I'm jumping in and ready to binge watch GoT.

Is HBO Go, HBO now or simply an HBO package on my cable the best option.

I currently don't carry any "movie" channels....only sports and basic home remodel and Disney Chanel's.

HBO Go is only for if you are a cable subscriber, so that would come with your HBO cable package.

HBO Now is $15/month. So just figure out which one is cheaper and that's your best bet, imo. Pretty much identical apps.

I can get HBO on my cable package for $8 more per month.

If I do this, will I then be able to get HBO Go for free since it comes with my cable package now and then watch all seasons of GOT?

yes and it's the best way to watch all their programs. I've found that when you stream it off the app, you get a better picture.

Exactly. I subscribe to HBO via DIRECTV, but have started watching all HBO shows exclusively through the Go app because the quality is so much better.

Not a fan of "coming up next: <film>" popups on your screen?

Unlimited ATT user? You get free HBO through DIRECTV now which you can use to login to HBO GO

But the cheapest DTV Now sub is $50 per month even with free HBO and the $15/month promotion brings it to $35/month for the first 2 months.

Since he has cable the $8/month to add HBO is the way to go.

The $50/month might be cheaper than his cable - but he didn't indicate he wanted to "cut the cord" too. But that is an option. FWIW though.... I hate DTV Now and likely will cancel it soon and go with Hulu+Live TV.

What don't you like about DTV Now? I was just thinking about switching from DTV satellite to that, though I know next to nothing about it...

Well I've done trials of some other services. And generally have to say I like them all better.

But I still get DTV Now sort of grandfathered on the first adopter deal. It used to be $35 for what was at the time called the Go Big package - and I also got a lifetime $25/month credit for the ATT Unlimited wireless plan (they later reduced that offer to $15 credit I think) .

So it was effectively $35-$25 = $10/month and then free HBO too. But..... they've slowly been creeping that price up. I'm not sure how they justify it since I was guaranteed a lifetime deal but they bumped it by $5 three times. My net effective rate is now $50-$25 = $25 per month and free HBO. But if I ever cancel or switch I cannot get that back since the Go Big is not offered any more. That's the only reason I have not cancelled. It's still much cheaper than anything else.

But I've had many many issues with the service.

1. So locals sometimes work and sometimes don't. Primarily IF you IP address ever gives a ZIP code associated with it that does not match your billing zip code then your locals don't work on SOME interfaces (mostly web pages) but do still work on iPad and iPhone. weird. My zip was different than my IP address zip even though it was in the same metro region (Dallas) and literally the next zip to mine it would stop working. I tried messing with my billing zip to get them to match, etc.... did not work at all or a long time. It seems to be working now.

2. Sometimes it just won't load at all on some browsers, other times it does. Well the page loads and it shows the guide - but it just spins forever when you select a channel. Safari always seems to work. But Chrome and Firefox are dicey at times. I hate Safari but end up having to use it to watch a lot.

3. I hate the guide and it is not customizable at all - others let you customize the channel order and add or subtract them at will. DTV Now only has a favorite system, but you can't reorder them and it is just alphabetical listing so you cannot logically group channels.

4. the cloud DVR leaves a lot to be desired. Sure it is free but 20 hours and only keeps anything for 30 days - and no other options to upgrade that.

5. the guide is not accessible at all on browsers in fullscreen mode or even just maximized in the window - you have to exit fullscreen/maximized and pull up the guide. And the min pop up window then just seems to lag and freeze a lot while perusing the guide.

6. It's slow to load and play.

7. Default is for audio to be OFF/MUTED every time you start it up. the option menu has a setting for that but cannot change it.

MANY of these are issues with the browser interface - the APP is a lot better i think. And even on Apple TV the App is much better.

I watch on browser a lot in my office on second monitor.

This is all super helpful, thanks. Numbers 3 and 4, especially, are big ones for me. I definitely want a customizable guide and a seamless DVR with tons of space.

I wasn't saying for him to sign up for Direct TV now...

I was making the statement that through the AT&T unlimited data plan (if that is what OP has), you get HBO through a free direct tv now account, which then you can use to sign into HBO Go.

Also, Hulu + live is the best thing out there. I have it as Well. I only use the directv account for HBO

Interesting - I actually did not know that THANKS!!!!!

So apparently yes if you have AT&T Unlimited but don't have any AT&T video service (Uverse or DirecTV or DirecTV Now) you still get HBO free through the DirecTV Now or HBO Go Apps with an DTV Now account (I assume I would keep my same one?).

https://forums.att.com/t5/Account-Features/HBO-For-Life-amp-AT-amp-T-Unlimited-Plus-How-To-Redeem-The-Offer/td-p/5247767

That's cool - cuz one of the reasons I've kept DTV Now is the free HBO with my AT&T Unlimited. Been intending to switch to Hulu+Live TV and figured I would then have to pay for HBO also on Hulu or through HBO Now.

That makes Hulu even more enticing cuz I'm already paying $11.99 for Hulu online content without commercials and it's just $50.99 for Hulu+Live TV with no commercials on the streaming. And I would still have HBO via my AT&T Unlimited. So that's a difference of $38 and I pay $25 for the crappy DTV Now with Free HBO.

That's worth $13 difference for me. Was waiting until GOT was done to make the switch guess I'm good to go now.

Hulu+Live TV has better interface, better guide, works on all my browsers, no zip code issues, better cloud DVR, etc.

Wow...Texags knows everything!

Went ahead and paid the additional $8 per month to get HBO (I live in KC and have Spectrum..formerly Time Warner). Watched first two episodes of GoT and I think we are hooked!

I have Verizon (also a work phone), but my wife has AT&T. She's not sure if she has Unlimited....she only has unlimited talk/text, not data. She's going to check into it tomorrow.

Hey just found out another thing FREE with AT&T Unlimited.

Besides free HBO thru HBO go or DTV Now - even without a TV package.

You also get Free AT&T Watch - it's their smaller independent streaming TV package all cable channels no locals and no sports but 35 channels. And here is the best part. It picks up a lot of the channels that Hulu+Live TV does not have.

AMC - this is a big one for BCS fans (and all those walking dead shows) that is not on Hulu
BBC-A
Food
Hallmark
Lifetime Movies
TV Land
MTV and VH1

My wife does not have AT&T Unlimited, but did get an additional $20 by going to auto pay...not sure why it wasn't set up this way.

The move to Unlimited would be more than the $8 Spectrum would charge us for HBO, so we are going to stay with that.

Great conversation on this thread...thanks!

Make sure to check out Arli$$ after GoT. It is universally considered HBOs only other good show.

Sopranos
The Wire
Deadwood
Westworld
Boardwalk Empire
Veep
Silicon Valley

I'd put all of those WAAAAYYY above Arli$$

Do you ever find that the humor goes over your head on those HBO shows you claim are better than Arli$$? I think that is why none of the shows you listed were critical successes in the way GoT and Arli$$ were.

LMAO.

You are claiming Sopranos and The Wire and Deadwood and Westworld were not critical successes?

Arli$$ doesn't even show up on ANY of these top HBO show lists.

NONE

You have to be trolling.

PS - you might notice all of the ones I mentioned usually in the top 10 or on the list at least.

I'm glad you saw multiple posts claiming that Arli$$ and GoT are the only good shows HBO has ever aired and then felt the need to go do some internet research to help build your claim that HBO has actually had many good shows.

Of course you're the same guy who just responded to a post claiming that Austin was the largest US metro without a major pro sports team by "well actually"ing that Austin has a minor league baseball team and minor league hockey team.
Stay golden.

Incorrect. the quote (below) does NOT say MAJOR pro sports... it says A pro sports.

Try again.

And it took virtually no work at all to find 30-67 better HBO shows than Arli$$. the first dozen hits were enough.
