In 2025, many celebrities have died. But not all! There are still some left!

This is the annual tasteless tradition in which the General Board competes to identify celebrities who will be cashing in their chips in 2026.

I will be tabulating the results of last year's contest this weekend and announcing the official winners on New Year's Day.

But now to the business at hand--the launch of the 2026 Death Watch! You have until 11:59 PM CST on the Epiphany of the Lord (Tuesday, January 6) to submit your picks for official entry to this year's contest.

This year's rules: changes from last year are in bold.

Rules:
1) One entry per contestant
2) Each entry consists of five picks; if you list more than five celebrities, only the first 5 listed count.
3) If you mistakenly pick a celebrity who has already died, you will be mocked mercilessly by the board. Particularly if your pick died during the Carter administration. However, you may edit your pick up until the time that the contest entry closes. You are not required to do so, but of course will receive no points for that pick.
4) However, if you pick a celebrity who dies in 2025 after your pick is submitted, you may not change your selection. That's just a bad beat, and it serves you right for cheesing the contest by picking on poor Bruce Willis.
5) To be eligible for prizes, picks must be submitted by 11:59 CST on Tuesday, January 6
6) As above, entries may be submitted until the Tuesday after New Year's. However, you may not pick a celebrity who dies or is newly diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness on or after midnight, New Year's Eve.
7) More than one person may pick the same celebrity, however, see eligibility for prizes below.

Prizes:
8) The Black Crow award will be given to the contestant who is the first to select a celebrity who gets dead after midnight on New Year's Day (local time at place of death)
9) The Grim Reaper award will be given to the the first contestant who picks the last celebrity to kick the bucket prior to midnight on New Year's Eve 2026
10) For the most prestigious prize, the Angel of Death, points will be awarded as follows: 10 points for first dead pick, 20 points for second dead pick, 40 points for 3rd dead pick, 80 points for 4th dead pick, and 160 points + an additional 40 bonus points if all five of your picks croak in 2026!!!
11) Exception: celebrities over the age of 90 at the time of death will not score escalating bonuses: base 10 points will be awarded regardless of whether the celebrity is your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th dead pick. However, these still count toward your total number of dead picks for calculating subsequent bonuses (see example below).
12) For celebrities under the age of 90, an additional bonus of points equal to (90-celebrity's age on date of death) will also be awarded. No additional points for celebrities over 90; negative points are not awarded.
13) In the event of a tie for the Angel of Death, the first contestant to enter the contest wins.
14) The date of a celebrity's death is determined by the local authorities in the jurisdiction where the death occurred, as listed on the official death certificate. If an unfortunate celebrity dies late in 2026 and is not discovered to have assumed room temperature until later in 2027, prizes may be redistributed accordingly.
15) All picks are for entertainment purposes only
16) Although it is not technically against the rules to pray to the Baby Jesus to smite your chosen celebrities, it is in exceedingly poor taste and possibly a mortal sin. Don't do this.
17) As always, you will receive no points and suffer immediate disqualification if you murder any of your picks, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Scoring example:

ranger65 enters the contest and picks:
Bruce Willis
Dick Van Dyke
Joe Biden
Bob Dylan
Mary-Kate Olsen

1. In February, Bruce dies at the age of 70. ranger65 gets 10 points for his first dead pick, plus (90-70) 20 points for the age bonus. His score is now 30 points.

2. In May, DVD dies at the age of 100. ranger65 gets 10 points for a correct pick, but does not get bonus points for his 2nd dead pick and does not score an age bonus. His score is now 40 points.

3. In September, Bob Dylan goes blowin in the wind at the age of 85. As this is his third dead pick, ranger65 gets 40 points, plus a 5 point age bonus (90-85). His total score is now 85 points.

What do you mean? I thought those five choices were logical and fit the parameters spelled out in OP pretty well.

Dick Van Dyke successfully reached 100 earlier this month. Shouldn't successfully picking a 100+ year old to die result in zero points?

#5 Turns 80 this year (2026) and is obese. Not to mention someone has already tried to shoot him. It's interesting you take offense within the GB's most offensive thread. It's tasteful to predict human beings whose lives will soon end until it's a politician that you support?

Has zero to do with the politician. But hey, great job jumping to conclusions.

I'm wondering why anyone would put out to the universe that Dolly Parton or Morgan Freeman might die.

You should have powered thru your waffle earlier. Maybe you would be a little less beachy.

I am sorry that I rocked your boat in this morbid contest. I did not see where we could not select beloved icons that might upset some people. I could not tell from your original post if you were upset with my selection of a few pancreatic cancer victims, a politician that is hated by the fringes of society that have demonstrated a willingness to kill, an aging retired actor or a beloved icon. I even thought you might have taken my comment about Bruce Willis as offensive, and that is why I asked what bothered you about my selection.

The funny thing is that in this morbid contest, I almost didn't put Dolly or Mr Freeman. A disgraced former heisman winner and a former Aggie coach were there, but I chose to keep my picks less controversial. Who knew?

Picking a pancreatic cancer patient and a stage 3 colorectal cancer patient seems cheap and easy. As is picking a dementia patient who has been moved to 24 hour care.

So now you have a problem with four out of my five picks? The only one you don't object to is Trump? If my list is so bothersome, maybe don't click on this thread. By the way, Bruce Willis wasn't on 24 hour care when I picked him for my list last year, and I left him off this year for that reason.

I have reached my 2.5 post/day maximum and it isn't even 7:30 yet. Produce your picks, or move on from mine.

Key Timeline and Updates
In May 2025, Adams publicly announced on his "Real Coffee with Scott Adams" show that he had metastatic prostate cancer (the same type former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with). He described it as terminal, with a prognosis of months to liveexpecting to "check out" by summer 2025and discussed options like California's End of Life Option Act due to severe pain.
There was a brief period of hope in mid-2025 when testosterone blockers unexpectedly reduced his pain and PSA levels dramatically, extending his outlook from weeks/months to potentially longer.
By November/December 2025, his health declined sharply again. He sought (and received some assistance from President Trump and associates) access to the targeted drug Pluvicto, but faced delays.
In mid-December 2025, he was hospitalized (at Kaiser in California) with complications including

Had no idea about Scott Adams. Haven't heard anything on him since he said something that got a bunch of people upset and got canceled or whatever they did.

That's crummy. Prostate cancer is one of those that is really treatable early but later stage is difficult.

You are really taking this seriously. It's ok. It's just an internet message board thread where people surmise which celebrities might die in 2026.

Trump is in his late 70's and may or may not be in good health. No idea. For this contest, he's not a bad pick based on the expected lifespan of an American male. Unlikely, since few presidents have died in office, but not a bad pick. Politics have nothing to do with it for me.

I want Freeman and Parton to live forever because they have been so entertaining to so many people.

And I think picking people that we know are seriously ill is just cheap. It's like betting a batter will strike out when he is 0-2 in the count and bats 0.187.

It's ok if you don't agree. Really. To me, this contest shouldn't include people over 90 years old or that have had a serious health diagnosis.

Had someone last year picked the Call of Duty guy that just died in the Ferrari crash, that would be a big surprise. Not Dick Van Dyke or Bruce Willis.

1) The Death Watch is a game of skill, not luck. If the contest was limited to young, healthy people we could go a whole year with one or two deaths.

2) Per Social Security actuarial tables, a 90 year old has a 17% chance of death in the coming year. Even a 100 year old (like Dick van Dyke) has a 61% chance of surviving another year! It's not an easy lay-up. Plenty of people chose DVD last year, and presuming he hangs on another 5 days, those tickets are going to come up losers.

3) Banning the selection of the obviously terminally ill is something I considered, but who defines that? I picked two cancer patients last year, both of whom are still living and don't even look sick.

The solution to the 90 year old problem is easy. Pick a 90-year-old and if they make it through the year, negative points.
