There are some artists out there doing their part to keep country strong:

Jason Aldean
Jake Owen
Florida / Georgia Line
Big and Rich
Dierks Bentley (has a new single "Drunk on a Plane")
Kid Rock has also ventured into the genre. (Check his back catalogue.)

There are a couple of local guys here in South Texas that play a more traditional style of country music. Check out Jarrod Birmingham out of Victoria (he's gaining a pretty big statewide following now) and Richie Allbright out of the big city of Tuleta, TX.

A few I've been listening to a lot lately:

Drive-By Truckers (Gangstabilly and Pizza Deliverance, they lean much more rock in later albums)
Ryan Bingham (Once again, his first two)
Reckless Kelly (a bit more Americana, but still solid)
Turnpike Troubadours
Damn Quails
Jason Isbell
Lucero's Texas and Tennessee EP
Son Volt
Uncle Tupelo

Jason Isbell is the only one you listed that anyone with sense would classify as country.....Son Volt? Really?

People in today's time that are country include, but not limited to Daryle Singletary, Zona Jones, Mo Pitney, etc....Country Music has steel's crying and fiddles sawing

all that is just my opinion though

Jamey Johnson FTW. The vast majority of "country" musicians today should be ashamed.

This song is amazing imo

Yeah, definitely not country. No steel guitars or fiddles anywhere. In any of the others either.

I hope this is a joke hahaha these guys are ruining the genre. Your list literally got worse haha

I've really started to listen to Jason Isbell and Justin Townes Earle's country stuff. They have some good music. I also like Whitey Morgan and the 78's. But I always find myself going back to Jamey Johnson and Sturgill Simpson. Those two are the best in modern country. Unfortunately you'll never hear their music on the radio.

That was actually a pretty funny and well put together troll. Especially with the "Drunk On A Plane" plug.

I was one of the first people to venture into Amazon Prime streaming, and have Chris Knight on rotation a bit. He's great, as is Sturgill Simpson (his latest not there as of yet).

There's a recent article from We Hate Pop Country where Jason Aldean complains about being called "Bro Country". Good stuff.

Personal side note, I think FGL may be the worst thing that's ever happened to country music.

Couple new additions that you guys may enjoy. I haven't read the entire thread so excuse me for any repeats.

The Damn Quails - Good band making the rounds on the red dirt/Texas scene
Shane Smith and the Saints - Smooth country/Americana with lots of fiddle and guitar
Scott H Biram - Hard driving. kick ass rock/blues. Think Hank III
Blackberry Smoke - More Southern Rock but have a good country feel and sound and some catchy songs
Kasey Anderson - Probably more Americana and comparable to Ryan Adams and Ryan Bingham

I listen to the classics like george jones, george strait, willie, waylon, merle, etc.

Do Country fans ever spend as much time as Rock fans do mining the classics for "new stuff"? Rockers will spend their entire lives going through catalogs of Beatles, Zeppelin, Stones, Hendrix, Allman Brothers, etc. to hear or re-hear everything they can, and they're never concerned with finding new artists that sound like those guys. A lot of them have completely written off new rock completely, and they don't care at all. They continue to find new things in the old songs, even if its a song they've heard dozens of times. Is it possible to do that with "classic" country? I don't think so because the layers and depth just aren't there. I have gone back to some old George Strait recently, and hearing "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" was easily as good as anything on the radio in the last 20 years.

There are a few pop country songs and artists that will stand the test of time, but "pop" tends to mean "popular today".

I'm a big fan of Zac Brown and Brad Paisley, by the way. I think they'll be the George and Garth of the 2000s. Sturgill Simpson has potential until he loses his Eastern European former Soviet Block guitar player who still speaks broken English. That guitarist is incredible, but he was recruited as a ringer for Sturgill. He's like the Stevie Ray Vaughn of Estonia, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on to something else.

I disagree that you can't do the same to classic country music that you can to rock. I was born in 1984, listen mostly to rock and country and the majority of it came out before I turned 10. I like what I like for the reasons you mention at the beginning of your post and I find plenty of layers and nuance in country music at 31 that I didn't get at 21 or 11. After you've lived through some of the tribulations in life, some of the quality country music can really hit you in places you didn't know you had as a younger man. There have been some amazing songwriters in the genre, like rock...and like rock, the greatest ones are pretty much geriatrics or dead nowadays.

...and I rarely listen to any contemporary country. Just about the only country music I've bought in the last 10 years is Jamey Johnson. The rest is just mining the past at this point. Modern country music is redundant and godawful.

Wow, I know this is an old post but saying Son Volt isn't country is terrible. Tear Stained Eye is one of the greatest country songs of all time. Traditional country music is probably my favorite genre and Son Volt's Trace album is high on my best ever list.

Speaking of modern country artist, you know who is doing it better than anyone else now, Tyler Childers.
