I just turned 69 and I will work until the end of 2026. If you can wait until you're 70, you get the full social security benefit which can be substantial.

I will be 70 in 2049. I won't see a dime of SS. I expect to have my investments accounts and savings taxed to the point there will be nothing to retire on.

At the moment I don't find the concept appealing.

The nature of what I'm doing will keep shifting over time but I don't aspire to stop working.

No way I would work until I'm 70 unless things drastically change and I'm forced to. Hubs is 8 years older than me. I want to enjoy retirement with him.

I could retire right now at 50, but like what I do and have a purpose. I can save a substantial amount in the next 10 years which would make retirement a hell of a lot better. Retirement at an early age without plenty of fun coupons would get really boring really quickly

I'll retire in 1.5 years when I turn 65.

I could punch now, but my wife will work for another decade and I don't want to be the househusband quite that long.

You're not going to "retire"…. You'll sell yourself out as a "consultant " and bank some serious coin.

You will also reduce the percentage of the "youth" of your retirement years (you'll never get that back) you get to enjoy. That is immensely more important than maximizing SS benefit in my opinion.

My boss told me he's going to retire in 3 years. I believe he will around 55.

Got me thinking....How many years do you plan on working before you retire? I'm thinking 29-30 years..?

I retired at 66 … about 14 months before the 66 years, 8 month Social Security retirement age to obtain 100% of my benefits. I was required to resign (even though I loved working every day) in order to obtain my visa, so I receive 93.3% of my benefits.

I pay $1,800 for "the king's [best possible] insurance," private insurance with full coverage, no deductibles, and no co-pays, with the exception of prescriptions (which I do not require). My husband has had one surgery here, and the bill was $0.

No regrets relating to my benefits. Loving life abroad despite the massive learning curve and adjustment involved.

I'll probably retire around 70 because although I have a lot saved up already (started when I was 25 + 2 pensions), I have no idea what things will cost later on in life.

Also because airplanes are cool.

All depends. Work has been soul killing for about 5 years now. I want to get 30 years in. The number is just a number but I hope to have enough to do whatever I want to do by then (within reason). I can retire now, but would make me nervous. I have a new boss now that I have hope for, but losing it little by little. They will be hiring a guy to assist him and should announce that in mid January. If it is who I think it is going to be, I very well could retire in May. Daughter will be done with school in May of next year. That will be a $50,000 a year pay increase for me.

It wasn't that long ago I thought I would retire in my 60s. The whole menatilty of my company has changed. Now, I just want to get out. It would cost me a lot of money if I retire before 59.5, but if things don't change, it will be well worth it.

Well, if the market is there. Aerospace is kinda light in the DFW area right now or else I'd have already done it.

I'm 53 and have no plans for retirement other than knowing where I want to move to when I retire. At least the general area.

Retire? I'm going to be torn apart by a pack of wild dogs while being chased through a snowy forest by rich men* hunting me for sport. Like my father before me and his father before him.

*In a happy ending, the rich men will also be torn apart by the same wild dogs.

I plan to retire at the start of 2027, just before I turn 50. My wife plans to work at least 5 years longer than me even though I showed her she didn't need to. She gets more satisfaction out of working than I do… I think.

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer
And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone
Dragged down by the stone (stone, stone, stone, stone, stone)
I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone

I might retire in a year - 65/66 age. Right now I'm getting paid a very good salary and provided with great health care to come to the office two days a week. Allows me to play a round or two of golf during the week, plus I have over 40 days of vacation. Its sort of hard to give up the salary when this job is so easy right now.

I'm in a similar situation. Turn 65 next month. Am paid a crazy good salary with outstanding benefits, four weeks vacation and work with great people. No late nights, no weekends, no travel. I'd be stupid to walk away now.

Got me thinking....How many years do you plan on working before you retire? I'm thinking 29-30 years..?

I started planning my retirement when I was 17 when I opened up my IRA account. My wife retired at 62 in July of 2023 and I retired at 58 in Oct of 2023. Loving it because now can travel where & when we want.

suggestion you make sure you work on reducing expenses & paying everything off before retirement.

Or... Do all the fun stuff when you're in your 20s, 30s, 40s... while you still have the energy and verve.

Nothing worse than an old man with bad knees and the Great Wall of China is in front of him (Not including his old wife who has a hip ready to snap). Yeah (in Lumbergh voice)... that doesn't sound like too much fun.

Your last sentence remains true.

I'm a little older than you. I was in a very similar situation and my employer even let me move to my chosen retirement location and continue to work as long as I wanted. I continued to work for 15 months until 67. I retired 17 months ago. What I've learned is we have 3 things in retirement - money, time and health. Money will not buy any of the other two. IMO trading any of the time I have left was a price I wasn't willing to pay. I'm not willing to sacrifice the youth of my retirement years for money. I disagree with your last sentence based on experience.

So using your logic, if I retire next year when I'm 66 I will have made a better decision than you? It's not all about chasing the almighty dollar. I've been beyond blessed in my life and am very grateful. Everyone's situation is unique and I'll leave it at that.

You do what you think best. I live in a community with 6,000 retirees. I know some that have had failed health and run out of time. I've not heard one say they wish they had another dollar or wish they'd worked another day. Just my opinion and observation living in this community. It definitely changed my planning horizon. I had planned on working longer but my priority changed.

Yes, being healthy is key to being able to travel. After the ND game we went on a cruise to Canada out of Boston and man all the people with mobility issues shocked both of us. We made a pledge to do what we can do to stave off Father Time & stay mobile. We also have a plan to travel to places that might be difficult as we get older. So South America & Africa are up next couple of years. Stay healthy and enjoy retirement.

My daily preach:

Start investing. NOW. Every minute you waste is a dollar lost. America is moving to an "invester-first" economy so you don't want to be left out.
You don't want to struggle when you are in your 60s and onward when it is hard to get a job or you don't want to get a job or you are not able to get a job.
My kids are 21 and 17 and I have started investing for them already.

You can throw stones at me later, but do this NOW.

It is not hard to make a big sum grow a little and it be a lot. It is really hard to make a small sum grow a lot to make a lot. Compounding early is the key to this.

That is amazing.

These days one is forced to do 2 employers in 2 years because of constant layoffs, reorgs, acquisitions etc.
