I didn't see a thread on this here.

Apparently Disney negotiated a complex deal to manage Hulu. What does this mean for the consumer?

Should be favorable for the consumer. Netflix either has to lower price or deliver on much better content. Alternatively it's just another option. I wouldn't want to be a Netflix shareholder right now. I was at one point and am certainly happy to have been one!

Disney should replace Hulu entirely with Disney+. Move all of the Hulu original content there.

Don't think a lot of Hulu stuff would be "on brand"

My understanding is Disney+ will be their more family oriented stuff, and everything else goes to Hulu.

I think Netflix holds the cards to those properties, if I'm not mistaken.

There's an exclusivity clause, but best I can tell it's not that long (2 years?) and Disney could buy their way out of it. Not sure those shows are worth it, because save Luke Cage and Jessica Jones I thought the series were pretty weak overall.

Also not sure about the family oriented aspect of Disney+ versus Hulu, the Mandalorian is set to air on Disney+ and it doesn't look like Care Bears. Seems more like Hulu will be a more mature syndication platform and Disney+ will be a family oriented syndication platform with Disney original content.

Netflix is in trouble. Hulu has more quality property rights stakeholders than Netflix could dream of.

Netflix isn't in trouble
You're going to have to buy both Hulu and Disney+ at whatever rate they charge. And probably still pay to watch commercials

Netflix is about to lose A LOT of it's syndicated shows like The Office (it's most watched show) in the not super distant future. Something like 40% of the minutes watched on Netflix is potentially going to disappear to other streaming platforms. They may not be in danger to their ability to operate trouble, but they're definitely going to become a secondary or tertiary or worse player in the streaming market, because Disney is likely going to be on top with their exclusive big budget content and shows.

Disney can absolutely price compete with Netflix and because they own Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu+ and Hulu Live TV they're going to have a lot of opportunity to be the dominant player.

You can argue that Netflix is putting out a lot of original content, but most of what they put out is just not very good compared to the other property rights holders and far less profitable without advertising boosting its revenues. As supported Netflix like ad supported Hulu isn't an impossibility.
