My grand niece has to prepare one to get into the program for the spring in Pflugerville. Wow…..I guess some kids and parents take their academic careers seriously. I figured their grades and teacher recommendations would be enough.

We've had to do what I feel is a lot to get and keep our kids in their ALPs. Surveys, lots of them and us answering questions about goals in and out of school and what they'll do to accomplish them, identifying strengths and weaknesses, etc.

I suppose it separates the herd a bit. They are currently in 4th/5th grade, and we started this when each was in 2nd, for math.

That's crazy. Middle child had to take some tests, during school, and he was 1 of 4 that got into it as a 1st grader.

Glad I didn't have those hoops to jump through.

Sending children to public schools is a bad idea.

I didn't realize Georgia Tech opened a satellite campus in Pflugerville, but if they are going to let a second grader in, I'd definitely expect them to require a portfolio and some test scores

Times are changing, apparently. When my daughter initially got into GT in kindergarten, her teachers handled most of it internally, we just had to submit a short application.

She's in 6th grade this year. We made the decision to switch from charter to private when she finished elementary and the extent of the application process for our top 3 choices was shocking to me. Between essays (from her and from us), testing, interviews, questionnaires, recommendations, portfolio submissions, and trial days, it took up an enormous amount of time.

Yes. Both are 100% true.

2nd grader and not already in GT? Good luck getting her into beauty college. Maybe she can be the hair-washing girl.

As a former CTE teacher at a medium sized 3A school, our school required one of us to go to the incoming freshman orientation to preach about the advantages of enrolling in our classes.

Most parents whose student were already showing animals were shocked to learn they had to choose between taking CTE classes and GT/AP/Dual credit classes.

I explained to them the only way around that choice was to begin taking the GT/AP classes in their 8th grade year. This also meant they had to take the correct advanced level class in 7th grade to even be considered for the 8th grade class.

So basically, if a student wanted to be adequately prepared to be accepted to a major university, the had to begin taking the correct classes by the time they were in 7th grade(if they wanted to take any CTE courses as well). So basically the decision needed to be made at the end of their 6th grade year as to whether they were going to a major university or whether they were going to take CTE courses. Quite the decision for a ~12 year old or their parents.

I guess it has migrated all the way down to the 2nd grade now. Guess we are getting more and more like China everyday - where a person's career is decided for them at a very young age.

I just look at this as a way to get ahead in math, and hopefully prolong the interest in the subject in order to parlay that interest into a career that can be lucrative, since, you know, math and stuff.

Don't you know? No school at all is better than public school.

This was not a thing when I was in HS. I went to a small town 4A and you could do both as long as you had the grades. I did AP just about everything, dual credit, and found time for welding and machining classes

They thought I had a learning disability. Turns out I was bored out of my mind because I was reading Watership Downs at home while they were teaching my peers their letters and numbers. Finally they gave me a child IQ test and realized the problem was a serous misalignment between me and the material.

Don't they just IQ test everyone in 1st or 2nd grade like they used to?

yes, tests are still used for placement, and they stay on top of it now by putting kids that are excelling in ALPs.

When I was a kid, my family moved from Seoul, Korea (where I attended an American DoD school) to Slidell, LA. The school in Slidell put me in the low-level classes because, quote, "he came from Korea". After the first quarter, I was moved to their version of honors classes.

The problem is that when you're living in a suburb, EVERY PARENT thinks their kid is special. When the tests show them that their kid is just average, parents get but hurt.
