Dear Abby,

I keep the temperature set at 74. So during the summer it is set at 74 and at winter it is set at 74.

Here comes the weird part. I can get out of the shower and be perfectly comfortable during the summer but freeze during the winter. How is this possible? The 74 inside is a constant.

Your thermostat isnt in the bathroom. Your bathroom has exterior walls. Your bathroom is colder than the rest of your house in the winter due to less cycling of air flow. In the summer your A/C runs more frequently moving the air around.

Do you have a high/low thermostat? Where it kicks the heat on if it drops below X temp and the AC on if it goes above y temp? If not and you are just setting your AC to cool to 74, then it feels colder in the winter because it IS colder. If your AC never kicks on or only does so infrequently to circulate air because the outside temp is below 74, then the temp in your bathroom is going to drop well below 74.

Great question. I could wake from a 10 year coma in a temerature controlled, insulated, windowless bunker environment, jump in and out of the shower, and tell you with 95% accuracy what month it is. Defies logic.

DUUUUUUUDE, I co-sign this question. I've been saying the same thing about the summer to winter variance inside despite the temp being set at the same thing! I DONT GET IT

My couch is right next to the thermostat in our house and I experience this same thing, I don't get it.

as you sit on the couch, eating bonbons, and watching soaps your resting heart rate drops. Because of this you feel colder. Your thermostat is also likely above your head. The colder more dense air is settling around your bosom creating an invisible boundary layer below the thermo so the heat doesn't kick on.

Or you just could have said you live in a cheap house with drafts and inadequate AC/heating flow.

You have a couch in your hall?!? I've never seen a thermostat that wasn't in the hall.

What do you look at while you're sitting on that couch?

My room is in the corner with windows on two sides. It was a few degrees warmer than the hall thermostat last summer. It's stayed warm so far this fall, but we've only had one freeze so far. I'll be interested to see what it feels like in here when it's 5F outside.

Having windows on two sides is AWESOME when they're open, BTW.

A/C set to 74F in the summer and heat to 72F this fall.

The air might be 74 degrees in both cases, but the humidity can be different. And getting out of the shower soaking wet, dry air will cool you much faster as the water evaporates off your skin. Also the floor, ceiling, and exterior walls may be significantly warmer or cooler than the air inside the house, especially if your air temperature setpoint changes throughout the day. And all the objects in your house can also be much warmer or cooler if the air temp setpoint changes.

Radiant heat. It's why the upper parts of your car roof might have frost in it at night While the sides of the car won't. The top of your car is faced toward deep space and in the winter you've got ice cold windows.

I just flip on the infrared and heated tile floors a few minutes before I shower in the winter. Never feels cold when I get out of the shower

This confuses me as much as the thermos.

It keeps the hot stuff hot and the cold stuff cold.

How do it know?

Those things along with adult diapers would allow me to watch the entire Super Bowl and all the commercials without getting up.

That joke is more predicated on the hope that plenty of others here don't know what one looks like
