How can anybody not play air drums during Tom Sawyer?? Same goes with air guitar on Eruption.

as a drummer.. i can truthfully say, he certainly did not get it perfect.
He's off at 3/4 seconds and again at 14/15 seconds.

I had all 3 kids in the back of the truck mimicking me on Spirit of the Radio last week. Whole carload of air drummers.
It's amazing how quickly my 2.5 and 4 year old have learned to throw up horns only during appropriate songs.
My 8 and 10 year old daughters have been doing this for a few years now.
I was really impressed with my 10 year old's air guitar last week on the way to school. Can't remember the song but I think I wiped a tear from my eye.

I've never asked this question before but it's been on my mind for a long time.
I think Rush is garbage and cannot understand why anyone likes them. Am I the only one who feels this way? What am I missing?

You aren't missing anything. People have different tastes. There's many people who listen to Dave Matthews Band and are actually able to somehow be considered mentally capable of many things. So don't sweat it if you don't like a certain band.
I'm in the same boat as you. I personally cannot stand Rush. I understand why people like them but I just can't get into them. I do like a few songs like "Tom Sawyer", "Working Man", etc. but their catalog as a whole is a meh for me. Never could explain it. I proudly wear it as a badge. And Neil Young.
I don't hate The Who but I can certainly do without them. Neil Young has some good stuff and bad stuff. I can tolerate some of his songs. Someone mentioned DMB earlier and I don't think there is one redeeming quality of that band. I could never stand them and change the station anytime they come on. The only band I think is more overrated than Rush is The Greatful Dead

It may be an age thing, or if you ever played an instrument. I grew up while Rush was relevant and was fascinated by the absolute wizardry that Neil Peart had on the drums. And with the lyrics to some of their sci-fi fantasy story songs like Red Barchetta. Maybe you have to have a little nerd in you.

Why I've been a Rush fan for 30+ years:
Musicality.
Unique sound....nobody sounds like them and they are instantly recognizable.

Talent wise I think they are excellent. Song wise, not so much. Pinball Wizard, Eminence Front and Baba O'Riley are good, but I don't care for the rest of their songs. Like them or not, a few of them are certainly very talented musicians. Beauford for sure, consistently ranked as a top drummer of all time, and doing that in an acoustic soft rock band is impressive enough. As a musician myself, I call that a redeeming quality any day, and never overlook it regardless if I like the band/artist or not.
I actually like some of the not as overplayed songs like Can't Explain and Join Together and Goin' Mobile better than the ones you mentioned.Average Joe said:Talent wise I think they are excellent. From a purely technical standpoint, Rush is great band however their music can often come across as dry, cold and almost academic. Because they want everything to be so perfect, it's like they forgot how to have fun. IMO bands like Pink Floyd and Radiohead also have this problem from time to time whereas bands like u2 and Coldplay have the opposite problem... (maybe next time I'll reference an American band)

I'm thinking some of you guys just aren't listening to the right songs. If you're just sticking to what you've heard on your rock radio station, you're missing out. Like saying you don't like Soundgarden because you think Spoonman is not that great or you're sick of it.
These bands aren't lauded for no reason. You just have to dig deeper.
- Rush: Entre Nous, Circumstances, and Red Barchetta
- Neil Young- Are you serious? Just listen to Live Rust
- The Who - Wha?? Go listen to Live at Leeds.....with volume set at 11 and get back to me.
