My memory sucks, but there was one on Netflix that I watched just because the wife was out of town, and it was so good I had to have her watch it with me after she got home. She really liked it, too. Normally I watch Sci-Fi or horror stuff when it's just me. Hopefully this will stay near the top and spur my memory.

Quite a few listed in here that would be on my list too. O Brother Where Art There, for sure. (And Raising Arizona, to add another Coen film...)

The one I think (hope) will resonate with a lot of folks here is Galaxy Quest. It was way better than I expected from "a movie with Tim Allen spoofing James T. Kirk," which is how I understood it.

With the disclaimer that I haven't watched Glass, I was pleasantly surprised by Shyamalan's Split. McAvoy was freaking awesome in that movie.

A Dog's Journey recently. Corny, but good. Saw it with my 7 yo little girl, who cried her eyes out (first time she had ever cried from a movie), thus triggering dad geysers that were extremely difficult to hide.

Lots of recency bias in theses lists so I'll go older on mine.

12 Monkeys looked dumb and cheesy when I saw the previews, then I watched it and was blown away by the complexity of the plot.

Also, having only watched slow paced 1960s mission impossible episodes the original movie was way better than I was expecting and launched a franchise which other than a limp bizkit/John woo abortion of a movie has continued to exceed expectations.

And I agree on Edge of Tomorrow, everytime we have friends over that want to watch a movie I ask if they've seen it yet so I can watch it again.

(Except Tom Cruise should have died at the end)

Secret Life of Walter Mitty - underrated. Really like the movie and the soundtrack is great.

After reading this post I watched 2/3 of this movie last night on Netflix before getting tired and going to sleep. Tried to watch the rest of this today only to find out that Netflix had pulled it! Damnit!!

I read the plot synopsis to find out what happened. Based on the part that I did see it was a meh for me. Doesn't help that I can't stand Kristen Wiig.

Just finished on FXM. Great movie

I just watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Very well done little movie. After what Taika Waititi did with Ragnarok, I am becoming a big fan of his work. The previews for Jojo Rabbit look hilarious as well.

Game Night. Perfect little "let's see what's on HBO Go on a lazy Saturday" kind of film.

Fairly recent one for me would be Arrival. Looked good, but it was way better than I thought it'd be.

Green Book.

Just not something that would interest me. Had a flight to San Fran back in June and got bored and started watching well in to the flight. Had to turn it off halfway through. I literally couldn't wait to get on my return flight to finish it. Masterpiece, IMO.

Came here to post and I see my answer 2 posts above.

Green Book.

Wife heard good things so we rented, I agreed but was very meh on the idea. I absolutely loved it. I laughed so much, but was also moved by it. Just a great movie that I didn't expect. I liked it more than she did.

it was the kind of movie that made me drop my cynicism and just roll with it. And I truly hate the term "it really makes you think" but if Green Book doesn't "really make you think" then you have issues.

Not a huge Tom cruise fan so I didn't see it at first but definitely a great movie.

Rogue One. Went in expecting to be disappointing (as a result of TFA).

The first Bourne movie. That was a hell of ride first time seeing it.

I couldn't believe they picked Matt Damon originally. But he did it. He made a very believable badass. Far exceeded my expectations.

Ant Man ~ took my son and one of his friends to a 10pm viewing just because everyone else in the house was asleep. We all freaking loved it, I had really thought it was just going to be garbage.

I watched "The Predator" (2018) recently, and thought it was absolutely hilarious. Read other peoples reviews after and apparently it was pretty much universally hated. Probably helps that I haven't watched any of the originals, and had basically zero expectations.

Another vote for Green Book. Was expecting super tame, safe, everyone learns to respect each other. Viggo's character was fantastic and the dynamic he built with Ali was outstanding. Was super surprised to find that one of the Farrelly brothers directed it.

Another one for me more recently was Solo. Not because it was that great, but because my expectations were that low going in, and I found it to be pretty enjoyable for what it was.

The one I couldn't remember was "About Time" from 2013. Romantic Drama/comedy that was listed as Sci-Fi because of time travel elements. Rachel McAdams and the actor that played the old vampire in Underworld were in it. Recommend.

Alita: Battle Angel.

I'm not into manga and, judging by the title and trailer, this just looked stupid.

Yeah. Watched that one twice.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Crazy Rich Asians". Maybe I was the only one with ZERO desire to see it even after it got the hype. Maybe less than zero.

In-laws had it on, so I sat down to watch it. Very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Watched it again as a date night with my wife.
