Am rewatching the whole series in order again (have the CDs) and even 7 years later, that series gives me chills

what an amazing representation of our greatest generation, each actor is superb and it really puts you there.

the fact that "main characters" die at any time (obviously since war is that way) is so emotional and really makes you realize (or attempt to) how incredibly close these guys were and what losses then incurred on a daily basis.

the episode outside Foy is amazing, that scene when he runs in and out of the town through the German line and in the church a the end, amazine cinematograpy..

Amazing...I still tear up every episode.

I just wish the same hollywood powerhouses would put together something similiar that showcased the incredible heroism, sacrifice and fortitude of what our brave men and women have endured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

No politics. No BS. Just the same level of cinematic respect to what our brothers and sisters have endured over there.

Book was incredible and the miniseries only added to the overall greatness of these men who helped preserve our great nation.

Hey look! I can post a thumbs up as well without adding anything.....wait, dammit, no I can't.

Urban, I'm with ya, bud. I'm somehow picturing sequences like the last battle in the movie Children of Men for some of the fights. I just don't want it done unless it's done right and apolitical.

What has the grapevine said about the HBO upcoming miniseries Generation Kill? I bought the book way back but don't have HBO and haven't heard anything about it other than a single thread here.

PS- I've about given up on the "Pacific War" series. I think they worried too much about making it like BoB and not the elements of what made BoB so great. How many years has this been in the works?

BoB was a great book and the mini-series just added to it in my oppinion.

Truly amazing what they went through.

bear- The Pacific should be released in 2009 or 2010.

"A 10-part mini-series from the creators of "Band of Brothers" telling the intertwined stories of three Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.”

The Pacific is based on the books 'With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa' by E.B. Sledge and 'Helmet for My Pillow' by Robert Leckie. Both books are first hand accounts of combat in the Pacific by men who had served as infantrymen in the 1st Marine Division.

And here's Captain Dale Dye's blog he's been keeping up through the shoot (he's been senior military advisor/tech advisor on multiple projects, including Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Tigerland, all of the Medal of Honor games, Platoon, etc):

at the end of one of the openings (where the real life vets are talking about what they remember) one of the guys said something to the effect of "We lost a lot of really good men out there" and then started tearing up a little bit.

Gave me chills

This gets me everytime:

When interviewed, he quoted a letter sent to him by Mike Ranney, one of his men:

"I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day, when he said; 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' Grandpa said, 'No, but I served in a company of heroes."

Great series; we've probably watched the whole thing 5 or 6 times now. Only character I don't like is Capt. Sobel (which I don't guess you're supposed to), but I don't think Ross...err...David Schwimmer fits the part.

Frank John Hughes (had to look up his name) does a great job as Guarnere.

Apparently "Ross" did a spot-on imitation of Sobel, according to Easy Company survivors.

(I know it's not a "verified" source, but there's a long discussion here on Schwimmer doing Sobel).
quote:
You need to go to other sites like "Trigger Time" and read the reviews of Schwimmer's performance from the vets who knew Sobel. Pretty much to a man they say Schwimmer nailed it.

Just FYI, tomorrow is the 64th anniversary of D-Day. It's 5:20 p.m. in Paris right now, and about this time 64 years ago, several thousand Allied paratroopers were gearing up for what would be one of the greatest invasions in history.

No question, this was the best war depiction ever put on tv or a moviescreen. Every single character was memorable and the battle scenes were done extremely well.

I've seen it completely about 6 times and I will still watch an episode until it's over whenever I see it on tv.

This series is one of those that will be a definitive depiction of WWII for the next few hundred years.

You know it's a great series when you watch an episode and it changes your day. I feel the same about Black Hawk Down although I don't think it's close to BoB.
