I have had a hard on for an original Ford GT since before I even noticed girls.

Watching Nolan driving one, watching that dream go by by.

I love racing movies. This looks like it could be my favorite one of all time. Christian Bale as Ken Miles? Hell yes.

Seeing multiple "instant classic" reactions from the festivals. People are LOVING this movie, and I could not be more excited. It's looking to be a great fall all around.

Saw this preview before the Lion King a couple of weeks ago. I have zero interest in car racing, but really want to see that cast in action.

I've been a car dork since forever, so I'm interested to see this, lots of angles to work with.

Shelby, by many accounts, was a borderline huckster, but his heart was definitely in it. Speaking of which, he was apparently the longest lived heart transplant recipient at one point, not sure if that has been surpassed. He died after contracting an illness, allegedly from Linda Vaughn, whom he couldn't resist spending some time with at an event despite her warning him that she wasn't feeling well.

Vaughn, in her younger days:

I will say that Gimme Shelter probably needs to be retired from use in movie trailers.
it is not fair to the movie, but I stopped watching the trailer when the song came on. It's quickly turning into "don't stop believing"

Car movies almost always suck. I am very hopeful for this one though.
If they cgi anything or have lame drivers doing stunts i will vomit.

I don't know how many of y'all are actual fans of endurance racing but for those who follow the sport this film will be huge.

I've been to Le Mans twice, in 2016 and again this year, to support Risi Competizione out of Houston. I hate Ford but will watch the **** outta this movie none the less.

We haven't had a Le Mans movie since 1971 so who cares how accurate it is (it looks incredibly inaccurate)? Besides, anyone knows the Ferrari 330 P3 was the superior car and sells for $2 million more than the original Ford GT Mk II.

Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.

I hope you are not insinuating that certain truths have been stretched in the interest of making a more entertaining motion picture.

Meh, I don't care about playing around with facts in cinema. It's basically slapping fake tits on reality to make the movie more engaging.

I got to see this last week in a sneak preview. My thoughts hidden below:

Overall it was an ok movie. Great acting as can be expected. Bale kills it, though if there was any movie where he was just playing himself, this might be it. Damon was doing his best Tommy Lee Jones impression, and I actually bought it.

The story itself was predictable (I didn't know it in advance), but that doesn't really bother me too much normally. The cars were great, sexy, and the cinematography of the racing was very well executed. Having not really known much of the history, but having an engineering background, I wish there was more context and explanation throughout. They would setup a challenge ("oh no, how will we solve this in only so many days") to only have some part or car just show up that had already solved that problem. Maybe this had to do with the location I saw this sneak preview at having bad audio that made some of the dialogue hard to understand, but there was a lack of clarity of what the path was to the final Le Mans race. It's like they established the stakes, but then the film would chop those stakes at the legs - just felt odd.

Specifically first the arrival of the GT40 felt like it came from no where, and only undermined their bringing on Shelby to design and build them a winning race car. This was only made worse by determining they needed a bigger engine, showing us that there already was one designed by/for Ford, then saying "how will we fit that in the GT40" which was then immediately followed by "ohh we already did that"... like why the f did you walk me through that bit? Maybe some historical narrative this was trying to abbreviate, but it just clanged for me and only undercut their single biggest challenge: the car itself."

I've kind of been hesitant about sharing this story on here because I don't want to sound like a big timer but I figure it speaks to Mr Shelbys character so what the hell.

I grew up in McKinney and would often find myself out on the golf course by myself after school. One day I was on the first tee about to go off and an old man came up and asked if I minded if he joined. I said of course not and he introduced himself and we played and casually conversed for a couple of holes. As we made the turn we got to talking and he asked me if I was a "car guy" and I said, "not really". I drove a Jeep and we talked about those for awhile. It then kind of dawned on me who I was with and why he asked. Not being into cars didn't take away from the fact that I was with arguably one of the most important names in automotive history, but I was 17 and full of piss and vinegar so I didn't really freak out too much. He told me that if I ever wanted to I could call him to come check out his Private collection and I never did.

One of the biggest regrets of my life.

Mr Shelby and I carried on a casual friendship and played together several more times until I came to A&M and eventually lost touch.

I never had any business dealings with the guy so I can't sAy much about him being a huckster, but he was always a really nice guy and I was happy to call him a casual friend.

If you want an accurate representation of the facts, The Grand Tour did a very good job. Season 1 episode 6.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I went and saw it tonight. I laughed quite a bit more than I expected. I have some critiques but overall I liked it.

I agree with poster above about they set up an engineering challenge then the next line was "we solved it". No hard work, failure, trial and error, shots of the team grinding away in the shop. Could have been a good source of tension and small wins toward the big race. Unfortunately all that Tension came from Ford execs, Shelby and Ken. Not perfect but feel good movie.

In agreement that it's a lot fun, and that Damon/Bale are fantastic, but I was the slightest bit underwhelmed overall. The pacing/ebb & flow felt off at times (as mentioned above), and it got mildly repetitive as well. It's one of those true stories that feels like it was 85% of a movie in real life, that they had to both stretch and condense a bit, and then hit the same beats a couple of times, to really get it to work, give it the proper stakes, etc. I loved the methodical, workmanship quality of it, but there were a couple of times where I was like, "We're hitting this beat again?" Especially after it felt like we had moved past that particular obstacle for good.

That said, they find some really great ways to show us things we haven't seen before in a racing movie, both technically and in the racing scenarios themselves. It definitely felt fresh in that regard. And the last 40 minutes or so is incredibly solid. If you don't know the story, which I didn't, there are some really poignant surprises I wasn't expecting, which further sets it apart from similar movies. That, and this is how movies should look. It's just so expertly and gorgeously shot, and feels "classic" in the best possible way. Very sleek and Americana and I wish more movies looked this good.

Anyway, despite my very mild complaints, I would absolutely see this in the theater, as it's the perfect movie to see with the family over Thanksgiving, if not over the next week or so. Definitely worth checking out.

I enjoyed the movie, especially the first startup of the 427.

One thing to keep in mind is Shelby didn't develop and build the Mk I version of the GT40. It was built by Ford in Europe for the 1964 racing season. The car was based on a Lola from 1963. After a year of issues with aerodynamic instability and brake failures, they brought in Shelby to help out. The scene of the GT40 arriving at Shelby American was a Mk I sent directly after the last race of 1964.

That is why the movie mainly focuses on aero and brake issues, and not developing a whole racecar.

That's good to know, but they needed to do a better job of getting that across. It felt like Ford says, "We're gonna beat Ferrari," then Lee Iacocca shows up at Shelby's place to recruit him, then all the sudden there's a fully built car at Shelby's new hangar. Just a single line of dialogue or some little tell that Ford had already started work on a racer between Ford saying they were going to beat Ferrari, and Iacocca recruiting Shelby, would have done wonders (and maybe there was and I just missed it). But there were three or four instances like that throughout the movie where'd they'd just skip ahead without any context and it was kind of disorienting. It never ruined it for me by any means, but some of it seemingly could have been handled better, IMO.

Totally agree. And didn't they even introduce us to Iaccoca in a scene where he was ****ting on Ford for not having sexy cars or participating in racing, and using that as a setup for him to first try to buy Ferrari, and then for recruiting Shelby?

That just felt very undercut by the introduction of the GT40 (and also of the large engine almost immediately following).

Did a year pass from Ken Miles not making the trip to Europe and then the Le Mans race? I was a little confused if that race he wasn't invited to (or univited from) was Le Mans and then the film followed the team for a year, or if that was some tune-up race in that same season. Weird pacing either way.

Saw this last night and sat in the "D-Box" seats - they shake, pitch, and roll with the action. I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't nominate it for any Oscars, but it was an enjoyable flick. Bale was awesome. Lots of good car porn, though there could have been more. Had some good laughs too.
