He was more than a "few hits in the 80s" Not to mention his musical talent on playing, especially piano and guitar. He also wrote many other hit songs.

I can't get over how ****ing cool he is just tossing his guitar.
He shredded so hard, he's basically done with it. So.****ing.Cool.

I'm not doing the "mic drop" anymore. I'm just "tossing the guitar"

Prince was so great because you couldn't box him. Not to Pop, R&B, Soul, Funk, Rock, or even the gospel influences he played. He played music. Wrote it. And showcased it. The Trifecta.

Here's the thing about Prince. There are guitarists with more technical skill, but few that played with more feeling. That's what made him a virtuoso.

I remember seeing an interview with Eric Clapton probably over 20 years ago. He said of Prince that where he led, the others followed.
Don't know how apocryphal this story is, but (allegedly) someone around the same time period asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world. He (supposedly) said "I don't know. Ask Prince."

I heard this same thing about Eddie van Halen and C Chris Duarte

Sorry, but the kindest response to this is...no. Beethoven and Mozart, to name 2, were musical geniuses. Prince was, well, pretty decent to good, depending on who you ask. I didn't care much for him in the '80s -- a couple of his songs were putrid bad. A few sounded exactly like each other. But I grew to appreciate some of his stuff in later years.

Does anyone remember Vanity 6, a girls group Prince had some role in forming?
The arbiter of genius in music has arrived. Apparently Andy thinks it's determined by ability to compose music. Singing, playing instruments, performing not included. Take note, people.
The Lawyer seems to be implying is that only being able to compose highly complex styles of music proves genius.

Prince composed and produced most of his music and all of it for a period of five or six years. He could also play just about any instrament...incredably well. Like Beck, on some albums Prince played all instruments.

from wiki-
A genius is a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of new advances in a domain of knowledge. Despite the presence of scholars in many subjects throughout history, many geniuses have shown high achievements only in a single subject. There is no scientifically precise definition of genius, and the question of whether the notion itself has any real meaning has long been a subject of debate, although psychologists are converging on a definition that emphasizes creativity and eminent achievement. <----That would be Prince

Yeah. and the 39 albums is just nuts. Thats 39 studio albums worth of material he released in 37 years. how many artists even put out an albums worth of material every 2-3 years any more?

Rolling Stone Top 100 rankings had him at:

37 - guitarist
33 - singer
27 - artist (mind you many of the top artists were bands)
18 - songwriter

thats some exclusive company right there, very few are on all of those lists in the top 40.

I think the first time I heard it it was about Stevie Ray Vaughan. Or Hendrix (back when Clapton with Cream).

Rumor is AIDS/HIV and that he's had it since the 90s and just recently quit taking medication due to religious reasons (Jehovas Witness)?

I thought they still take medication, just not blood transfusions.

Supposedly varying interpretations and the more extreme believers believe that health can be achieved through prayer. He had been practicing since 2001, and supposedly contracted in 90s, so if true he obviously hadn't believed that the entire time. Most do accept medications though.

It's the rumor so who knows, may be AIDS, may not be, may have been taking medication maybe not, might have stopped because of religious views or due to them no longer being effective. AIDS certainly seems plausible as the Flu shouldn't knock out a healthy 57 year old.

If you have AIDS, that's not what kills you. Lack of an immune system kills you, so flu could certainly do the job. Some people don't tolerate the drugs well, and you do have to keep switching them because the virus evolves resistance.

Still seems pretty far fetched. If he had HIV you would think it would be an open secret.

TMZ reporting his emergency stop at the hospital was for a drug overdose. They seem to imply that it was heroin.

That would be a shocker considering how anti drug he is.

Dude could play 50 instruments, was one of the greatest guitar players in the world despite not really focusing on being a guitarist, had a giant catalogue of great music that he wrote, played, and produced himself. Even if you hated everything he did it would be hard not to recognize his genius.

Just out of curiosity, I went to Amazon to see about picking up some of his older CD's and every album available for sale through Amazon is out of stock right now.

what is this "album" you speak of?

I certainly didn't own everything Prince put out. But proud to say my itunes Prince library is 14 albums and 181 songs. 2 are compilations the Hits and The Hits/B-sides. The rest are studio albums and singles.

edit - fixed count, my library has Prince separate from Prince and the Revolution.

I have no problem buying an older CD for a couple of bucks and ripping it myself into iTunes. Same difference and much cheaper.

Looks like many, many others have the same idea.

Probably the first time that I remembered that we lost all Viacom channels almost two years ago. This would be the first time that I've ever uttered "man, I wish I still had my MTV."

I'm aware, hence me saying AIDS would explain why the Flu, which should rarely kill a normal healthy 57 year old, could be the cause of death. That may not have been, but what I was trying to say is that without a depleted immune system the Flu shouldn't typically be the cause of death for a 57 year old.

Listening to his schedule it seemed plausible that it could have been exhaustion working in tandem with the flu, but that would be odd as well.

I'm not even a huge fan of his but he was definitely a genius. It's not like there can only be 10 geniuses or something. And they come in different forms and packages. Prince happened to be one of the most diversely and uniquely packaged ones we've ever seen.

Loved Prince.
Saw him 3 times and each was incredible for different reasons.
Saw at Earls Court in London around 93. Stayed late after the show to finish beers. House lights had come on and about 7/8 had left the arena. Heard some feedback and saw a small man in velour track suit start strumming guitar... Then shredding it. Prince. Those that stayed were rushing the stage. His dancers and band mates were running back on - you could tell totally surprised - and then busted in to about 3-4 more songs/jams. Those that left were running back in - we thought we were gonna be trampled Euro soccer crowd style - but everyone just wanted to party.
Another time seeing him at The Summit - late 90's - and they announced an after show at the Roxy. Went there at 11:30, waited till 2 then the place really started buzzing - Barry Bonds came and stood next to us - and Prince played an hour of greatest hits. Amazing.

That being said, if there's an artist on your bucket list...go see them. Pay the money, take vacation days, whatever. If there's a legendary artist out there that maybe you just arent into, go see them, and see what the buzz is about. While you can.

This is is such great advice that really hits home right now. I'm a big prince fan and I've said for decades that I can't wait to see him live - but I never got a chance to do so. Really wish I made it more of a priority now.
Really???

You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

He mastered virtually every instrument known to man and could pick one up and learn it with no instruction almost instantly. He's one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in history.

Prince and playing "every instrument known to man" is an urban legend that's been around forever but even with the Internet, people still believe. He does play many instruments, but they're all variations of guitars, percussion and keyboards/piano. It's not like he could pick up a cello and start wailing.
