All of the buzz around this movie in the gaming community is that will feature real world players either being pulled into the fantasy world, a la the cartoon, or else controlling the action of their characters at the gaming table. It won't just be a D&D branded fantasy movie.

With the popularity of streaming D&D and other RPG sessions, seems like a decent time to try this on a modest budget

I really hope that doesn't happen. You don't see real people reading the comics that Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther exist in in the MCU movies.

The only way it might be OK is more like Lego Movie where it only happens toward the end and actually takes the story one more level up. But that's incredibly difficult to pull off and if the players get sucked into that world it will just end up as some rehash of the stupid trope of a Stranger in a strange land/A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. It just dumbs down and sorta doesn't treat that world with respect. Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance (like Middle Earth) are rich deep worlds that a proper movie should take as seriously as The MCUniverse.

Negative on almost all of that. The movie will almost certainly be a sort of action comedy. It won't be something that takes itself too seriously, but will reflect the tone of most actual RPG sessions, which is a pretty good mix of lighthearted comedic and action-oriented storytelling. That's what I'm hearing from the D&D circles as to what people in the industry expect it to be. Obviously the studio could go a different direction ultimately, but the stakeholders want something VERY different from the previous attempt and more like the various streaming game sessions that are all the rage right now.

Sticking with the MCU comparison, I'd expect something much closer to Guardians than more serious entries like Winter Soldier or Black Panther.

Using real players has worked to varying degrees in television. Futurama used that structure in their D&D episodes. Hell, Community did it with JUST the players sitting at the table without ever cutting to the fantasy world. Not saying the D&D movie will do THAT but the table portion can be good entertainment.

Players getting sucked into the world is just Jumanji, right?

The new one, yes. Pretty much. Though D&D did it first, for what that's worth.

Seems like it's the new trend in Hollywood. Ready player one is going to be pretty much the same thing

All of the above. It's not my jam but some have HUGE followings. The Penny Arcade guys do one that is supposedly the best, which makes sense because Jerry would be a hell of a DM.

Being a pretty big D&D player and following three live play podcasts (Critical Role, Adventure Zone, and Tabletop Escapades) it better damn well be an action comedy where it shows the people at the table. Otherwise it is generic fantasy that won't differentiate itself from LOTR

Critical role's campaign 2 episode 1 had over 100k watching live on twitch at one point, as well as thousands watching on youtube and alpha last month.

Agrees with GotG and it being an action adventure, I suggested the same thing previously here. I'm not saying the movie should be serious (eg grimdark) but that it should take the world seriously (eg GotG, Ant Man, Thor, etc).

I just think it'll fail if it's a players get sucked in story. Maybe if it's a players are controlling the world (what I meant with my Lego Movie comparison - where it's revealed it's all been a kids imagination) but not convinced of that either.

There are some great characters and stories in the various D&D world settings (Drizzt, Elminster, the Harpers, the Drow, etc in Forgotten Realms, the main plot in Dragonlance, etc). Not that you should hinge the first film on this but from a mutli-film planning standpoint you'd lose out on that richer world if you focus it on the real world people (see how poorly Narnia did past the first one).

The best Saturday Morning Cartoon of my childhood, narrowly beating out the Superfriends.

Ripping off Star Wars like no other: Dungeon Master = Yoda Venger = Darth Vader

except Yoda was not Darth's father like he was in D&D

Loved the cartoon.

Refresh my memory but didn't the ending have that yoda fella taking the kids back home. He had the power all along to do it. Wtf?

Another vote for Dragonlance. I still have all of my original paperbacks of the series and also have an art book: The Art of Dragonlance.

I have the collector's edition that is all 3 books bound together. I have the Legends trilogy collector's edition as well. That's one I'd really like to see make the big screen.

What are the odds we'll finally get a Fantasy Genre movie with some decent bikini armour?

Just have fun with it; like a Skyrim mod.

Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.
