This song was in my head all day long. Thanks to those that reminded me about this man's music.
I called my Mom today and told her I remembered every Sunday after church we would clean the house, A family tradition, and she would put on these records and we would sing along with the greatest artist. I read her the names listed and we both laughed because she still has all the records.

This song is Exhibit A in support of my original nomination of Gord in this post. Just frickin' beautiful and poetic.

It's a great one and he has a few for sure. Just not sure he had the depth or longevity to be an all-time great.

Another Canadian btw. Quite a few on these lists:
Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen

and not sure if these have been mentioned but other canadians - kd lang, alanis morissette, sarah mclachlan, robbie robertson (more known for The Band perhaps but he did a lot of solo too)

I know he has been mentioned but Willie Nelson. He changed country music. Not the greatest voice, but iconic. And some truly great songs.

Angle Flying Too Close to the Ground is my personal favorite of his.

One of my best friends in the world is Fred Foster. He owned Monument Records and was the guy who signed Kris as an artist, and produced all of his records.

Kristofferson never intended to be a singer. He had approached Fred hoping to get signed as a songwriter to Monument's publishing company, Combine Music. He was asking for more money that writers typically got, so Fred asked him to play a few songs -he played 4 - I don't recall all of them, but I know "To Beat The Devil" and "Jody And The Kid" were two of them. Fred said "I'll give you a publishing deal on one condition....I want to sign you to Monument as an artist as well." Kristofferson argued that he was not a good singer, but Fred was persistent and so he agreed.

Turns out Fred was right, he wound up being a huge star, both as a recording artist and an actor.

I met Kris Kristofferson once in a bizarre way.

I was over at my friend Craig Kirschenbauer's house just playing tag football outside. It was over the Christmas break in 1978. this was on Ft. Leavenworth military base and I was 12.

We went in the house and were just taking a break and around the corner comes Kris Kristofferson in like sweat pants and a t-shirt. I was like "whoa"!!!! "uhhhhh......".... my friend was like "oh yeah this is my uncle" and he shook my hand introducing himself. I was just dumbstruck really. He was there visiting his sister and family over Christmas.

He had had never mentioned who his uncle was. Ever. And never talked about him again really.

The movie Convoy had just been out that summer and I had seen it. Probably the first movie I ever saw him in - although I knew who he was from music and had seen him on some TV specials or talk shows.

His mom was Kris's sister and had married someone named Kirschenbauer who was in the army. Turns out the entire family had a military service background including Kris, Kris's sister married into the army, and his father and grandfather had both served (the latter in the Swedish army before).

It was surreal how down to earth this huge star was. There was certainly no media and his family of course just treated him like Uncle Kris.

Great story, that's good stuff.

I've been around him several times, usually at functions where we'd get to speak and that's about it. But about a year ago, Fred had some health issues and had to spend some time in a rehab facility. That's my wife's gig, so we got him in her center where she's the rehab coordinator. I would go down and visit him every week, and one Sunday afternoon I popped in on him and Kristofferson was there with his wife visiting. We sat in Fred's room and talked for about 4 hours, the first and only time I've truly been able to have a real conversation with him. The interesting thing about it was, all of the nurses/techs/etc would come in to check Fred's BP, or bring water & ice, food, etc. - none of them ever paid a bit of attention to him. I think they didn't recognize him because it never crossed their mind that a guy like him would be at a rehab center in Columbia TN. I think Kris was pretty happy about that actually, I get the feeling he's not comfortable with getting the star treatment.

This thread is under consideration for a Cheap Trick effortpost, and it's outrageous - though certainly predictable given the history of this board - that Rick Nielsen has yet to be mentioned.

These two ladies have written many great songs.
They were members of a band with Andrew Gold (Golden Girls theme song artist)
and Kenny Edwards (Stone Ponies) called Bryndle.

Well worth the time of music lovers to check out, imo.
