I'm going out on my own.
- Either one time gift or some type of trust to immediate family and select friends ($5mil-ish. These people are already reasonably successful and should be able to handle this). NDAs required.
- New vehicles for me and the wife (F250 and Expedition, nothing crazy).
- Purchase a few thousand acres around Aggieland or somewhere in the hill country. Maybe even just start buying up chunks along the current road we live on. Build a very high-end but reasonably sized house. Large barn/shop. New Cat/JD equipment for developing it. Build a large gun range. Hire a few select people (could even be family) to manage property, wildlife, and cattle operation.
- Offer homesites to immediate family for permanent relocation or part-time use.
- Hire a chef and personal trainer and focus on enjoying great food and personal health and fitness.
- Invest the remaining $150mil in a way that would safely provide for my family for perpetuity.

Beyond this, I would try to maintain as "normal" of a life as possible for us and our young children. Maybe quarterly vacations to the beach/mountains. Basically just try to spend as much time as possible with family and give to the community anonymously.

This place would fit the bill: https://www.land.com/property/3304-acres-in-lampasas-county-texas/16313533/

I'd obviously quit my job/retire.

I plan on moving to Scotland in about 4-5 years and I would just bump that down to 1-2 years.
College fund for my nieces and nephew.
I'd travel more for sure but I'm not sure if I'd keep a place in the US.

I think most everything else would stay the same.

I don't have any debt, and can handle all my expenses. It will make it easier I guess. I have enough money to pay my kids college and my travel, so I don't need 250M for that. I personally have a lot of BAS with respect to money because of some experiences. 250M is good to shed that and not be selfish.

I have been lucky in many ways so I want to help people. Not by making splashy donations to institutions or having buildings named after me. No.
When I hear of someone needing expensive surgery for their mom and cannot afford, I will pay 100% of surgery costs. If someone who lost their job and has to sleep in their car, I will pay their rent for a year. Things like that.
I want to help such people. $250M will make much easier. I want my help to go to real people, not "to research" or something like that which is usually misused by professors. Making a difference which touches everyday people directly.
