saw it today....

daughter loved it - NYU theater studies student

wife hated it - she doesn't mind art films but this just was not her thing

me - all over the map loved certain things (some dialogue, costumes and some historical stuff that was at least mostly true to fact) but hated others (the monotonous music, the lingering painful scenes, the overall plot and/or lack of a conclusion, a little too over the top at times, etc.).

From an actors perspective I get it - it was meaty characters and dialogue and drama for the leads - and that's why hollywood will love this.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it, although I agree that last scene was...something. I understand the point they were trying to convey, but I was really ready for the movie to end BEFORE that

When I came home i checked the Oscar noms to see what all it got nominated for and was glad to see it got a Cinematography nomination. That's what really stood out to me watching the movie. I loved the fish eyes and all the other camera techniques they employed.

And agreed with the writing. Very well done.

So this movie is available now on HBO for anyone that hasn't seen it and is interested. I really enjoyed it, the acting between the three lead women (Colman, Weisz, and Stone) was outstanding.

I thought Weisz deserved the Oscar after watching that, I thought she was the best actor/actress in the film, she killed every scene, better than Colman who won for best actress. She was so good, probably the best work she's ever done.

Nicholas Hoult should have at least been nominated, he was great.

I get the criticism of the ending. To me it was basically Stone having an epiphany, that she won, but lost in the end. Queen Anne is going to continue to degrade in health, appears both diabetic and had a stroke, and she will be at her beck and call. The tasks she is asked to perform will get worse as time goes on. She may have succeeded in becoming a Lady again, but forcing out Weisz was a mistake, and she wasn't looking at the big picture. Anne is a broken woman, no children...except her rabbits, degrading health, and will only get worse.

With that look on her face I could just her GOB in the background saying "I've made a huge mistake."

Good insight on the ending. I like that take. Rewatched the entire thing on HBO as well and liked it even more the second time.

Watched it last night on HBO. It was the last Best Picture I hadn't seen.

Really enjoyed it.

It was definitely a textbook head scratcher of who gets nominated for what. Weisz, Colman, and Stone were more triple leads, or triple supporting. Not sure why Colman got the nod for Best Actress. If anything I felt Stone would have been in there, since her arc was basically the backbone of the movie.

Nice assessment of the ending Max Power. I agree with that approach.

For those who like The Crown, Olivia Colman will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth in the next season.

She was also in Fleabag on Amazon. I just watched that recently, it's fantastic. Two seasons, each 6 episodes long, episodes about 30 minutes each. It's dry, funny, and dark as well. Highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys British humor.

I didn't read too much into the ending,

I took it as a metaphor for her life - in a cage at the whims of a crazy woman, and regret creeping in..

Overall I liked the movie, thought RW was great, and it was good to see Stone in something more serious.

The direction was really really good too.
