Buying as a gift for my wife, who is an amateur astronomer. $300 +/- Easy to use. Any suggestions?

You need a good stand and mount, also. If the telescope is phenomenal but the mount sucks, you won't be able to focus on anything. You'll constantly be losing your picture after spending way too much time trying to find an object.

I'm no astronomer but $300 sounds cheap. Might as well just get a nice pair of binoculars.

I know an amateur astronomer. He makes his own telescopes and I'm pretty sure he spends damn near $1000 on them.

Do you happen to live near a major city?

In case you do (or for anyone else who may be curious about telescopes), I would recommend searching out a local Astronomy Club/Astronomical Society. They will have access to good dark sites and telescopes that sometimes reach 5 figures. They would also have the best recommendations on what to use for personal use, and some members may have old telescopes they would be willing to sell to new members for cheap.

Happy stargazing!

I'm a huge fan of a SeeStar S50. It's not a visual telescope, it's a dedicated astrophotography scope. It does like stacking of short exposures and auto tracks. You can see it autostacknin the app live on your phone or iPad. So you get long exposure pics and can "see" the deep sky object at are same time, but because it's a long exposure you see it like you can't with your eye.

Most deep sky objects are just smudges live. Here, you resolve colors and details.

It's $550 and optimized for deep sky objects. The third is the Orion Nebula. The 4th is good old Andromeda. The last is the Eye of Sauron.

Here are a couple I have taken, some from my back yard.
