Heard them say the payback's double-fold
Just can't seem to remember who I bought and sold
I'll probably still be here when you come around next year
Trying to climb from this deep dark hole

A beautiful, sunny summer day in west Georgia/east Alabama. Slept until about 0826 hours. I awoke hungry and ready for coffee.
Because a good day starts with good coffee.
Make it a good one in spite of what the rest of humankind and cryptocurrencies are up to.

No college baseball today. Regionals start tomorrow (BTHO Lamar!). No Cardinals game today. No Royals game today. I need baseball! Will likely watch the AA Springfield Cardinals this evening. I'm on-call for work today and have my fingers crossed that it's uneventful. I get stressed out when I'm on-call, so it's nice to have a ballgame on to help pass the time... except for today.

I think that spring is over. 85F yesterday and humid, and the forecast is nothing but warm and humid. Average high reached 80F today. The nice thing about Missouri is that it's only unpleasant for about three months before it starts cooling off again.

Working on my itinerary for taking Benny to Oregon and Washington. Tanya and I used to go a couple of times a year before he was born, but he's never been. Planning to see:

1) Cumbres and Toltec Railroad in Chama, NM (Benny has done this twice as a toddler. He has no memories of it, so I want to do it again.)
2) Crater Lake National Park (unknown/uncrowded/stunningly beautiful).
3) Bandon, OR (on the Pacific Coast, this is a very charming little town of 3,600).
4) Yachats, OR (also on the coast... 100 miles north of Bandon. David Ogden Stiers had a house in Yachats).
5) McKenzie Bridge, OR (in the foothills of the Cascades. This part of OR is empty and underrated).
6) Mount Saint Helens - Who doesn't want to see a blast zone?!? I haven't been here since 2002, and I'm really curious to see if I can tell that there's more plant life.

Planning on doing a lot of driving. Common sense would tell me to rent a car, but I want to make memories with Benny, and I want those memories to be in our car, not a rental. I love driving out West and having the highways to myself.

Love Chama, NM…went there as a kid with my grandparents and back again as an adult.

That's a long stretch between South Ogden, UT and Grand Island, NE. We used to drive US 40 from Salt Lake to Denver via Steamboat Springs. I-70 to US 50 further south is also a great drive. WE have also that long stretch of I-80 through Wyoming to North Platte, another good stopping spot. I love driving the interior western US and even southern California is not bad with a hybrid.

I've only driven Nebraska once. Tanya, Benny, and I did it summer 2012. Something special about Nebraska. I found it much more desolate/unattractive than either Kansas or South Dakota (SD is actually an attractive state). I don't want to drive Nebraska twice, which is part of the reason we're going to New Mexico on the way over.

I also don't want to go through Colorado's Front Range (or touch Denver Metro), which is why I'm willing to drive Nebraska once.

Benny has a pretty good group of friends. I'm sure one of them can feed the kitties. Poor Lucy is terrified of strangers and will hide. Callie has never met a stranger, and will beg for attention until the person gets tired of scratching her and leaves.

When we went to Texas after Tanya's death, we were gone for three days, and the cats clung onto me for nearly a week when we got back. I can't image what they'd be like after two weeks without us.

I'm not locking anything in until our land in Hardin County is sold, and this trip is funded. Hoping that happens by the end of next month.

And maybe Uncle Mark?!? If Uncle Mark is in town, I need to consider. I'll record us chatting on my cell phone and share with the group.

Definitely Uncle Mark. We need to know he is real.

He's got fans here.

This is a webcam at the hotel where I want to stay in Yachats, OR. It's difficult to appreciate this until you seen people on those rocks and can see how tiny they look. During winter storms, waves will hit these rocks and crash 50' or 100' into the air.

some great memories on trips like this

what are some of the things besides Oregon you are wanting to see with this trip

Reason i ask is I just made a similar long trip to the west and gas prices are very high right now but still worthy of seeing things

plus i am curious to things people see and do on these trips

Strongly encourage Utah and NP
reminder Crater Lake has some closures

Have a great trip

I'll call myself out. I looked at the itinerary and couldn't figure out why you would go to New England on the way from Utah to Missouri.

1) Nebraska exists
2) New England is not a state

Not my brightest moment.

I'm dying to show Benny this observatory in the Oregon Cascades. Not too many people realize Oregon has lava fields.
https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/destination/dee-wright-observatory

But I don't remember how much hiking is involved. I had knee surgery 15 days ago. I also want to hike down to the water and take the boat to Wizard's Island at Crater Lake NP. My memory is that that hike is 800' down and back up. There's no way I could do that at this time. Maybe in July...

Also tons of hiking trails up and down the Oregon Coast. I took this picture from Cape Perpetua just south of Yachats back in 2002.

Thinking this might be a better trip summer 2027 when I'm fully healed. Would also be cheaper if I could lock hotel rates in the winter. I started thinking about the trip in early April, and prices have gone up considerably since then.

Found the perfect light lunch: cucumber/tomato and red onion salad plus black beans topped with tatziki (Greek) and picante with chips on the side. Those black beans are dressed to go out so they just need the right company. The little red stringy things are julienned smoked sun dried tomato pieces.
