That is an AWESOME video, but has nothing to do with the airplane scenario.

I know but it's the closest example I had show up yesterday.

The real question is...

...How many of us would trust our knowledge of physics to do this? Especially be the first one launched?

I dunno...

I hope they launched a 150lb drum of dirt the first time.

bonus question:

You are riding in a vehicle (lets say an SUV) and flying a RC plane right alongside the very same vehicle, at matching speed.

you throttle down on the plane and position it directly behind the vehicle you are riding in, lets say 300 feet away to ensure no drafting from the vehicle disturbs the flight.

you roll down the rear window of the SUV, and accelerate your RC plane to just 1-2 mph faster than you are moving in said vehicle, preparing to retrieve your plane while still moving at highway speed.

Can you softly fly into the vehicles cabin and land (or really catch) your plane that is technically moving just a little faster than you, or will the drafting from the vehicle cause the plane to slingshot right through the front windshield just as if you were flying it inside the cabin with the windows up? And if so, at what point would that 'slingshot' take effect?

You'd have to throttle down as you got closer to the car. Opening all the windows so there's airflow through would help. Realistically I think there'd be too much turbulence and the dropoff in airspeed too fast to control the landing or land too hard.
