This thread was next to the Venom thread and for a second I read "Tom Hardy is Mr. Rogers."

But will it have creepy ass dolls?

Damn... I had forgotten about the dolls. That alone explains the weird vibe I got while watching this show that prompted me to change the channel.

Inspiration for doll?

I have no hate for Mr. Rogers but I didn't watch the show much. I was a Captain Kangaroo kid, h r pufinstuf, Banana Splits, a little Mr. Peppermint, and Slam Bang Theater with Icky Twerp.
I doubt anyone who watched Bosom Buddies could have predicted what he would become.

I liked Mr. Rodgers. Captain Kangaroo was creepy and weird!

I was a big fan of Mr. Rogers and 3-2-1 Contact. I never liked any of the other PBS shows.

They were both weird, but I'm not sure how anyone couldn't think Mr. Rogers was creep factor 10. If that were to air now people would lose their mind. Considering the soft, under the current serial killer vibe Mr. Rogers had and then bake in the acid trip, sadistically scary puppets the whole program was a precursor to the movie "Mandy".

It would scare the hell out of kids these days but that's probably more a reflection on the pussifcation of society than anything.

Speaking of creepy, Daniel Tiger (Mr. Rogers spin-off) freaks my dog out. Every time my son watches it, she growls at the tv and hides behind the couch.

Showed it to my 12 year old this year who had never seen an episode of Mr. Rogers before, and he loved it. I'm going to make it a point to take my whole family to this.

Did you see the documentary last year?

I did. Fantastic.

What's the easiest way to watch that doc? I missed it at the theater unfortunately and have heard nothing but great things.

Woman in trailer: "Please don't ruin my childhood."
Everyone watching trailer: "I agree."

That's the worry. I really hope they don't create some faux drama for the movie. The documentary showed you don't need that with him. He impacted so many kids lives by talking about subjects no one was at time and that's what they should focus on.

I...didn't like the movie trailer. I thought Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers was a little distracting.

I felt like hanks was a little on the nose in his speech impersonation, and that was distracting.

But overall really good movie.

Pretty dang good. A near perfect first half, but I thought it got the slightest bit weird/slow in the second half. Ultimately finished strong, though.

Ha, I'm afraid so. I've already written two others this week and Rick summed up thoughts on this one pretty well above. Certain movies spark more thoughts/discussion from me, but this one was just a nice, easy, feel good movie and that's about it.

This time of year, I average one a week or so. That said, this week I'll be seeing four, which I don't think I've ever done before. I'm just trying to keep up with all the Oscar hopefuls, and then others are for research.

That said, January through April, I might only average one every three weeks, seeing as that's usually the worst four-month stretch for movies. Then May through August, with all the summer blockbusters, probably two every three weeks.

I bet if I really did the calculations, over the course of the year, I'd average somewhere around three per month or so.

Ha, strangely enough, I never had Moviepass. The two theaters I frequent didn't take it.

This is a wonderful little film, very quiet and gentle. It's an extended therapy session for the Matthew Rhys character and is only tangentially about Mr. Rogers.

Matthew Rhys was a revelation to me. He is excellent. He portrays complex emotions seemingly effortlessly. I never felt he was acting. (I never watched The Americans. I may have to check that out.)

All the other actors are terrific, including Chris Cooper. I am not normally a fan of his, but this part was made for him.

The exception is Tom Hanks. I was not persuaded by him at all as Mr. Rogers. The artifice of using the setting of the TV show as a framing device did not work for me. Rogers' message came through loud and clear, but I felt Hanks was being Hanks, which is not a bad thing most of the time but was distracting to me here.

There are so many good things to say about this movie.

It is not meant for children.

Here is the original Esquire article upon which the movie is loosely based.

This does not bother me at all, but most of the plot of the movie is fictionalized. The author of the Esquire article did in fact write the article mentioned in the film, and he had written some problematic things in the past that Mr. Rogers' producer was wary of. The author and Mr. Rogers did develop a friendship. But the part about getting into a fight with his dying father is not true. Also, the movie uses Mr. Rogers' actual comments, but changes the context of a number of them. What we are left with is a movie about the relationship between two real people within a context that is mostly made up.

Went in to it blind. Was really taken for a loop.

Ended up being a really nice surprise. Very well executed. Great representation of Fred.

I thought that Hanks' accent was a bit off, sounding more like someone from Alabama than someone from Pennsylvania. He got the mannerisms spot-on, though.
