Don't worry, Disney is almost done with their live actions. I hear Song of the South is in early talks.

That's a great point, and it makes absolutely no sense. There was ALSO Dumbo in April. I cannot figure out why Disney is squeezing *everything* into 2019, other than to, yeah, test that theory. It's insane.
This writer seems to think that it is so they will have all their top franchises ready and available at the launch of Disney+

However, Disney overloaded this year with the most significant installments of their most prominent brands. They did so partially to make sure those titles will be dropping onto Disney+ over the next 18 months or so. Fair or not, rival studios had plenty of advance notice to get the hell out of the Mouse House's way this season.

Just got out. It's about what you expect. Visually stunning, nothing surprising or amazing about the story.

Timon and Pumba are the best part because they make enough changes to the jokes and rely on Rogen and Eichners personalities to inject some freshness even though they are hitting the same story beats

I feel sorry for nature documentarians who just had their appeal of HD footage of real animals stolen by the VFX industry

Truly amazing visuals. Never had a problem with lack of facial expressions that many have complained about. Young Simba was adorable.

The story obviously identical.

Timon and Pumbaa were absolute greatness as expected. And The Lion Sleeps Tonight easily wins the award for most improved song.

About my only complaint is that I feel there was room to add more and really open up this story. Sad that "He Lives In You" was just in the credits.

Definitely recommended and IMAX is the best option. Shot and projected in full IMAX.

I read it was like 30 minutes longer than the original - were there not a lot of new scenes?

Just got out. Visually just wow. Some scenes seemed like it was filmed out in the wild. Rogen and Eichner put a good twist in their respective roles. Based on the trailers, I was worried about Scar, but ended up being pretty good.
My biggest complaint were Beyonc and Glover. To me, it just seemed like they were not in it. Like they were reading the lines. There were a few moments were I just kind of cringed.

How are you guys seeing it already?

I thought it dropped on Friday? Or do some of you live on the east coast?

Responding to the guy above, I was disappointed to see Beyonce in it. I don't have a favorable opinion of her, she was probably just there to do as little as possible and collect a big check. I still remember when she shut down a whole hospital wing to have a baby and other families couldn't get in to see their kids because of it.

Great post. Beyonce definitely seems like the lazy type. I mean she's sold 160 million albums worldwide, so she definitely needs the money from voice acting in a cartoon.

Your memory about the hospital wing is also spot on. At least, until the week after the baby was born in 2012 when the hospital director revealed that the 2 people who claimed they couldn't get to see their families because of Beyonce's presence were actually lying (GASP) to try and make some money off her or the hospital.

After the mediocre reviews, I had no intention of seeing this in the theater, but I'd been in front of a computer all day, needed to get out of the house, and no one was doing anything tonight, so I decided to see it last minute. Surprised I could even get a ticket, but in one of the most popular theaters in LA, at a 7:10 PM showing, the theater wasn't even halfway sold out by showtime.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but yes, it's visually stunning, otherwise there's just not a lot of "there" there. I vaguely remember the animated version (I was "too old" for cartoons by the time it came out, and don't remember when/where I finally first saw it), but this has to be almost the exact same movie. It's just incredibly thin. A story that works in a mid-'90s animated movie just doesn't translate quite the same when it's "live action" in 2019 and hardly a thing is changed. It simultaneously felt 20 minutes too long but could have somehow also used another 20 minutes of character development. And it was so obvious where they needed to flesh things out a bit - like two or three blatant instances - but instead they just raced right through a few incredibly important moments. It's weird, it's almost like the original is SUCH a classic that the felt they either couldn't mess with it in any way, or were so confident in its classic stature that they didn't even try. And what results, when translated to "live action," just feels a little hurried and a little off throughout because of that.

That said, it's still a good movie. And yes, Rogen and Eichner 100% steal the show. Like, to the point where you sit up in your seat the moment they arrive on screen - they're such a breath of fresh air - and then you're just waiting to get back to them every scene they're not in from then on out. I would seriously pay money to watch their own spin-off movie.

All I know for sure is that Disney needs to move past these animal-only "live action" remakes. They've achieved utter photo-realism, and mastered the form for the most part, but I think we're discovering that there's definitely a limit to this kind of filmmaking. We've officially been there done that, and it's time to bring some humans back into the mix for these things.

Ha, agreed. She's literally the hardest-working pop star on the planet. And no doubt did this because of her kids, and seemed to be giving it her all in doing so. That said, I do admit that she's not the best voice actor, but I didn't think it was from a lack of trying. It's just not her particular skill. Disney will more than make up for it in ticket and record sales because of her, though.

There are some new scenes, and some new characters in one part of the movie (which was probably the best addition), and then some scenes that I feel probably were a little longer this time. Even though it's 30 minutes longer, I didn't feel like the movie felt paced slower. I'm sure the original is the same way, but it's kind of stunning how quickly the movie gets from the part where adult Nala and Simba are reunited to the end of the movie.

I'm sure there will be several Billy Eichner/Timon memes and they will be great. His delivery (and Timon's facial expressions) were great for one liners.

The only time I had a facial expression complaint was at the end of I Just Can't Wait to Be King. It ends on a pretty big note, but Simba's and Nala's faces/mouths barely move, as if they were just saying the word "king" at normal conversation volume. It was definitely noticeable to me in that moment.

Speaking of volume, for those who saw it, was the theater experience good from a sound perspective? I was in a Cinemark XD theater, but the only times I really felt they used the XD, or that the movie was at a volume I would expect, were a) in the opening Circle of Life when they bounced the repeated African phrase back and forth off the left and right speakers and b) when Mufasa was speaking from the clouds. Other than that, it just seemed like the volume was turned down. I hope that was just the theater I was in and not the movie itself.

Had a chance to see it last night at a early showing. While I thought is was a good movie and the realism of it was impressive I left not feeling it is a must see. After reading your post I think it captured why. Good review.

Already at $100M overseas.

$22-25M on Thursday domestic, which is just between Captain Marvel (20) and Black Panther (25), and well ahead of BATB (16).

Word of mouth will be a pretty big factor in determining how big this gets, but it should be able to top BATB's opening weekend (174).

Starting to think it won't be nearly as leggy as Aladdin, as the audience reviews probably won't be as glowing, but then again this is a more popular property.
