At this point, it seems like The Last Jedi and GoT Season 8 are atop that list.

You're either on one side, or the other.

I might throw Matrix Reloaded in there, too. Some love it, many hate it.

I personally love the movie. (Though obviously not as much as the first movie.)

Avatar.

2.7 billion worldwide and yet so many people (myself included) absolutely loathe the movie.

For television, I'll throw in Big Bang Theory. One of the worst "comedy" shows of all time yet it was #1 in the ratings for a decade.

Eyes wide shut and passion of the Christ come to mind.

Avatar was the first I thought of. Titanic is another one. Others off the top of my head: Gravity, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Hurt Locker, Prometheus, Crash, Vanilla Sky, and Magnolia

I think you're right but I don't view myself or my opinion that way. When it's all said and done, it's just entertainment. I am enjoying GoT S8 but at the same time I think folks have some valid criticisms. I am not a fan of the Last Jedi but I recognize it's not complete garbage either.

What I find irritating is the huge overreactions that sometimes spiral down to the level of grown ups having temper tantrums because an entertainment product isn't meeting their expectations.

Citizen Kane and 2001 are others that people seem to either love or think is unwatchable. I can't remember, but I think A.I. was pretty divisive. Clockwork Orange maybe? Outside of Pulp Fiction, Tarantino seems pretty divisive.

Avatar is the same for me. While I have actually never watched it all the way through in one sitting, on one hand it's a really fun movie to watch. The battle sequences are amazing. IMO. At the same time it's simply impossible for me not to roll my eyes. The messaging is so over done.

Seems like The Phantom Menace would belong on this list.

I think both of those first two movies suffer from their own success. For their times, they were groundbreaking - but watched after a thousand movies took those batons and raced forward, they don't seem nearly as amazing - especially if the person watching isn't putting it into perspective for the time it was made. A lot of older movies suffer from that.

I think 2001 is one of the best movies ever made.

Is The Dark Knight Rises divisive? Are there other people like me who were seriously disappointed in that final film?

After the brilliance of The Dark Knight, I found the final Nolan Batman film to be laughably bad.

I think most people seemed to think it was good, but not near the greatness of Dark Knight. I don't remember many flat out not liking it.

I think the only people who could possibly like The Hurt Locker are those who have never been in the military or who don't know anyone in the military.

I have honestly never met a single person who liked that movie. I think it's literally just critics who like it.

I think I would lump Last Jedi and Got "decisiveness" into another category compared to Avatar and Big Bang.

Most people always either loved or hated Avatar and Big Bang ( and most other movies listed here)

But Got and Star Wars would be more people who originally loved it and then despise a certain season or movie in the franchise and that is more real hate.

Those that don't like Big Bang or Avatar as a whole just need to forget about them.

Do people really dislike interstellar? I know people that thought it was overrated but I don't recall people that actually saw it that thought it was bad.

I remember The Last Temptation of Christ being highly divisive.

Movies are now becoming more divisive as the American audience becomes more polarized. What Hollywood used to be able to do with little self control (self moralize) now seems to generate a reaction.

Most controversial films nowadays are caught up in this political polarization....TLJ, hurt locker, avatar all have subtle or not-so-subtle political viewpoints. GOT and a few others like Interstellar, Dunkirk don't really have this issue but are still somewhat divisive because of people's preferences for their art/entertainment.

I liked it until the final third of the movie, which I hated. Overall, I think its Nolan's worst movie and probably the only one he's made that I have no desire to ever watch again.

I don't know anyone that hated passion. Passion was just boring lazy film making.

Agree on eyes wide shut and bbt. That thread about the finale lets me know who I should add to an ignore list

I remember the Passion of the Christ causing some arguments. I was in West Texas at the time and the source material made some feel like they HAD to love it.
Duncan Idaho

Yeah. The people that loved passion, loved it because of their religious ties to it and felt that anyone that criticized the movie was criticizing their faith.

With most of these other movies there are strong feeling on both sides (eyes wide shut, bbt) or really negative feeling on the negative side (avatar, last jedi). Passion was unique, there was really really strong feelings on the positive side, little on the "worst movie every" and most in the "meh" and "that was bad story telling" range.

I have a neighbor who was a Marine who just recently said he likes it, still not sure if he was serious.

*Another neighbor was wearing a HurtLocker (the Band) t-shirt and neighbor says"Great Movie", but was then told this was the the Metal Band and his best friend was in the Band and received royalties for the name of the movie.

I liked Hurt Locker and Crash, though I've only seen them both once and don't remember much about either. I thought both were in the "pretty good, but don't care to watch it again" category.

Does anyone like Natural Born Killers, or is it divisive?

Personally, I've never been so repelled by a movie.

ETA - another vote from a veteran: The Hurt Locker sucked.

Same here. But I can get where people in the military would absolutely hate hurt locker.

Avatar was a beautiful movie and has some cool stuff, but yeah the story is a little heavy handed

Went with a group of about 6 people to see NBK.

About 15 minutes into it, we were all looking at each other like "you wanna go?" No one took the initiative and we all stayed. Everyone of us absolutely hated the movie and wondered why we didn't leave.

One of my high school buddies is an EOD Tech and he couldn't watch it because of how wrong they got everything.

Regarding Avatar, I don't think it's a good movie, but I've still never seen anything like what it achieved with 3D since. It was amazing to see in theater.
