I really want to see this. Emma is so great... glad to hear the review.

I need to see his other two movies. The Lobster just looks dumb to me, but Sacred Deer seems really intriguing.

Love that you're getting your fill of the Dome on this trip.

I loved the first half of The Lobster, but kind of disliked the second half. That said, I know plenty of people who love the entire thing, I was just exhausted by the end. I haven't seen Sacred Deer yet, but need to. The Favourite definitely feels like Lanthimos' most accessible, and it's also the only one he hasn't written, which is interesting.

My list of movies I want to see is getting pretty long now, what sucks is most of them won't come out anywhere near me.

This and Green Book are tops on my list.

Just saw it and loved it! Performances carry the movie for sure. I can't wait to see this again! Easily top ten for the year, maybe top 5.

So, so good. I was finally able to see it this weekend, and it's so fantastically funny, witty, and captivating. I was a little turned off by the final scene/image (I won't spoil it here, obviously) - I thought it tried a little too hard to be almost annoyingly "artsy" - but overall, this was easily one of my favorites (no pun intended) of the year. At least one of the three female leads will likely win an Oscar, and my bet would be Olivia Colman, who plays the Queen. The supporting characters are all hilarious too, especially Nicholas Hoult, who surprised the hell out of me. I also love the way this was shot, with the fish-eye lenses at times. Just the look in general was phenomenal. At this point, I'd say this might even be the front runner for Best Picture, and I'd be perfectly fine with that result in an "off" year like this when nothing has quite seized that mantle just yet. Definitely give this a shot when you guys get the chance.

Nicholas Hoult is that guy who pops up in movies and I'm always like "oh yeah! This guy!" and I'm always impressed.

Saw it last night, and it's my favorite movie of the year. I haven't seen all of the likely best picture noms yet, but on my way. If this doesn't win best picture then it has to win best original screenplay and best lead actress. And all of the costume, set design and makeup awards. Loved it!!!

Surprised at the really low audience score.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses. These movies aren't exactly tailor made for many.

I remember reading so many user reviews on redbox about people so pissed because they never explicitly said what It was in It Comes at Night

Two likely reasons:

1) Lots of adult content that may be sensitive for super conservative people
2) Some folks just might not like or get the dark humor

Saw it last night and really liked it. Was hoping it would be my clear-cut front-runner for Best Picture, but I didn't quite come out of it thinking that. Although to be honest I have no idea what is.

Did have amazing performances from all three actresses, and you got to see Emma Stone's tit so that was a huge plus.

I saw this yesterday and thought it was hilarious. It's definitely a dark comedy and absolutely a satire on the period, which I can see contributing to the low audience score from stuffy folks who like their historical fiction to be stiff and formal. Emma Stone was fantastic, Rachel Weisz was bitingly wonderful, and Olivia Colman excellently plays the sad lonely woman masquerading as a high powered monarch. Agree that Nicholas Hoult was hilarious. Another guy I've seen in a number of movies this year, including this one, is Joe Alwyn. He was in Operation Finale earlier this year, was great as Abigail's "love interest" in this film, and plays Robert Dudley in "Mary, Queen of Scots." Life is good for that dude, between his costars and his real life love TSwift.

He was also pretty good in Boy Erased, which came out in November. Dude is blowing up.

Just saw this movie. I think I'm a fan of dark humor, and I had some good awkward laughs during the movie (while everyone else was pretty silent), but I guess I don't get it. Movie of the year???? Maybe I'm not artsy enough to understand. I will say the female leads were great at acting; but, I just don't think I'm made to appreciate this sort of movie I guess.

For everyone that loved it, would be interested to hear more about what made you like it so much.

That dance routine was ridiculously awesome and one of my favorite moments from any movie this year.

Man, that dance was amazing. I was looking around the theater to see if everyone else was realizing how awesome and random it was.

For starters, it has the absolute best dialogue of the year. I just loved the constant sniping and obscene insults. "You look like a badger," still has me laughing every time I think about it. This film should be a lock for Best Original Screenplay because there was nothing as thoroughly audacious as this all year.

First, thank you for providing such a detailed response. This is why I love this forum. I agree on the dialogue. It was phenomenal. "You look like a badger" is one of the best dialogue lines I've ever seen in a movie.

I loved how the traditional gender roles were completely reversed. In this movie the men are in the background, often wearing fancy wigs and makeup, and are almost solely there to be used by the women as nothing more than a means to an end. The three women are all complex characters with vicious self-serving motivations, which unfortunately is a rarity to see since those types of characters are almost always men. I was also impressed with how I found each woman at various times to be either completely despicable or extremely sympathetic. These are often not nice people, but they're still people. I also liked how there was a strong correlation with the more power that they accumulated, the more willing they were to behave in such a deplorable manner.

Great points. Hadn't thought about the gender reversal this way, but you're absolutely right and agree it was interesting. I thought the three women were fascinating to watch, in particular Olivia Culman as the Queen was truly exceptional.

The cinematography was straight-up amazing. The use of wide-angle and fisheye lenses was great, as were the unique camera angles and the tracking shots of the characters constantly moving around that giant castle. They also relied almost exclusively on natural lighting, be it the daylight pouring in from the windows or a single candle at night. Those low light shots are really difficult and these are arguably among the best since Barry Lyndon.

Agreed, the cinematography and costume design was great. Just a beautifully shot movie and the fisheye lense was really cool.

Finally, parts of it were just so unexpectedly absurd that I couldn't help but like it. Horatio is listed in the credits as the "Fastest Duck in the City." That dance routine was ridiculously awesome and one of my favorite moments from any movie this year. Abigail is so consumed with plotting her next move that her husband's wedding night expectations are an inconvenient afterthought. This kind of obnoxious randomness is a hallmark of Yorgos Lanthimos and one of several reasons why he's one of my favorite directors. I could go on and on, but hopefully this is sufficient.

Agree there were some great moments. I think one of the issues was my theater and the fact that people just weren't laughing. I was by myself and laughed quite a bit, but the tone of the crowd seemed to affect my experience negatively. Lots of people were shocked at how it ended as well. I think the last 15 minutes and ending could have been better.

I also in general struggle with "artistic" movies. I'm willing to admit I tend to enjoy more plot driven movies. I enjoyed it enough that I would give it a second watch, maybe with a better idea of what to expect. Regardless, it personally wasn't one of my top movies of the year but I can definitely appreciate where you and others are coming from and recognize the quality of the movie production overall.

Movie was ok. Hated the ending though. (If we can call it one.)

Solid performances, but not a plot that particularly captivated me. And by the halfway point, you're not really rooting for Abigail anymore, so I had somewhat lost interest.

Also, I couldn't stand that fisheye lens they used. Didn't fit the story at all and was distracting.

Loved it! Hilarious and great point on the gender roles. I was thinking the same thing about how funny that theme was when Emma stone was yelling **** over and over as she walked down the long hall past the silent guard. All the men in the film are simply tools to be used by the woman running the country and the 2 women trying to run her.
