On the night of Nov 12, 1955 (at the end of BttF 2), for a few hours, there are actually 4 DeLoreans.

Four DeLoreans

In Timeline 7 and Timeline 8, there are four DeLoreans in 1955, this is the history of both Alt-1885 timelines, and neither are depicted on film.
In this timeline, there are temporarily two Biffs, two Martys, and three Docs (one long dead).
  • Marty A and 35-year-old Doc are present with DeLorean A.
  • 78-year-old-Biff is present with flying DeLorean B.
  • 78-year-old Biff gives the Grays Sports Almanac to 18-year-old Biff.
  • Marty B and 65-year-old Doc are present with flying DeLorean C and a hoverboard.
  • DeLorean D is buried in the Delgado Mine, and has been for seventy years.
  • Doc's letter has been in the office of Western Union for seventy years.
  • Timeline 7 only: 65 year old Doc is buried in the Boot Hill Cemetery outside the Delgado Mine, and has been for seventy years.

In the period of Timeline 7 depicted on film at the end of Part II and start of Part III, after Doc is struck by lightning, there is only one DeLorean left:
  • DeLorean A has departed with Marty A to 1985. 35-year-old Doc stays.
  • DeLorean B has departed with 78-year-old Biff to 2015. 18-year-old Biff stays.
  • DeLorean C has departed with 65-year-old Doc to 1885. Marty B stays.
  • DeLorean D is buried in the Delgado Mine, and has been for seventy years.
  • 65-year-old Doc is buried in the Boot Hill Cemetery outside the Delgado Mine, and has been for seventy years.
  • Marty B is present with the hoverboard and Doc's letter, and makes contact with 35-year-old Doc.

I really have to give it up to Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. Still intrigued by this franchise 30+ years later.

Interesting thing I'd never thought aobut --

When Doc is struck by lightning and sent back to 1885, does the new timeline instantly "refresh" around Marty? (ie. the buried DeLorean appears, the history books are changed, etc.), or does Marty himself suddenly appear in a new timeline?

Either way, if you think about it, Marty should have disappeared at that point, because in this new timeline, Doc (from 1955) never makes it to 1985 and thus Marty never goes back in time.

It basically creates the situation they were trying to avoid in BttF 1. (Marty doesn't get erased, but future Doc does, hence THIS version of Marty gets erased.)

Actually, I change my mind on this. They kind of cheated with this already in 1 anyway, because the new version of Marty created in 1 (rich Marty) still gets replaced by the original Marty, which doesn't make any sense.

It's almost like rich Marty ceased to exist at some point?

That's... kind of scary. And also doesn't make a lot of sense. At which point did rich Marty become original Marty?

Rich Marty goes back in time -> Let's assume he does everything original Marty does -> Goes back to 1985

Where does he go? Does he rejoin original Marty in the same body? Or is it parallel timelines now, with 2 Martys?

it's the dark side of the story that they didn't show us where original Marty had to murder rich Marty and take over his life, sort of like the Talented Mr Ripley.

How do you figure? 1985 Doc going to 1885 has no effect on 1955 Doc going on and inventing the time machine in 30 years to set everything in motion

1955 Doc was the one that was sent to 1885.

So happy to see this thread. BTTF came up at trivia night last week and it sent me on a BTTF knowledge find.

Just last night I learned the story of how the studio exec wanted to call the movie "Space Man from Pluto" and Spielberg fended him off by thanking him for the "joke memo" and saying everyone at the office got a kick out of it

If you didn't have the theme song enter your mind while reading this post, you are doing it wrong.

Random Trivia:

Michael J. Fox plays a guitar that didn't exist in 1955: a cherry red Gibson ES-345 TDC with Bigsby, a model only made available in 1959.

Over the last month, we've watched the trilogy with my kids (boy - 6 & girl - 10). There are very few movies from my childhood they have enjoyed, but BTTF is one of them, along with the Star Wars trilogy and the Indiana Jones trilogy.

What gets me thinking is this...

If you have this generating 1.21 Gigawatts on the back of your car, what's the point of having an internal Combustion Engine? Switch to a battery driven engine and you'd never have BttF 2 or 3.

In BTTF 3, shouldn't there have been some gas and an extra fuel line in the Delorean that Doc arrived in that could fix the one Marty arrived in?

I assumed (or maybe Doc actually said this) that he drained the fluids when he put it in storage.

My All-Time favorite movie. I will watch it a few times a year. The original.

Start to finish it's the best!
