Howdy Ags,

yes I know change is gonna happen; but can it slow down a tick?

I went up to God's country yesterday, as I try to at least once every February, did some walkin round, reminiscing of my happy place. Its been 32 years since I first stepped on campus at Texas A&M. Every year, there is a new building being built in the tiniest of space allowed. There was a time when Northgate stopped the expansion, but those days are long gone. Church street is covered in shadow and orange construction signs. Some how the Fitzwilly's building is still up?? Old Ags will swear the dirt/mud parking lot was better than the paved northgate pay for park lot...I will agree. I fear Northgate will flirt with the idea to disappear, when the University strip becomes prime real estate for another parking garage. I cannot imagine the Chicken/DD/Freebirds/Dry Bean would ever leave, as that strip is a staple for many Aggies. Freebirds needs a re-tool though as lots of that joint has not changed for the better...What happened to the root beer? I digress, just hate seeing places I loved leave..

A&M isn't going to expand to northgate when they tons of available land on West Campus, Riverside, and the research fields farther west that they already own. As far as bars and restaurants getting bought out, supply and demand will control development as much as the city will allow.

They put benches in the hallway of Harrington. New Army doesn't have to sit on the floor like we did.

How nice. I'll bet each bench has some kind of "charging" station near bye..How did we ever make it??

It is not the A&M expansion that will change Northgate. It is the economic pressure that drives redevelopment. I visited Michigan State this weekend. Their "Northgate" is a along Grand River Avenue. As their campus has grown, this area has continually redeveloped. They still have restaurants and bars, but it also has two or more parking garages, a CVS, and a Target. After watching A&M for the last 40 years, I could definitely see this happening to our Northgate

I love talking about how Texas A&M and College Station were back in the day (early 90s for me). Let's do this.

Sneaky Pete still has a website, although it looks like it was created in the late 90s and left alone. He was still performing as late as 2025 in the area. I only saw him a few times at the Flying Tomato back in '90-'91. I wasn't totally sold on him as an entertainer. I liked that he played "Snoopy and the Red Baron", and I had the feeling he either was an Aggie legend or would become an Aggie legend. Not sure if that actually happened, but I think Robert Earl Keen stole his thunder.

I'm still dissappointed that Beef 'n Brew on the south side of campus didn't make it. Billy Boy played there regularly for a while. He was a townie / biker who was crazy, mean, drunk, and in and out of jail a lot. But he was entertaining, and the place served minors with absolutely no questions asked. Decent burgers, too.

I remember when the original Koppe Bridge was a temporary building in '94-'95. Glad that place made it.

I never worked at the Chicken, per se, but I did get to see the entire building, including the upstairs office. I got the opportunity to serve the community for 20 hours thanks to a special meeting in that upstairs office.

I used to enjoy seeing Sneaky Pete at the Cow Hop and being able to get up on stage and use the sing-a-long microphone.

My opinion of him changed a little bit when a girl and I went to Carney's (is that still around?) for lunch one day and there obviously weren't many people in the bar since it was early afternoon but I did see Pete at a table eating lunch with a young girl whom I presumed was his daughter (she was 6-8 years old). At one point the bartender brought a pitcher of beer to his table and said "this is the last one Pete" and I was instantly shocked and wondered if since that was the "last" one, how many others had there been? We were there when he and the kid left and I was very happy to see that they got into a car that someone else was driving.

Who remembers Fatburger and the record store next to it?

Joe King Carrasco did an in store signing there once, probably around '84 or so.
