Spielberg had nothing to do with The Empire Strikes Back, although I generally agree with your overall point about the Williams/Spielberg collaborations.

I agree about many of the choices listed already. I would add one particular theme that Williams wrote for a Spielberg movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind - the da-da-da-du-da (I am not musically inclined, so this is the best I can do) used during the communication between Man and Alien.

Oh man, I was way off on that. I don't even know why I thought that. Good catch.

I have no idea how many times as a 10 or 11 year old in '78 and '79 I listened to my vinyl copy of the Star Wars songs performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Probably more than any other album....so definitely very nerdy and way uncool.

So I think the OP is asking which scores will almost any person on the street be able to easily identify the movie with and not necessarily best scores overall since that's a matter of opinion. Half of the ones listed on here so far I've never heard... So here's my list.

1) Star Wars
2) Rocky
3) Jaws
4) Indiana Jones
5) The Godfather (this is way before my time and I've never seen the movie, but I know the music anytime I hear it)
6) The 007 Movies

By the way, if you've never heard musical scores performed live you're missing out. The first time I heard the Houston Symphony perform selections from John Williams gave me chills from the opening notes of Star Wars.

Where is the love for Back to the Future? Come on people.

The opening chime when the date appears on screen is iconic alone.

I've always loved Braveheart and Glory (RIP James Horner).

Other favorites not frequently mentioned : Dragon:The Bruce Lee Story (reused in about 3000 movie trailers since its release), The Rock, Point of No Return

Since movies have been hit on:

Game of Thrones and Westworld both have really great scores.

Dragon really sounds like Edelman's work in "Gettysburg" which is also great. Other personal favorites: Conan the Barbarian, How to Train Your Dragon, ROTK, Fellowship of the Ring, Krull (score is way better than the film - which does have its own charm), Rudy, Glory, Stardust, and Gladiator.

Battlestar Galactica's (mid-2000 version) score is amazing. Something Dark is Coming is still my all-time favorite track when it comes to tv/movie music.

The composer, Bear McCreary, could be one of the next great movie/tv show composers in my opinion. Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, Black Sails, Outlander, and the newest God of War video game soundtrack are all his work.

I was about to post how I think its a crime he never won an Emmy for his work on the show but didn't realize he finally got one last year. Still way freaking overdue.

Earl i agree. This is really about "iconic" scores. Something we all would recognize.
I like all of yours would add Casa Blanca, Good,Bad,Ugly.
But for me , and I'm old. it would be "2001 a space odyssey"
