She has a pretty great story. Retired at 16 after the 2022 Olympics because it just wasn't fun for her anymore. Didn't compete for over 2 and a half years, started experiencing life outside of skating. Within a year from coming back she was world champion, now gold medalist. She skated with such joy, it was so fun to watch

On another note, I couldn't believe this was the first medal for an American woman in 20 years and first gold in 22 years?

So corporations can get their products made cheaply in China. Consumers can buy cheap products from China. But you hate a young girl for accepting 20 million dollars from China to ski? She'd be dumbass to turn it down.

Damn Canada gets one back

The US' favorite to win the men's ski halfpipe crashed on the last jump. Had to be helped off the course. Announcer saying if he had landed that one it would have been a gold medal. Will finish in fourth place instead.

And a different US guy wins the gold instead.

A Belgium speed skater took a blade to the face yesterday in the women's 1500. She was involved in a crash with two other skaters. They actually stopped the race which apparently only happens when someone doesn't get up.

The edge/end of the American's skate caught her on the cheek just below the eye. Had it not been for her protective glasses it would have been a direct hit to her eye. Lucky it was a just a small cut to her cheek but it still bled pretty good onto the ice which had to be scraped and cleaned. The American was DQed for causing the crash.

Earlier during that same session a different Belgian skater tried a wild strategy and took off on a sprint after the first of 13 laps. She ended up lapping the pack and stuck with them until the last two laps. The rest of the group took off but we're unable to catch her in time. Wild stuff that I don't think has ever worked in this length before.

Also I think the U.S. team got hosed in the mixed Skimo relay. going into the last transition for the women, Spain's competitor stopped well beyond the edge of the last transition zone. It wasn't a pole or part of a ski past the line, she was fully 10 feet into the next section. Spain placed third but was only give a 3 second penalty instead of a 30 second or full DQ. 3 second penalties are typically reserved for minor in fractions like not having your skins completely stowed away. The U.S. filed a protest but it was denied and they placed 4th while Spain kept the bronze.


Also if you haven't watched Skimo AKA Ski Mountaineering, you really need to watch the replays. It is absolutely insane. They basically sprint up on skis, remove their skis and strap them to their back, run up a huge flight of steps, put the skis back on and ski uphill some more, and then ski all the way back down the mountain.


The sprint race includes a section where they have to move around diamond shapes and has an elevation gain of 230ft.

The Mixed Relay has the same sprint course with an additional longer climb and descent section (460ft elevation) and each man/woman pair has to complete two alternating laps.

I don't know, figure skating gold medalist Alysa Liu refused to sell out to communist China (even after being followed and harassed by Chinese agents), as her father was forced to flee that country as a political dissident. Her loss-Pooh Bear would probably have gone double the price he paid some X Games star for.a figure skating champion. She must be a real dumbass!

Brings to mind an apocryphal story variously attributed to Winston Churchill, and others. Churchill asked a British matron if she would go to bed with him for 5 million pounds. She said that she would certainly consider it. He then asked her if she would accept 10 quid for sechs. "Of course not!", she says, indignant. "What kind of woman do you think I am?"

I thought all the stuff with Johnny Gaudreau was really poignant, how they made him a jersey and had it with them in the games, but when they brought his kids out to be in the gold medal photo…I'm not ashamed to admit I shed a couple of tears.
