My all-time favorite is LA Confidential. But, any recommendations you have are appreciated.

It doesn't get more noir-er than pitch black.

Maltese Falcon gets my vote. But LA Confidential is also in my top-10.

Brick and Chinatown are excellent.

"The Big Sleep" wins for me, but "Out of the Past" is pretty close.

I like the Maltese Falcon because I like Bogart, but I would also recommend Double Indemnity.

Pretty much sums it up. If I had to pick one, it'd be Double Indemnity. What an absolute classic.

Watch DePalma documentary on Netflix for an overview of the best. And I mostly agree with him.

Probably my favorite genre

Third Man is the best. Double Indemnity is second.

Maltest Falcon and Big Sleep are way up there.

Can anyone concisely define what makes a movie a noir movie?

I've read the wiki page multiple times but never walk away with a clearer way of explaining it.

It's hard to define, but you know it when you see it.

I own it and I've gotten part way through it, but I got distracted and never finished. Maybe I should go back to it...

Does Fury Road count as noir? Cause that was an outstanding movie.

Also, I second Chinatown.

I'm not sure if I understand it completely but a consistent theme I've seen across these movies listed (that I've watched) is the more or less "who done it" mixed with a somewhat troubled protagonist. Like, mystery/suspense. With that said, would Shutter Island be considered noir?
