Marooned Records was the best record shop. Think he closed it to go be tour manager for Tripping Daisy, if I recall.

Joe King Carrasco did an in store signing there once, probably around '84 or so.

That was a great record store.

Found a picture of Fat Burger online, surprisingly. Mention of Music Express, which was to the left but in the same standalone building.

Fitzwilly's for a burger and beer, rooftop at The Corner for some fresh air, Dry Bean for shots, O'Bannons to talk and sip beer. Antonio's for a slice when the bars closed. Those were my go tos. And not North Gate, but $2 pint night at Fox and Hound was great for trying new beers with their big wall of taps.

If this recipe works, I'm going to feel like Indiana Jones was just handed the map to the fountain of youth. I remember that salsa as well as if I had a bowl in front of me right now. Soupy, warm, whole tomato parts, not really spicy at all.... almost like a soup. To me, it was Bryan, Texas in food form.

The guy who owns that blog is a contemporary of mine. He ate there often enough he got to know Patsy fairly well and got an item with his name put on the menu. I haven't tried the recipe, but knowing him it is probably pretty close.

Put in a couple of late night Fat Burger orders BITD.

I assume the Harrington wind tunnel is still in effect. Made the mistake of walking through there once when it was raining. Got soaked even though I had an umbrella.

Howdy Ags,

yes I know change is gonna happen; but can it slow down a tick?

I went up to God's country yesterday, as I try to at least once every February, did some walkin round, reminiscing of my happy place. Its been 32 years since I first stepped on campus at Texas A&M. Every year, there is a new building being built in the tiniest of space allowed. There was a time when Northgate stopped the expansion, but those days are long gone. Church street is covered in shadow and orange construction signs. Some how the Fitzwilly's building is still up?? Old Ags will swear the dirt/mud parking lot was better than the paved northgate pay for park lot...I will agree. I fear Northgate will flirt with the idea to disappear, when the University strip becomes prime real estate for another parking garage. I cannot imagine the Chicken/DD/Freebirds/Dry Bean would ever leave, as that strip is a staple for many Aggies. Freebirds needs a re-tool though as lots of that joint has not changed for the better...What happened to the root beer? I digress, just hate seeing places I loved leave..

Cowpie and fries for under $2 back in my day. We didn't even have the $ for cheese and a coke.

Had to save that seventy cents for a Lone Star at the Chicken.

Good times.

Los Nortinos

Start a 3-qt saucepan over low heat. When it's hot, add a couple tablespoons of olive oil. When the oil shimmers, add two ripe, whole tomatoes and roll them around until the skin is seared and loosening; then cut them in half with the business end of an outdoor grill spatula. As the tomatoes get more and more tender, continue to chop them in halves and halves, add 3 cloves of minced fresh garlic, two diced fresh jalapenos, and a very coarsely chopped yellow onion. Increase heat and saute. Add a 15-oz can of tomato sauce, half a can of water, a handful of finely chopped fresh cilantro, and two dried bay leaves. Stir well. Add water by the tablespoon as the salsa cooks to keep the liquid reasonably thin. The vegetables should soften long enough that the onions' sharp flavor is rounded off, and the tomatoes should become part of the liquid. When the salsa is nearly ready to serve, stir in a little bit of ground cumin (a couple of shakes only; cumin can take over, and we don't want that) and a teaspoon of salt. If you're browning any beef or pork on another burner, stir in a tablespoon of melted animal fat or olive oil to finish, stir well, and serve with large tortilla chips. Keep hot in a Crock Pot for parties and serve with a big ladle.

A&M isn't going to expand to northgate when they tons of available land on West Campus, Riverside, and the research fields farther west that they already own. As far as bars and restaurants getting bought out, supply and demand will control development as much as the city will allow.

It is not the A&M expansion that will change Northgate. It is the economic pressure that drives redevelopment. I visited Michigan State this weekend. Their "Northgate" is a along Grand River Avenue. As their campus has grown, this area has continually redeveloped. They still have restaurants and bars, but it also has two or more parking garages, a CVS, and a Target. After watching A&M for the last 40 years, I could definitely see this happening to our Northgate

I'm a fan of East Lansing. Lots of good folks in that town.

I loved Sneaky Pete. I had heard that he had passed away, and I am so glad that wasn't true.

Went every Wednesday when he was at Northgate Cafe. I only went a time or two when he was at the Flying Tomato.
